Report on-board Just Mary
Hi to All my Readers and this is the latest Report from the Angling Charter Boat 'Just Mary' from Poole. Another day off on Friday due to more adverse weather this May with a cold front and Gale Force winds sweeping across our part of the Country. Unfortunate because we had the day 'Sold' to one of my Regulars Tom Whitcher from Blandford and his visiting Northern relatives (relatives by marriage because Tom is about as 'Dark Deepest Dorset' as you can get and is a very skilled Brickie in this part of the World). So onto yesterday, Saturday, and a fresh Southwesterly against an ebbing tide saw us depart the mooring and head for some marks off Swanage to look for Undulate Rays and Bream and some protection from the weather. Mark number one was already anchored by another Poole Boat but that was to be expected as that previous Boats' owner was my good friend and another Mentor Ron Weldon and we used to fish that mark together in the past. I expect its' still on his plotter ! Fortunately the mark is some scrubby ground and there's room for two so we anchored nearby. As the tide slowly picked up we had our first Undulate Ray, double figure but not landed due to the Angler using only 20lb trace line ! Please, please listen to me, we use 80/90/100 lb mono not because of the weight of expected fish but what that fish can do to lesser line ! Always use heavy mono when Ray fishing or you will lose them 9 times out of 10. With an increasing SW wind over ebbing tide we moved to mark number 2 and joined Doug on 'San Gina' from Swanage and my good friend Tom Greasty on 'San Gina II' who returned from 'round the corner. All three of us happily sitting in a line fishing a west to East reef. Bit slow in the conditions and the wind was cold but we had another smaller Undulate, Dogs and some Bream. We were rudely interrupted by 'Rapid Fisher' and although I told Paul to go outside of me to the East he tried to squeeze between me and Tom. We had to fender him off at one stage and I expect the pics to appear on Facebook and a video on Youtube soon, my blokes weren't amused, sorry Paul but that's going to cost you at least one Guinness if not more ! As tide slackened the Bream came on more and more as I expected and as the tide turned Bream were being landed all around the boat. No more Undulates because the lads were enjoying the Bream on bream gear and one of them had a bonus large edible crab. Thanks for reading this as I sit indoors having cancelled the next two days. I will be glad to see June and bye bye May, you've been all over the place ! Ta Malc.
PS. Just a quick PS sorry ! My apologies to Tom Greasty and his Anglers for the actions of my mate Paul who rudely disturbed your fishing, and my thanks to RM 'Dinger' Bell for helping out and to Tom and Kev my Regulars for coming along at short notice and thus making it more affordable to the 'Fishermans Haunt' crew who would have paid £51.42 each instead of £40 as per normal due to their lack of numbers.View Boats Page
