We managed another day at sea today as another gap in the appeared!

only 3 lads booked on and with tides being as the are uptiding was the order of the day again.

the first stop produced only one fish and a few half hearted bites,
so a quick move saw us straight into fish which came aboard at fairly steady rate the whole of the ebb tide.
as slackwater passed and the boat started swinging we re-positioned and as the tide got away the rods started bouncing again.

no monsters again today, the biggest fell to Robert from Doncaster, taking the scales round to over 6lb.
everybody caught plenty of fish, the boat final tally was between 65 and 70 codlings between the 4 of us, the best angler of the day took 30 codlings himself, fishing doesnt get much better than this!

best bait by far was black gully worm tipped with squid.

    4 Hour Uptiding Trip

We put together a 4 hour trip for Holiday maker Mark from Leeds, as soon as I advertised it, the trip filled in literally a day! sailing 9am till 1pm, obviously suits a few people!

It was a very successful 4 hours, with everyone catching a few fish, loads and loads of missed bites due to everyones over eagerness to get their first fish of 2014!

The best lad as it turned out was Mark from Leeds taking 4 cod home. the best cod was around 5 and 1/2lb which fell to Joe from Hull, Bucko off the forum also landed a nice cod around 4lb in weight.

the boat total for the trip was 20 codlings, all between 2lb and 5 1/2lb. It was a thoroughly enjoyable short session on the water with some cracking folks.

    Report on-board Dawn Venture

had my experienced(and very keen!) Latvian fishers out this sunday(29/12) on a beautiful December day when wind and tide aligned plus colour in the water to give cracking uptiding conditions.
took a gamble and went to fish Robin Hoods bay area and it paid off!
squid, worm and crab cart combinations took all the fish...all bar 2 being hooked on the top pennel (3/0 circle)
    final tally was:
    1x13.5lb
    1x12.5lb
    1x10lb
    2x9lb
    5x8lb
    9x1.5lb
    10x 4-6lb

best bag was 6 cod for 36.5lb(inc 13.5lb fish)

give a pound or two it is nearly 10st of cod across 29 fish...not a bad stamp

it was a slow start and a poor end .but the bit in the middle produced 12 codling......1 at 9.5lb,4 at 1.5lb and the rest were in the 4-6lb bracket.
all fish were hooked on the top of the pennel on a 3/0 circle and the bait of choice was squid and black lug wrap.

  • 28/12/2013 Fishing Report by Bruce Hough on Supreme (Rhyl, Denbighshire)

28 Dec 2013 by Bruce Hough

    Report on-board Supreme

I've fished aboard Supreme for quite a few years now, both on the new vessel and going back when Steve had the twin-hulled catamaran, and one thing that has never changed in all the years is Steve's determination to put his anglers amongst their target fish.
This trip was no exception, being a full time shore fisherman on the Mersey I know how hard the fishing has been this season so I felt I must say a massive hats off to Steve after once again putting us on the money...
Yes, the fishing was rock hard and many anglers had to settle for the occasional decent Whiting, but through his sheer perseverance I finished the day with 3 nice Cod for the table..
As ever Steve looked after us all with his famous pasties which were more than welcome on a cold afternoon..
If you want a trip with a skipper that genuinely 'gives a shit', then Supreme is for you, this bloke has come up with the goods time n time again for me personally... A Top skipper with extensive knowledge, what more can I say!
Top marks to you Steve, thanks again and all the best to you and your family for the new year, may 2014 be even more successful and wind permitting I'll hopefully join you for a few more trips on the briny!!

  • 12/2013 Fishing Report by Kevin McKie on Size Matters (Craobh Haven, Argyll & Bute)

    Dec 2013 by Kevin McKie

    Report on-board Size Matters

We have come to the end of Brigand’s first year and what a successful year it has been!

Brigand Charters began on the 1st of June 2013 and has seen a total of 27 different species of fish, all caught around Liverpool Bay and the River Mersey. This included Tope to 40lb, Thornback Rays to 15lb, Huss to 13lb, Pollock to over 7lb, and Cod to over 8lb.

We appreciate everyone's support during 2013 and are currently in the process of introducing a monthly competition and boat records. This will see us give away a free Charter to the winners, and hope to have these running from the beginning of 2014.

Brigand Charters wishes you a Merry Christmas and all the best for 2014!!

    December 2013

Species caught: Cod, Dab, Pouting, Rockling (Five-Bearded), Whiting.

December saw quite a few cancellations due to the persistence of southerly and south-easterly gales. On the days we did get out, the fishing was a lot better than it was in November. There were quite a few Cod about, averaging around 3lb 8oz – though we did get them up to 8lb 4oz. There was also plenty of large Whiting over 1lb, Dabs and the odd Pouting. If this trend continues, January should be the prime month with the Cod being roughly six weeks behind last year. Hopefully, we should start to see double figure Cod in the coming month.

    Notable Charter:

On December 10th we had Simon Everett aboard Brigand from Total Sea Fishing magazine doing an article on Mersey Cod fishing. Although we had a good day, we can’t say too much about it as the article will be featured in the February edition of the magazine.

Towards the end of the month, December 29th, we had a group of individuals on board and it was Cod time straight from the off. In total we landed 10 Cod, weighing between 2lb 8oz and 4lb 6oz, along with plenty of little Codling, big Whiting, Dabs and the odd Pouting. The star of the day was young Daniel Parker (age 11) who caught his first Cod at 4lb 6oz and was also the biggest of the day! He was fishing with his dad Gavin and had such a good day that they both booked again for January.

Two days on the trot! uptiding again today. with a lift in the tides i was expecting a bit faster action today.
it took a couple of moves before we located a few then it was steady away again for the rest of the day,

I found with moving regularly we would get a pocket of fish then move to the next spot, we amassed around 40 codlings again today.

we saw a few better fish today though with a few around the 6lb mark. still plenty of fish int he 2-3lb range keeping the rods rattling!

the best consistent bait remains to be a black gulley worm tipped with squid. Crab cart fished helped bag a few bonus fish today though.

Uptiding today. Plenty of colour in the water, which is always a good sign!

The fishing was fairly steady today, we had 4 on board as a couple of others failed to show up again.

Between the 5 of us though we managed a steady 40 codlings. No big ones today unfortunately the majority being 2-3lb in weight we had a handful pushing 5lb.

Still the lads got plenty of action with 2 or 3 lads getting over 10 fish apiece.

Pictured is Mistress and Whitby regular Jack Vero with one of his better fish, Jack managed 11 cod for the day

  • 29/12/2013 Fishing Report by Alan Milford on Moonstone - now Why Worry! (Littlehampton, West Sussex)

29 Dec 2013 by Alan Milford

Report on-board Moonstone - now Why Worry!

Finally we had a break in the weather and a new crew joined me on Moonstone to hunt for some cod.

We headed out at 8am to our first mark about 3 miles off Littlehampton.

The lads were into whiting and dogs from the off and one very good fish was dropped before it got to the boat....a bit more attention to the drag would have saved this one.

We moved off to a second mark as the tide picked up and joined a few other local boats.

Again the whiting were showing but then a good ray jumped on the hook to make up for the lost cod earlier on. The drag was set perfectly this time!

As the tide turned the anchor broke free so we took this cue to move to a mark a few miles away.

As the boat swung there was a shout and a good fish on....this turned out to be the first conger of many with the best easily beating 40lb.

The light started to fade so we headed back in just after 4pm with just enough water to get back into port.

A good day of mixed fishing even if we didn't find the target species.
