 FISHING REPORTS 2008

  JANUARY  

ONLY A FEW TRIPS DONE DUE TO THE WINDY WEATHER. HOWEVER ONE OFFSHORE WRECKING TRIP WAS DONE WITH 30 POLLACK BEING CAUGHT ON A VARIETY OF LURES. THE INSHORE FISHING PRODUCED RAYS,WHITING,CONGERS,SMOOTH HOUNDS,SPURDOGS,POUTS,DOGFISH ETC.   SPECIES COUNT STANDS AT 10 FOR 2008 AT PRESENT.  FLAMER FISH OF THE MONTH FOR JANUARY WAS AWARDED TO SAM CARLYON WITH A SUPERB WHITING WEIGHING 4Ib 8oz.  DON'T MISS OUT - BOOK YOUR TRIPS NOW FOR 2008. 

  FEBRUARY

Trips done in the weather windows produced some good catches.The inshore reef and bank marks producing rays,conger,huss,smooth hounds,etc.The Flamer Friday Fishers Species League had it's first match of the year and 14 different species were caught and Jim Whippy was match 1 winner .The offshore wrecking for pollack was superb with 40 to 60plus pollack a trip the norm. Trevor Locker wins Flamer Fish of the Month for February with a pollack weighing 17Ib 8oz.(sorry no picture).
 

  MARCH

The weather in March was awful. The first Plaice were caught on the Shambles Bank with eddy Dart landing one weighing 4Ib 2oz also the first Turbot of the year were caught. The inshore reefs produced some good congers with Jamie Watts landing two personal bests with eels weighing 45Ib and 54Ib.One wrecking trip was done with some nice pollack being landed. Species count so far is 27 for the year.Flamer Fish of the Month for March is awarded to Jamie Watts - Conger 54Ib.

APRIL

APRIL WAS A GOOD MONTH WITH LOTS OF GOOD SPECIMENS BEING CAUGHT. BIG PLAICE FROM THE MUSSEL BEDS WITH 4 TO 5 POUNDERS COMMON AND ON ONE TRIP PETE EDWARDS LANDED A 5Ib 8oz PLAICE AND ON THE NEXT DRIFT HIS MATE MARK WARREN LANDED A 6Ib PLAICE. ON THE SHAMBLES BANK  THERE WERE ALSO SOME PLAICE ALTHOUGH THESE WERE SMALLER FISH HOW EVER SOME TURBOT WERE CAUGHT WITH THE BIGGEST OF 23Ib GOING TO WARREN KNAPP.THE REEFS PRODUCED BULL HUSS,CONGERS,SMOOTH HOUNDS,COD AND RAYS. BLACK BREAM SHOWED UP ON MARKS TO THE EAST OF WEYMOUTH.THE FLAMER SPECIES COUNT SO FAR IN 2009 IS 33. FLAMER FISH OF THE MONTH FOR APRIL WAS AWARDED TO TONY BARNES WHO LANDED A SUPERB BLONDE RAY WEIGHING 33Ib.THE RAY WAS WEIGHED AND PHOTOGRAPHED AND RETURNED ALIVE.

