Report on-board Cleveland Princess
First report of 2014 it covers two trips 10/11/ Jan Friday ran north off the church a few whiting for our efforts and not much else at the start of the flood we headed back to the Stanford Channel much the same, saturday ran off a bit with a big swell I didont know weather we would stop but we had a go for 2hrs a few Whiting and Dabs no Cod it got a bit more lumpy as the wind picked up so went inside to the Stanford again at the backend of the ebb we had a nice lot of Dabs and a few decent sized Whiting,we are hoping that the Cod will show very soon as the reports that we are getting looks promising they are not to far away so don't miss the chance of getting that all time POB and a £100 top prize,Brian

Report on-board Mistress
I got a phone call late the other night asking if i was fishing the next morning, i had no plans so said id take the lads from Hull.

It started out quite slow, with is taking around 10 fish on the last of the flood, but with the tides being smaller than usual i had a different plan today to fish a few spots i hadnt visited for a while.
we had to wait till mid morning till the tide came right for us.
A short move and a bit of jiggery pokery with the anchor saw a flurry of better fish aboard for us. including a belter for young Alex taking the scales to just under double figures a nice 9lb 12oz Cod!
as the tide changed in this spot we moved again taking a flurry of nice fish, the stamp of fish was certainly a lot better than of late with many fish between 4lb and 6lb.
not as many fish as we have been catching lately but we finished up with 30 odd Cod for the day, the best angler taking 15.

Report on-board High Flyer 2
Today was putting us between a rock and hard place, forcast was bringing in high winds for the afternoon and with strong tide we decided to stay in the Roads and joined all the other charter boats who were in the same situation. Fishing wasnt great to start as we missed the start of the ebb by an hour but we stayed till the slack giving it everything we could. Some measly whiting for our efforts very poor, but not alone think one of the boats had small codling next door to us. We decided to move to one of my inshore flatty spots at slack which resulted in flatties straight away. Some decent size whiting followed and we had only the one codling today pictured here with young Will showing us oldies up! Was a most enjoyable day despite the fishing being bit on the slow side, big thanks to Tony for doing all the organising and lovely stew he brought. Also to Will,Alex,Steve,Duncan,Martin,Carl,Damien and Andy all tried very hard i thought, least weather was on our side and started to pick up just as we headed in. Much appreciated men for the day will see you as discussed for our summer session looking forward to it. All the best. Jon.

the water was coloured and a massive tide running(6.0m).I and the skipper managed 6 cod a piece with another 4 being landed on the boat plus half a dozen jumbo whiting(+2.5lb),
squid and lug plus crab cart was the order of the day with most fish being hooked on the top of the pennel.
fish size was smaller than the marks at Robin Hoods Bay but all went away happy.
average fish size was 2-3lb with the largest pushing 6lb and a couple of undersize "chuck-backs

Fishing Report by Adam Shaw

Dec 2013 by Adam Shaw
Report on-board Warrior
Well we have had the majority of our winter fishing and i have to say it was probably the worst year for cod we’ve had in the last 10 seasons. The only good thing was the size of the fish with half of them being over 20lb the best fish being caught by Bex, The Skipper of Shaw Thing II, weighing 32lb. Warriors best fish was 25lb caught by Richard Clarke who is a regular with us, his fish was massive but a bit on the skinny side, another month it would have been a potential boat record.

Even though the cod were shy the Channel Whiting were phenomenal with many days over a hundred fish landed between 11/2-2lb .The best whiting of the season was just over 4lb, this beat last years record by almost 1lb.
There is a school of thought that the abundance of whiting was the reason for the lack of cod, being that the whiting are fast ferocious feeders, they may of been hovering up the food sources leaving the cod short of feed. There did not seem to be the amount of sprat shoals around for the time of year which are a regular winter food source. One large cod we gutted was full of pissers, a hard poll-op type growth that attaches to the sea bed, certainly not a regular food source for cod, I can only assume that the fish was struggling to find its normal quarry so it ate what it could to survive.
All in all it was a strange year with the late start to the bream season, then the abnormally hot calm weather, the fishing never seemed to really settle down in to its regular pattern so its not a surprise that by the end of the year things were difficult.
We are going to carry on with cod trips in to January to see what comes up, there are some special offers on Shaw Thing II. This time of year you can pick up spur dog, big blonde ray, conger and the elusive 30lb plus cod.
