A cracking forecast for today allowing us to stretch our legs a bit. Using the tide we decided to have a go at a couple of wrecks some 25 miles North of the harbour. One of our regular crews had the boat booked today. Gin clear water out there with all the fish taking the shads and the pirks. The " motley " crew pictured are from left to right : Paul Pantellerisco ( Southport ) Guy Wrightson ( Pontefract ) John Purvis ( Whitby ) Gary Snaith ( Whitby ) Kev Sixsmith ( Whitby ) and Jim from Southport. Rich Simpson took the helm whilst I got the picture. Cheers Richy !! Winter fishing so often better than the summer here at Whitby as these lads can vouch for !!

A bit of a blustery start to the day today (13.11) but by lunch time the wind eased and it turned into a lovely day. Worked the 9 mile ground all day with a good number of cod and ling to around the 8lb mark. All falling to the bait. Mainly squid baited hokkai rigs. Sadly forgot the camera so no pics today !!

Last Sunday saw our first inshore ( anchored ) trip of the season. Plenty of codlings running at the moment after a number of fresh North / North East winds. Pictured here are 4 of the lads aboard last Sunday with just a few of their catch. Pictured left to right are Tim Reynolds, Martin Catley, Alistair Watson and my crewman John Wilcock. These are the best of the cod caught with fish to 9.5lbs.

The inshore ( anchor ) fishing is often termed as " uptiding " To catch fish at anchor it is not always necessary to launch your bait uptide like a lot of people think. All the cod in this photo were in fact taken downtide of the boat ( NO CASTING ! ) Simply lowering your bait down away from the boat can work as well, as these lads proved. I believe that the term "Uptiding" puts a lot of anglers off because they think that there is a certain specialist skill required for it. NOT SO! Anyone can do it ! A lighter rod can better for the job but we have lads who fish with us with 20 -30lb class gear and catch perfectly fine with it!

The Whitby Charter Skippers are holding their winter inshore competition from the 4th December - 12th Dec inc. With a 1st prize of £1000.00 and various daily cash prizes too it's well worth a go !! Nice to grab a grand for Xmas!!!!

To make a booking for the comp please contact me on 07733 233352 or 01947 601233 or mail me at richardward384@yahoo.co.uk

    Happy fishing !!!

After an extreemley breezy week this last week it's at long last looking like we are in for a couple of settled days this weekend here at Whitby. We were off on Thursday this week and found a reasonable picking of cod and ling on the ground on the 9 mile, so it's back there for starters for us tomorrow and then some wrecking. I spoke to a couple of the other skippers today and know that there are boats with space this weekend so get phoning around lads!! Rich.

If any of you intrepid anglers out there have ever thought about trying a spot of shark fishing then you could be doing yourselves a massive favour by choosing the fantastic port of Whitby in North Yorkshire. The targeted sharks we on the Shy-Torque III are aiming to catch are the porbeagles which mainly run off here from May through to the end of October. The heaviest porbeagles we have boated to press here off Whitby were both caught this year and one is pictured here. They were both nudging the 300lb mark!!! The lucky anglers who boated them were John Wilcock from Bradford and Dave Brown ( picture ) from Hull. Both fish took well over an hour to land !! We also reckon we had even bigger shark than this on the line this year. One of the " Ones that got away " actually bending the hook almost straight !! Puts paid to the idea that you have to go abroad to experience BIG GAME FISHING !!! If you want to have a go at these magnificent fish next year drop me a line or an Email.

On a recent shark fishing trip we were lucky enough to come across something rather unusual on the Shy-Torque. The day was uneventful regarding the sharks however during slack water my crewman John Wilcock decided to have a go at a little bottom fishing. After 5 minutes or so he hooked into what was going to give him one hell of a scrap for the next 20! With two "runs" on the bottom which peeled off line like a big game fish he eventually pursuaded it to leave the depths and started coaxing it toward the boat. On route the fish made 3 or 4 heavy dives and if it weren't for Johns 50+ years of sea angling experience ( not all with myself !! ) the fish would probably have smashed him to bits ! On seeing the fish approach the surface I decided that the landing net was not going to be sufficient and decided on the gaff. A good decision indeed as the fish nearly dragged me over the side !! John managed this fine fish to the boat using a Shakespeare 30lb class rod armed with 30lb Berkeley Whiplash braid, but just to make it really impressive he was using a 49p 3 x hook Fladen daylight trace bought from our local Boyes store! A credit to both Fladen and John. Well done mate.

Sadly we have just seen the end of another cracking summer angling festival here at Whitby. After losing the 1st two days to severe Northerly storms we managed to get the remaining 21 days of the competition in, some of the days a little breezy though!! We on the Shy-Torque didn't manage to take the winning fish this year however we did manage to get what was classed amongst the majority of anglers over the 3 weeks to be the best fish caught in the competition. The leading cod up until the last couple of days was 15lb. My old mate Guy Wrightson fished with us for the last week and on Thursday 8th managed to capture this fine beasty of 17lb 5.5oz on a swim shad. We had to travel to a wreck some 39 miles from Whitby to find him but it was worth it in the end. Guy is pictured here with his fish with which he will receive £500.00 from the Whitby Charter Skippers Association at our presentation night soon. Well done mate !!

The second sharking trip of the year took place aboard the Shy-Torque on Monday this week. A group of 4 lads from Skegness joined us on this mission. The weather was perfect for the job on the morning of the trip and remained that way all day. The mackerel fishing was excellent throughout the day making for plenty of chum for the lads. Based on our last sharking trip 2 Mondays ago ( pictures to follow ! ) we really were hoping for great results again. With the anchor dropped at around 9.0am things were going a little slow to say the least until at 11.45am Greg Parkin pictured here managed to beat this fine Porbeagle to the boat after a 40 minute battle. Well done to you Greg and looking forward to seeing you all again on your 2 day mission at the end of September.

The fishing just gets better here at Whitby at the moment. Most of the inshore marks both ground and wrecks are showing excellent signs. The main reason for this is the amount of sprats which have arrived recently. A mixed group of lads today had a good box of fish each from the inshore spots. Pictured here is Paul Siddle from Patrington Nr Hull with a nice cod of 10lb.

Amongst plenty of cod caught aboard the Shy-Torque today was this lovely ling of 22lbs caught by Newcastle based angler Grant Watkins. Well done mate. Especially as it was on a 20-30lb class rod !
