    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

After the recent spell of shabby weather, I hadn’t been to sea for ten days, so it was a bit of a blank canvass on Friday. With a 4.8m tide and a Westerly wind, we were destined to spend most of the day on rough ground and wrecks at slack.

We managed to catch plenty of Mackerel and then started off on the three mile ground. The first three drifts saw us take 5 or 6 fish each drift, which was encouraging. The drift speed increased, so I opted to run out to the five mile ground. Three drifts and one Pouting later I ran back inside to the 3 mile ground!! We fished a couple of wrecks at slack, for a few small fish but nothing special.

Then Nick Gray hooked a fish which ran off haphazardly and then came towards the boat. Just before we could see the fish, the hook pulled…..arrrgh!! On the last drift of the day on the ground, Ian Kellock landed a nice 15lb Ling……which made me think about the plan for the next day.

Armed with that information, I had the pleasure of The Keel Inn Fishing Club today. I’d explained the plan of staying around the 3 mile ground, as I was confident there was an odd decent fish about. There’s always a big element of luck, right drift, right presentation, right state of tide.

The fishing wasn’t easy, but the lads took the advice offered and were fishing either Mackerel flappers or whole fillets. After picking away a few fish here and there, the biggest being a 9lb Ling we just kept on the move, picking up odd fish each drift. Then “it” happened!!

Steve Thornton hooked a good fish which gave a similar “funny” type fight as Nick had the day before. After a good tussle we managed to slip the net under a lovely Tope which we estimated between 35-40lb….awesome.
Whilst I was sorting out the Tope, “Chips” Mallin shouted he had a good fish on. Thankfully Tog Edwards took over netting duty and they dragged a lovely 19lb 0.5oz Ling aboard. What a drift…..total carnage!!

The fishing certainly wasn’t prolific, but we had some nice fish. A massive thanks to everyone for the last two days, you were brilliant company.