MAY
SOME EXCELLENT OFFSHORE WRECKING TRIPS WITH PLENTY OF COD,POLLACK AND LING CAUGHT ALONG WITH SOME BASS.THE SHAMBLES BANK PRODUCED SOME GOOD TURBOT CATCHES.ON THE MANY REEFS GOOD CATCHES OF TOPE,SMOOTH HOUNDS,BULL HUSS,BLACK,BREAM,RAYS ETC WERE HAD. ON THE MUSSELL BEDS SOME SPECIMEN SIZE PLAICE WERE LANDED.MY FIRST 5 DAY WEST COUNTRY TRIP TOOK PLACE AND A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL AND SOME GOOD FISH WERE CAUGHT INCLUDING BASS,POLLACK,BULL HUSS ALONG WITH PLENTY OF PLAICE THE BEST A 4Ib 8oz PLAICE FROM THE SKERRIES BANK CAUGHT BY MALOCOLM HISCOCK. 42 DIFFERENT SPECIES CAUGHT SO FAR ON FLAMER III IN 2008. FLAMER FISH OF THE MONTH IN MAY WAS AWARDED TO KEVIN WOLLLEY WITH A 23Ib LING.
JUNE
The offshore wrecking was just brilliant for cod,pollack,and ling along with some conger action.The best Pollack  of June weighing 18Ib was landed by Alf honour. The reefs produced Tope,Rays,Conger,Bull Huss,Pollack,Black Bream etc. The mussel beds saw plenty of cod and some big plaice.The Shambles Bank was consistant for Turbot and Brill. The June 5 day West Country Trip was good and enjoyable with plenty of species being caught including cod,pollack,ling,congers,plaice and a john dory and many more. The Flamer III species count for 2008 is now up to 46. Flamer Fish of the Month for June was awarded to Eddy Leatherbarrow with a 6Ib Plaice. NOW TAKING BOOKINGS FOR 2009
JULY
JULY SAW SOME UNSEASONAL UNSETTLED AND WINDY WEATHER. THE REEFS AND MUSSEL BEDS PRODUCED SOME GOOD BLACK BREAM FISHING ALONG WITH BULL HUSS,COD,CONGERS,TOPE,RAYS ETC.THE OFFSHORE WRECKS WERE STILL GOOD FOR POLLACK AND COD.THE SHAMBLES BANK WAS CONSISTANT AS EVER FOR BRILL AND TURBOT.49 DIFFERENT SPECIES CAUGHT ON FLAMER III SO FAR IN 2009. FLAMER FISH OF THE MONTH FOR JULY WAS AWARDED TO DAVID RIGBY WITH HIS BRILL WEIGHING 8Ib 8oz. BOOK NOW FOR 2009.
AUGUST
August was very un summer like with the unsettled weather. The black bream fishing was consistant on the reefs and mussel beds.Tope,Rays,Conger,Bull Huss,cod were caught on the many reefs. Some good size Undulate rays were landed during August on a variety of marks.Turbot and Brill featured on the famous Shambles Bank. Plaice in the 3 to 4Ib range were caught on the mussel beds during the end of the month.51 different species now caught on Flamer III so far this year, two notable additions in August were a porebeagle shark and small eyed ray. Flamer Fish of the Month for August is awarded to Paul Lawson with a Black Bream weighing 3Ib 12oz.
SEPTEMBER
THE REEF AND MUSSEL BED FISHING WAS GREAT WITH PLENTY OF GOOD SIZE BLACK BREAM BEING CAUGHT ALONG WITH PLAICE,BULL HUSS,CONGERS,RAYS,COD ETC. THE KIDNEY BANK PRODUCED SOME GOOD BLONDE RAY FISHING WITH LOTS IN THE 20Ib RANGE.THE SHAMBLES BANK WAS AGAIN CONSISTANT FOR TURBOT AND BRILL.BASS AND COD FROM THE PORTLAND RACE AREA. THE WRECKS ARE PRODUCING BASS AND POLLACK.55 DIFFERENT SPECIES HAVE BEEN CAUGHT ON FLAMER III IN 2008 SO FAR.SEPTEMBER FISH OF THE MONTH WAS AWARDED TO WAYNE FRAPPLE WITH HIS 14Ib 8oz UNDULATE RAY CATCH

 FISHING REPORTS 2007

  JANUARY  

Only one trip due to the weather and Flamer III out of the water for winter re fit. 

  FEBRUARY

Again not many trips due to the bad weather. The inshore fishing on the reefs and banks was very good with plenty of Rays,Congers,Bull Huss,Whiting,Smooth Hounds etc The bad weather and dirty water put pay to the wrecking ,which was a shame because this is normaly the time for big pollack,so hopefully we will get at them in March.17 different species caught on Flamer III so far in 2007.Gary Mackenzie caught a superb specimen Undulate Ray weighing 16Ib 4oz. But Flamer Fish of the Month is awarded to  with a  weighing which is only a pound under the British Record.
 

  MARCH

The Kidney bank produced Blonde Rays. On the Reefs Conger,Bull Huss,Whiting,Smooth hounds,Spurdogs and Undulate rays were caught along with a very early Black Bream.Ballan Wrasse up to 4Ib 8oz around Portland Bill. Turbot and Plaice on the Shambles Bank, a 13Ib Turbot going to Gary Humber and the best Plaice in March weighed 4Ib 14oz and was caught by Barry Attfield. 
 Species count now stands at 25.  March Flamer Fish of the Month a 15Ib Bull Huss caught by Eddy Dart.

