    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

After a lovely family holiday last week, it was great to get back out again today.

With it being small neap tides, I had only the wrecks in mind. We headed out and gathered up plenty of fresh Mackerel before heading south to try a few offshore wrecks. I had an experienced group of lads aboard, so I was confident that if the fish were feeding, they’d get amongst them.

We arrived at our first wreck just as the Flood tide kicked in. The Southerly wind was beating the tide so we had a haphazard drift across the wreck. In three drifts we took only a couple of strap Ling, so we moved on.
With the lines streaming a bit; once I’d worked out where to set the drift, the second wreck was a bit better. We caught Ling every run over. Best drift we had six on at once. Nothing massive, but a few went into the boxes.

That kind of shaped the day. Once sport dried up, we pushed on to the next wreck. Bait traces dominated (as expected), but Steve Colbourne took a nice brace of Codling when he dropped a Shad down. We had a drop on one of my “favouritist” wrecks and amongst a few other fish, Daz Hilton hooked a really decent fish. After four massive thumps on the rod it came off….gutted!! I know a good one when I see one and that wasn’t small. I’d always recommend a minimum of 100lb mono for muppet traces on the wrecks. The big fish will be back in the wreck in a flash unless you bully them.

We kept on the move throughout the day and whilst sport wasn’t frantic, we caught every drift, which was good. “Top rod” today was Derek Coulson who won the boat sweep with a 9lb Ling. Derek is always super consistent and has a knack of just getting it right.

All in all, it was a great day out for me, spent in excellent company. I love having a boat full of regulars, the banter is always top notch.

Although….the next Pouting that Jamie Britton puts in my pocket will see him with a yellow card!!! LOL
