    CRACKING WEATHER!

Two angling trips, on Saturday and Sunday, again in good weather, but not quite as calm as Friday, saw steadyish pollack fishing on the offshore wrecks. Fish came in to 7 lb and Mally also had the first decent cod of the year at about 4lb. Hopefully they will become more plentiful through the next couple of weeks towards the end of June.

The annual algal bloom is at its height at the moment but we did notice over the weekend that it is starting to die off. The algae multiply so rapidly that the water is stripped of the nutrients the algae feed on so the population crashes and dies off. When this happens the water in the Conwy River has a distinct, strong smell of ozone. So hopefully the water will clear over the next couple of weeks as the bloom dies off, allowing the mackerel to come in, along with many of the other summer species. The algal bloom is an essential part of the marine ecosystem and most fish and shellfish species time their spawnings with the bloom. Their larvae then have food to eat whilst they spend their first few weeks suspended in the plankton.

I still have a space on a two day Isle of Man trip, 30th June - 1st July, £165 including 1 night B and B, if anyone fancies a short angling break.

Windy old North easterly again, getting fed up of the weather, this is mid June you know! Tried hiding up the Spoils for a bit of protection first fish small pup smoothies, as tide eased made our way North to skate ground.Ended up with 3 crackers pictured here , the fish not the ugly anglers! Plenty of dogs about keeping us busy too. Moved after the ebb got bit uncomfortable back South ending up with more dogs, one lovely size smoothound for Brian worth a photo, small smoothy pups again and few dabs. Thanks to local lads Mitch, Collin and Ron, Brian and son Jay, Steve Clarke and John Halliwell, was a most enjoyable day despite the wind, plenty of stick all round, never mind Collin the lads told me the skate tasted great you can always buy some at tescos if you cant catch your own!!!! All the best men. Jon. (High Flyer)

    Report on-board High Flyer 2

Very windy again today fron the north east, suppossed to be mid june ,weather more like october. Headed north to a small hole on the inside which generally pays off. John pictured here picked up our only skate of the day ,nice fish of 9lb, the others getting few reasonable size smoothounds which are starting to make a show along with the spotties who today seemed a bit shy for some reason. Moved south into the Roads for a bit of shelter, more dogs and picked up about dozen nice dabs in total to finish the day off. Big thanks to all the lads who came from Northampton appreciate you making the journey and especially to Mick for organizing the trip. Also John first time on the Flyer and Dave Smith too. Many thanks men, hoping for better weather next time, enjoyed the day though lots of good banter as usual! All the best. Jon. (High Flyer)

We set off at seven sharp, hit a couple of wrecks and fishing was quiet at first and then we manged to find a few on another wreck. There was some nice fish around the 8lb mark and a nice ling at around the 7lb mark. From then on the fishing just got better. We headed out a bit to have look on some ground and ended the day with 48 cod from 2lb upto 9lb mark and a ling 7lb and also some nice 2lb coalies which was nice to see and plenty of other undersize cod and ling returned safely.

  • 06/06/2013 Fishing Report by Rich Ward on Shy-Torque III (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

6 Jun 2013 by Rich Ward

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

We did our first sharking trip of the year this week, Weds/Thurs. We sailed full of trepidation after last year's results, and with no Mackerel showing much, I guessed it was going to be a struggle. The lads, however, had brought 20 stone of frozen Mackerel which they had gathered on their last trip last year.
We arrived at the grounds at 10.45am and had our first chum over the side at 11.15am. We managed around 40 fresh Mackerel, which was a bonus, so we could get 4 live baits out on the rods. At 12.15pm we had our first run, and after an hour and ten minutes we had our first shark of 2013 on board!! We re-chummed and at 4.30pm we had a second run, and after another hour and fifteen minute battle we had our second shark on board!! What a result!!!
At 6.30pm we had another run which sadly we lost, and at 8.30pm we had yet another run. Again, we lost it after an hour's battle. Both these fish escaped the hook.
The next morning (after a broken night's sleep!), we re-chummed for the flood tide. At 11.30am we had another run. At first I thought it was a seal that had taken the bait, as there had been a couple playing around closeby ten minutes previously. How wrong I was!! With the rod bent double and line screaming off, it became evident that this was no seal. Whatever it was had reached the bottom (45 fathoms) in 20 seconds!
    Another fish on.
Two hours later and still no sight of the fish. Another 40 minutes and we had our first sighting. The fish then proceeded to do lap after lap around the boat, dragging the angler (Sam) around with him. After another fifteen minutes, it seemed evident that the fish was ready to be boated. The shark gate was opened and we offered the fish a warm welcome on board. The fish obviously didn't like the look of me, knelt down ready for it, and with one thrash of his head, got me in the forearm with two of his teeth! OUCH!
However, ten minutes later, and with a few drops of my blood on the deck, we got him on board.
We measured the fish, length and girth, and with the formula/equation which we have from Southampton Oceanographic Centre, we estimated the fish to be around 365lbs in weight.
There has been speculation over the said formula/equation as some people do not believe it accurately measures the weight of the Porbeagle Shark. If the formula is however correct, then we have not only broken our own personal record, but have also set another port record for the heaviest rod-caught fish out of Whitby.
Sam is pictured with his prize!!!
    And now....for a celebratory drink!!

    09.06.2013.

Some lovely fishing again today aboard the boat with our regular team from just up the road. Lads from Redcar, Eston and Loftus and surrounding areas.

A good days picking of Cod and Ling again today for the boys. The results on the inshore marks still not good enough for the Shy-Torque crew. Burn that fuel and get to the fish!!!!!!!!!! :-(((((((((((

Best fish today fell to young Josh from Loftus at exactly 10lbs. Nice plump fish mate. Well done!!

    Josh is pictured.
