    Aug 2021 by Kevin McKie

We have just finished our second 10 day live aboard charter of the year from Pwllheli.

The trip didn’t start off too good as bad weather delayed our original start date but when we did finally set sail the weather was looking good for the next five days.

Team Pot Noodle (Josh, Ash and Eddie) plus Tony was the lads we had onboard for this trip, the lads where hell bent on going to the shelf off the west coast of Ireland and the weather window looked good to do it.

After a 200 mile steam from Pwllheli we finally arrived in Baltimore to top up the fuel tanks and head out to the shelf, sadly the weather window had changed a lot, now we only had two days on the shelf before the first of three low pressure systems hit south west Ireland.

We decided not to gamble, play it safe and stay one step ahead of the weather, so we didn’t bother going the shelf and headed south to some deep water reefs.

The fishing was incredible for Pollack and Coalfish, every drop was 3 to 4 fish per person and the amount of fish on the sonar was like something you would see in Norway.

At one point the Coalfish where spitting out live Boar fish We have never seen them before in the flesh they are a very strange looking fish only found in deep water.

Every drift we had sharks attacking the Pollack and Coalfish, at first we thought it was porgies so we set up our shark tackle but after several hours fishing and lots of small blue sharks to 60lb we realised it was just small blues attacking the fish.

We did get one hell of a surprise in our chum slick it was the biggest Leather Back Turtle I have ever seen, Sam did get a video of it that we will post in the future, you don’t see them every day in our waters that’s for sure.

Also during the night the lads witnessed large pods of dolphins smashing into Garfish, Souries and Squid around the boat while it was lit up with the deck lights shining into the water.

The next morning we now decided to anchor the reef for Conger, Ling and Six Gill Sharks but the reef was extremely snaggy we couldn’t get any tackle back at all, on the sonar it looked flat in places but after Tony put his water wolf camera down we seen the seabed was made up of massive boulders fused together with cracks in between them.

So it was time to head out to one of our favourite places to fish the one and only Jurassic Park, when we arrived the sea was very sloppy and confused there was no set direction of the swell making our bait presentation very difficult indeed, on top of this the small Congers where having a field day smashing our baits up, after a long 2 hours and 40 minutes we landed our first Six Gill Shark, the lads managed 6 Six Gill Sharks to 274lb in total during the 12 hour session it was very tough going due to the conditions.

Tony had shark tags from NOAA and we tagged his first Six Gill Shark of 214lb, this is the first Six Gill Shark every tagged in UK waters.

The lads also witnessed five Sunfish all together swimming passed the boat as they where migrating north for the summer.

Now it was time for the extremely long steam to the Celtic Deeps where the weather forecast was ok for the next few days.

When we arrived in the Celtic Deeps the algae bloom was terrible and it was a job to find an area that was clear enough to start sharking.

The lads fished through the night and only managed three small Blue Shark, this was due to massive algae blooms passing through, when we hit a clear spot that’s where we got the odd Shark.

In the morning we decided to head to Milford Haven to refuel the boat and stock up on food, drink and bait.

The next day was the last good day to go sharking due to the bad weather forecast for the rest of the trip, after speaking to our friends in Ireland they told us where the water was clear of algae in the deeps.

The lads managed 9 Blues to 101lb and 2 Porgies to 280lb (estimated), after a 20 minute fight the biggest one got tail wrapped as we got it to the surface i grabbed the trace it unraveled its self and shot off like a rocket only for the hook to pull.

Thankfully the shark was not left with a trace wrapped around it and was back where it belonged, we also lost a much bigger shark that we had on for about 15 minutes, we think the bait had gone up the trace and another shark bit through the leader because it was a very clean cut.

We also seen a big Blue shark basking on the surface and a big Porgie but they where not interested in the baits at all.

That night we had to steam to Arklow on the east coast of Ireland to take shelter from the strong westerly winds forecast.

The wreck fishing was very good for Pollack to 8lb, we did try sharking for Threshers and Porgies but only managed three Tope to 30lb.

Please note all sharks where released unharmed, we are currently in talks with a university who want us to satellite tag sharks next year for research purposes.

While we spent time on the east coast of Ireland we where shocked to see all cafes, restaurants, pubs and cinemas not letting people in unless they had proof they had been double jabbed with the experimental jab.

To witness this first hand all of us where in shock even the lads who had been double jabbed thought it was terrible.

This is what’s coming to the UK next if we let this happen, what sort of place are we leaving for our kids if you can not go into any indoor establishment without having proof of having had an experimental jab?

I for one as a business owner and father will not be supporting any business that is in favour of the experimental double jab passport.

Thankfully in Ireland we found some very clever business owners who refused to segregate people regardless of weather or not they had been experimentally double jabbed, these establishments where very busy indeed and doing far better than the businesses in favour of the experimental double jab passport.

Sadly we are fully booked in Pwllheli for the rest of the year, we do have dates available for Skate fishing in Scotland.

    Jul 2021 by Kevin McKie

Over the last few weeks the fishing from Pwllheli has been like fishing near the equator, extremely hot, bright sunshine and no wind making conditions very difficult for catching bait fish.

The wreck fishing has been excellent for numbers of fish but the average size has dropped, our best day seen 160+ Pollack, Cod, Coalfish and Ling with only a few into double figures most where 3lb to 5lb.

We did manage to go shark fishing the conditions where very poor, bright sunshine, no wind, lots of algae, very little drift and the surface water temperature was 23.3 degrees this is the hottest I have ever seen the sea temperature in the UK before.

The lads worked hard and managed to catch 13 Blues to 80lb+ and just the one Porgie for there efforts.