APRIL

April was a superb month for the flatties with lots of good size Plaice and Turbot being caught.The reefs produced Rays,Bull Huss,Smooth Hound,Congers,Bream etc The Flamer 2008 species count now stands at 35 different species. The  April Flamer Fish of the Month had lots of entries including an 18Ib Blonde Ray several  Plaice up to 5Ib 8oz and a Turbot weighing 24Ib 8oz. But even these entries were eclipsed by the 28Ib Turbot caught by Kim Mace while drifting the famous Shambles Bank and is named April's winner.

MAY
The weather was certainly unsettled for most of the month. However a wonderful week with glorious sunshine was had on my first 5 day West Country Trip of the year. 24 different species were caught ,Tope, Spurdog, Smooth hound, Conger, Bull Huss, Gurnards, Whiting, Garfish, Pollack etc along with plenty of Plaice. The offshore wrecking produced Bass, Pollack, Cod and Ling. The reefs were good for Tope, Bull Huss, Congers and Bream. A session on the Kidney bank produced 8 Blonde rays including  15Ib,18Ib,22Ib and 24Ib rays. Plaice were still being caught on the mussel beds and Turbot on the Shambles bank.  Species Count is 40 so far in 2007.  Flamer Fish of the Month for May was awarded to Leo Toms who caught a 50Ib Tope. The Tope was returned alive.
JUNE
June threw up some very un seasonal weather but despite this some good fish were caught when the weather allowed. The reefs produced some good catches of black bream,tope,bull huss,congers,cod and undulate and thornback rays. Mark Sargeant caught an amazing ray double landing a 15Ib female Undulate ray and then five minutes later landed a 15Ib 8oz male Undulate ray.James Mccarthy landed a 13Ib Thornback ray.The Kidney bank was consistant for 20Ib plus blonde rays,like the 22 pounder Aiofe Dillon caught on her first boat fishing trip. The Shambles Bank produced a few Turbot and Brill. Plaice were caught on the mussel beds in particular on one trip that produced 14 in total with nearly all the plaice weighing over 4Ib and the best one of 5Ib 4oz caught by John Hayes.The offshore wrecks were good for pollack,cod,bass and a few ling.The Flamer 2007 species count is now 45. June Flamer Fish of the Month was awarded to Paul Lawson for his personal best 9Ib Bass catch. 
JULY
Again very unseasonal weather forced plenty of cancellations of trips but when we did get out the fishing was very good.Good fishing on the reefs for Black Bream,Bull Huss,Congers,Tope,Rays and the occassional Cod.This year has been prolific for the amount of Undulate rays caught on a variety of marks. The offshore wrecks produced Pollack,Ling,Cod and Bass. A steady run of Brill and Turbot on the famous Shambles Bank. The Plaice fishing on the mussel beds just keeps on going with plenty being caught and up to 5Ib plus,perhaps the way the weather is the Plaice still think it's Spring. The 2007 Flamer species now stands at 50 , including a Connemarra Sucker a first for/on Flamer.
AUGUST
Plenty of Black Bream in the 2 to 4Ib range along with two 5 pounders being caught, the bream were caught on the reefs ,wrecks and mussel beds. Bull Huss,Congers,Rays,Tope from marks to the west and east of the port. On the small tides,anchoring wrecks produced plenty of conger action along with ling and the occassinal cod.Bass from the Portland race area,although the best Bass weighing 11Ib came from a reef and was caught by Robin Amor.Turbot and Brill on the Shambles Bank. Plaice were still being caught on the mussel beds with quie a few 4 to 5 pound fish. Undulate rays have been prolific this year and in August there quite a few 15 pounders caught along with a 16Ib one caught by Ted Scorer. Flamer Fish of the Month for August is awarded to David Trevarthen for his 5Ib 14oz plaice.
SEPTEMBER
September was a good month with plenty being caught. Plaice and Black Bream on the mussel beds. Some good Conger and Ling fishing on sessions at anchor on wrecks. The reefs were good for Conger, Bull huss , Bream and undulate Rays. Turbot and brill from the shambles bank. Bass from the portland race area. The european championships were fished and a good time was had by all with some excellent fishing taking place. The N.F.S.A. wessex champion of champions competition was also fished,with Flamer III winning the top boat prize. The kidney bank was good for Blonde Rays. September flamer fish of the month is awarded to Peter Bradley for his 23Ib Blonde Ray. The flamer 2007 species count now stands at 54 which includes a rare coalfish which we hardly ever see these days.
OCTOBER
Plaice were still being caught on the mussel beds. Plenty of Black Bream with the biggest weighging 4Ib 12oz, and Bass from the portland race area.. Pollack up to 15Ib and Bass up to 9Ib on some of the wrecks. Turbot and Brill from the Shambles Bank. Huss,Conger,Bream,Cod on the many reefs. Lots of different species including one trip were 8 red band fish were caught during a species comp. Species count for 2007 now 58. Good ray fishing from the Kidney Bank including a 19Ib 8oz Undulate Ray caught by Garry Doyley which is Flamer Fish of the Month for October. NOTE - BOOK NOW FOR 2008
NOVEMBER
During November the fishing was good when the weather allowed. Black bream were still being caught through to the middle of the month. The Kidney bank produced some good blonde rays with the biggest weighing 27Ib 5oz.The whiting began to show in numbers towards the end of November.The reefs produced Conger, Cod, and Bull Huss.Wayne Frapple landing a 14Ib Bull Huss.A few Turbot and Brill from the Shambles Bsnk. Still plenty of different species being caught. The Flamer count for 2007 now stands at 60. An offshore wreck trip produced Pollack and Bass. Two big Pollack were caught a 17Ib 8oz and a 18Ib 8oz. Flamer Fish of the Month for November is awarded to John Crotty with his 18Ib 8oz Pollack. BOOK NOW FOR 2008.

