Report on-board Luna-Sea (Merlin)
After close monitoring of the weather this morning, we decided to run our planned Charter.
We set sail at 8.30 and stopped for a drift just North of the end perch for an hr or so. This produced some fantastic sized Mackerel and plenty of Gurnard.
Once our Anglers had their fix of Mackerel we decided to head off to Prestatyn to see what we could catch.
On Arrival the 1st Smoothound was landed and by the time we had to leave, we were well into double figures. There were also a few small Tope and the catch of the day was a beautiful large Bull Huss caught on a single trace with a 6.0 hook loaded with a whole Mackerel flapper.
We head back towards Rhyl and stopped again for a few more Mackerel with the last 15mins. Plenty more Mackerel and a solo Whiting.
Very happy Anglers and the rain & breeze did not dampen the Day

Today was scheduled for a planned maintenance day but a last minute request came in yesterday evening with a Father wanting to take his young children for a couple of hours mackerel fishing. I could not let the children down and decided to run a quick trip for them inshore at 8am with flat calm seas forecast.
We sailed 1mile North of the Harbour entrance and were inundated with Jumbo Mackerel from start to finish . There were also a nice handful of Gurnard landed by the smallest guy on board and he was made up. There were however double figures of Lesser Weaver but swiftly set free.
Once the fishing session was over, we set sail for home with a Proud Father, 3 happy Children and a Bucket of Jumbo Mackerel for good measure.
Families are very Welcome on Merlin and we believe it is important to get families with children out enjoying the sea and learning the skills of Angling.

We had a full 12 hours to play with today.
Wind much fresher than forecast which made some challenging conditions for a good while this morning.
The lads cracked on and pulled out some nice fish though.
They all landed tope up to the 40lb mark. 1 fish decided to get tangled and come in backwards to the boat with me carefully handlining her in...to then untangle her self the boat and take another 100 yards of line for another scrap! We did very well landing that one as the skin had started to fray his mainline!
After the lads had their tope fix we tried an inshore wreck where they all went home with a feed of Pollack and a solitary codling fillets. There were plenty of coalies hitting the feathers too, but only to around 1lb and a half.
Current operating procedures due to covid mean I am running private charters only with a max of 5 customers.
Prices whilst running with limited numbers are £200 5 hours. £300 8 hours for the boat.
Rod hire £5pp. Lugworm £3 a pack. Or feel free to bring your own tackle and bait.
If i am allowed to carry more passengers then individual trips can resume and I can allow more people onto charters with prices adjusted accordingly.

Hi Anglers During last week Tope fishing a lot of them about this year especially now. Offshore as many as 30 out in one day various sizes 12 lbs to 35 lbs. But inshore some real monsters turning up not in as many numbers but very large ones in excess of 50 lbs with a lot lost with bite outs. Mackerel still bit iffy at times especially on spring tides but plenty of whiting and the Tope taking them well. As many Bull Huss as you want as well often a nuisance when Tope fishing. Bit of a lump on today so plan A wasn't an option to get further offshore.
So we got plenty of mackerel to start off with for bait and went after the tope. Between the 5 lads in around 5 hours of fishing for them they had between 25-30 running well above 45lb. Plus plenty of dropped runs and snap offs. The tope fishing seems to be on fire at the moment!

Hi Anglers out over weekend masses of Tope about especially on Sunday. Not the monsters as before but plenty of them. A lot of bite throws and smash ups loosing good fish. hi anglers first commercial trip out yesterday due to travel restrictions to Wales which we followed to protect local community. went Tope fishing 4 out of water largest 40lbs rest 30lbs mark only one small one. Some monsters about lost lot more biting through 200lbs nylon traces. mackerel still poor the water is very coloured but plenty of whiting which tope took.
