  • 07/07/2013 Fishing Report by Malcolm Collins on Just Mary (Christchurch, Dorset)

7 Jul 2013 by Malcolm Collins

    Report on-board Just Mary

An interesting weekend 6th/7th July aboard 'Just Mary' from Poole. My hire rod group had better quality BLACK BREAM plus Pouting, Wrasse, and Mackerel, from a reef to the East of Poole Bay. Baits were mainly ragworm and squid cocktail presented on Skippers own two hook paternoster or flowing rig traces. Groundbaiting, as always when Bream fishing, was the secret to our success. On Sunday my more experienced Anglers had better quantity but a bit less quality Bream plus Mackerel (plenty, plenty and more in our crystal clear Poole Bay waters) Garfish, Wrasse, Gurnard, a single Pout, an unwelcome Tope and a bonus fish in the shape of an UNDULATE RAY of 14lb 8oz for veteran Angler RON HORN. Ron uses an old green 'Milbro' 8 foot boat/pier rod from the 1960's (I know coz my Dad used to have an identical beast), Mitchell 624 and suspicious looking braid which could well be the old 'Dacron'. This was Ron's first ever Undulate Ray on the first ever time that he has fished with me. It fell to fresh Mackerel fillet on a half circle 6/0 hook and flowing trace at slack water right at the end of the day ! Well done Ron !

    Report on-board Upholder

    July (early) Catch report
Last weekend started with Lee Campbell from Benton catching a 14 lb ling on Mackerel baited daylights.
This was Lee's first ever boat trip last Friday.

Saturday's trip also managed a couple of decent fish but there was no great numbers of fish.
Tony Crawford from Carlisle caught a 13 lb Cod on a 3 inch shad.

Andrew Mackie caught the biggest fish of the weekend and his personal best ever fish a 15 lb Ling which took a Mackerel strip fished on a long flowing trace.

Rick Fisher from Beverly North Yorkshire also caught his personal best ever fish a 12 lb 10 oz ling which also took a long flowing trace baited with Mackerel.

The advantage of using a single hook on a long flowing trace is that when the fish is hooked there are no loose hooks to foul the wreck when retrieving the fish.
For a good job there were a few good size fish as the number of fish caught are well down from June.
As usual the cod fishing always seem to get harder when the Mackerel come in and at present the Mackerel are in great numbers here at Amble.