 FISHING REPORTS 2006

  JANUARY  

Only a few trips done, The reefs and banks saw some very good Whiting fishing, Lots of Bull Huss ,Congers. Also some good size Blonde Rays up to 20Ib. The Pollack fishing on the offshore wrecks gained momentum with most fish in the 10 to 15Ib range. However a personal best Pollack of 18Ib was caught by Martyn Giles and wins Flamer Fish of The Month for January 2006.

  FEBRUARY

The Reef/Bank fishing was good for Blonde rays up to 20Ib, along with some early season Spotted and Small eyed rays.Congers,Smoothound and Bull Huss featured, also had  Turbot and Brill on the Shambles Bank. It won't be long before the Spring Plaice show up. The offshore wrecking was cosistant for Pollack mainly in the 12 to 15Ib range. Personal bests for Claire Munro and Steve Parker with Pollack of 15Ib.  The best Pollack however was caught by Robin Amor which weighed 18Ib 2oz, a personal best for Robin and is FLAMER FISH of the MONTH for February.

  MARCH

The weather was awful with only two trips done which were both in shore on reef/bank trip. Caught a variety of fish though, including a 13lb Ling from reef. The first Plaice of the season on mussel beds with best one weighing 4lb caught by Richard Swain. Blonde Rays were also a feature with Billy Short catching two in a 20 minute spell.  Flamer fish of the month is awarded to Billy Short - Blonde Ray - 24lb.

APRIL

The offshore wreck fishing was good for Pollack and a few  Cod. The reefs produced plenty of Bull Huss and some Congers. The Blonde and Undulate Ray fishing was ok at the later end of the month. Adrian Kruger had a 19Ib Cod and a 9Ib 7oz Turbot while drifting the Shambles Bank. Most of the fishing in April was done on the Shambles Bank targeting Plaice and Turbot. The best Turbot was caught by Peter Gould of Dartford SAC who landed a 16 pounder. 80 year old George Denman landed two Turbot in concecutive drifts showing the youngsters how it's done. A 5Ib Plaice was caught by John Smart, and a 5Ib 8oz Plaice was landed by Richard Coles who wins Flamer Fish of the Month for April. 2006 Species count is now 27. 
MAY
The weather was awful  so only a few trips done. The offshore wrecks produced Pollack, Cod, Ling, Congers and the first Bass of the year. The Reefs were good for Bull Huss, Congers, Bream, Rays, Spurdogs, Smooth hounds and Tope. Turbot on the Shambles Bank. Species Count now at 36. Flamer Fish of the Month for May  was Mick Buthcer with an Undulate Ray weighing 18Ib 8oz.
JUNE
At last some nice weather. The reefs/banks produced some early Black Bream along with Bull Huss ,Congers, Rays and Tope. Bass from the shambles bank and Portland race area. A few Turbot up to 15Ib  and the odd Brill from the Shambles Bank. First West Country Trip of the year was done with a variety of species being caught and of course the social side was as good as ever. The wrecking was ok for Ling, Conger, Pollack, Bass, but only the occasional Cod. Species count now 42 for 2006. The Army Angling Championships were fished on the last two days of the month and Flamer III was Top Boat with most points. Flamer III June fish of the Month is Rob Portbury with a 10Ib Bass he caught on the Shambles Bank.
JULY
The Black Bream fishing was good with plenty of fish up to 4Ib. Tope and various rays from marks to the east of the port and Blonde Rays up to 20Ib from the Kidney bank. The reefs fished well for Bull Huss, Conger etc Bass from the Portland race area. Plaice up to 4Ib 8oz from the mussel beds. The Shambles again produced Turbot and Brill. Jim Planson caught a superb Brill of 8Ib only to be beaten a few days later by a nine pounder.  So Flamer III Fish of the Month for July is awarded to Gordon Self from Reading with his 9Ib Brill. Species count 43.
AUGUST
 The reefs/banks fished well for Bream, Huss, Congers, Rays, Tope and occasional Cod. The Kidney Bank was particularly good for Blonde Rays up to 22Ib. The Shambles bank was consistent as ever for Turbot and Brill. Offshore wrecks were fished on the small tides at anchor and produced plenty of Congers and some Ling. I had lots of entries for the fish of the month, plenty of good Bream and Rays were entered. The winner for Flamer August Fish of the Month is Gary Mackenzie with an Undulate Ray weighing 17Ib 8oz which he caught on the Shambles Bank. I have also awarded a junior Flamer  Fish of the Month for August which goes to Jenna Linwood aged 14 who landed a superb Black Bream weighing 5Ib 9oz.  Species count for 2006 is now 49.
SEPTEMBER
 During September the fishing was really good with lots of different species being caught, so much so that the Flamer species count for 2006 is now up to 53. The reefs produced plenty of Black Bream ,Bull Huss, Conger, Tope. The Mussel beds were also good for Black Bream and some Plaice. The inshore wrecks produced Pollack and Bream including a rare Red Bream. Two West Country trips were done with the later one seeing 28 different species caught. The Kidney Bank was good for Blonde Rays ,with 19 coming in one session up to 23 Ib, all were returned alive. The Shambles Bank was again consistant for Turbot and Brill. Flamer Fish of the month for September was Mick Beach with a Brill weighing 8Ib 8oz.
OCTOBER
The weather was not kind during October but on the trips that were done saw plenty of species and good fish  caught. Lots of Black Bream, Bull Huss, Congers and some Cod from the reefs. Bass in the Portland race area and also some Cod. The Whiting have showed up on the Adamant Bank a sure sign winter is coming. The Flamer species count for 2006 is now 56 which equals 2005's,with a John Dory and a Twaite Shad being the two recent additions. Rays have been a feature of Octobers catches from marks to the east, west and the Kidney Bank. Darren Hill landed his personal best Thornback Ray weighing 15Ib 8oz.Several Blondes up to 20Ib were caught. How ever the best ray was caught by Merrik Knight with an Undulate Ray of 18Ib 8oz and is  Flamer fish of the Month for October.
NOVEMBER
The weather was really good for about the first week of November, then the winter gales set in putting pay to the fishing trips. The Black Bream stayed late and seemed to be every where with some big catches being made. Bass and Cod came from the mussel beds and Portland race area. On the reefs/banks Rays, Conger, Huss, Cod, Whiting and Bream were caught. Did some Species hunts/comps  which are good at this time of year and  they produced plenty of species.
Flamer Fish of the Month for November was awarded to Dave Hobbs who caught a Striped Red Mullet weighing 2Ib 3oz which is a potential British record. It has been confirmed as a Striped Red Mullet by the British Museum. So it's a question of waiting for all the paper work to be done and the record verified.
 
DECEMBER
December lots of Congers up to 42Ib were caught on the in shore marks along with Bull Huss,Cod and Whiting.The best Whiting weighing 4Ib. The best Cod weighed 15Ib 10oz. On marks well to the West there were lots of Mackerel and Garfish caught while Whiting fishing. Species total for 2006 was 57.