The Bream fishing has been good but the weed has been a massive problem at different stages of the tide on the reef making fishing very difficult.

As for the Tope fishing it’s been hit and miss this is due to the fresh mackerel situation, some days we get 20 to 50 mackerel other days only a hand full.

Sadly we are fully booked in Pwllheli for the rest of the year, we do have dates available for Skate fishing in Scotland.

  • 07/2021 Fishing Report by Kevin McKie

    Jul 2021 by Kevin McKie

With fishing holidays abroad being a thing of the past due to the NEW NORMAL of covid restrictions and horse plop being forced on the general public from our so called government.

So we decided to start to offer 10 day live aboard charters, the purpose of these live aboard charters is to showcase the fishing we have available around the British isles and to give our anglers the opportunity to experience being a boat pikey.

The plan on each trip is to fish for anything and everything while trying to stay one step ahead of the weather all the time.

When the weather is good we go the distance and when the weather is not so good we fish inshore if possible or take the day off go the pub and talk about catching moby dicks little brother.

Our first team of four anglers on the Size Matters boat pikey challenge was team SHADY PINES consisting of Rob, Brain, Tommy and Roy, these lads had a combined age of 528 but they had the stamina of 40 year olds.

We decided to use Milford Haven as our base because the weather forecast was looking good around that area for the first few days.

    Day 1 ,
On the way down to Milford Haven we fished for bait but it was terrible we only caught about 35 Mackerel, every where we stopped the fishing was very poor.

    Day 2,
We went sharking the lads managed 5 Porgies to 227lb and 7 Blues, none of the lads had caught Porgies before and really enjoyed the fight.

    Day 3,
The lads wanted to try some reef fishing, it was very poor only managing 30+ Pollack, Cod, Mackerel, Whiting, Pout, Poor Cod and Launce.

    Day 4,
Weather was terrible so we fished in the Haven for a few hours to try and catch Gilt Head Bream but the conditions where very hard and the lads only managed to catch Ballan Wrasse and Goby’s back in the Marina.

    Day 5,6,7
We got the weather window we had been waiting for to head to Jurassic park to feed our pet Six Gills Sharks.
Lucky enough we managed to buy 50kg of Mackerel from a fish merchant this with the fish we caught reefing was just enough for our session.
We had to steam a very long way from Milford Haven thank god we have a 480 mile range in the fuel tanks.
Only 35 minutes after putting the anchor down we hooked into our first Six Gill Shark, the lads managed to catch 14 Six Gill Sharks in 21 hours with the biggest estimated at 450lb+.
The biggest we measured on the boat was 414lb and when it was in the water it looked 350lb+, the girth of these sharks is massive and that’s what gives them the weight.
It was good to catch a few small ones around 25lb - 35lb to show Jurassic park has a very healthy population of Six Gill Sharks.
    The average size of the Six Gills is very good 450lb+, 440lb+, 414lb, 320lb, 300lb, 295lb, 280lb, 273lb, 250lb, 200lb, 190lb, 130lb, 35lb, 25lb,
The lads also caught Conger, Haddock, Megrim, Blue Whiting, Pout, Poor Cod, Gray Gurnard, Whiting and Ling in between fishing for Six Gills.

    Day 8,
The lads wanted to start catching fish to take so we hit the wrecks on the way back to Pwllheli, we boated over 100 Pollack to 9lb and a few Coalfish to 4lb, it was a busy day for the lads.

    Day 9, 10,
We used our home port of Pwllheli as our base because the lads wanted to sample the excellent inshore fishing on offer, they caught Lots of Bream, Tope, Huss, Bass, Turbot, Cod, Mackerel, Pollack, Weaver and Dogfish.

It had been over two years since we visited Jurassic Park, just after that trip a number of fishing tackle suppliers sent us some samples to use on the Six Gill Sharks but sadly due to covid restrictions we never managed to use the samples until this latest trip.

Peter at Leadertec give us 900lb wire, crimps, Bristo hooks 10/0 and 800lb big game ball bearing swivels.

Stuart at British Big Game Fishing give us 900lb wire hook lengths with 13/0 VMC hooks and his own style of circle hook for Thresher sharks that have worked for Porgies and Blues so far.

Mark at Cox & Rawl give us AFW wire in 600lb crimps, Meat hook extras size 20/0 and all sorts of other bits.

We caught Six Gill Sharks on all of these components so if you are looking to head out in search of a Six Gill Shark then get in contact with these guys and they can all supply you with everything you need, massive thanks to these guys for the samples.

As always we only use the best fishing rods and reels available from our sponsors Shimano UK, here is a list of tackle used on this trip and available on all charters free of charge.

    Reels,
    Talica 50 & 25 2 speeds,
    Tiagra 30 2 speed,
    Speedmaster 16 & 12 2 speeds,
    Torium 20s & 16s,
    Nasci C5000,
    Exage 5000,

    Rods,
    Tyrnos 80lb class,
    Speedmaster Dendou Maru 1000 & 4000,
    Technium Slims 20/30,
    Vengeance Bass 100g,

Please note all sharks boated where kept in excellent condition as you can see by the photos, shark welfare is paramount we use a specialist lifting sling supplied by Sea World in the USA to make sure the sharks are not under any stress while giving the anglers the photo they really want.

    Jul 2021 by Kevin McKie

We have been flat out with charters due to the very good weather conditions during the recent weeks.

Finally we got chance to go sharking for the first time this year, the conditions where very poor for sharking only drifting at 0.5 kts with wind against tide and no wind on both slack waters making it very hard to cover ground with our chum slick.

The lads did manage to catch two Porgies and four Blues, I explained to the lads we will only boat one shark per person per day if they want a photo on the deck.

Wrecking has been incredible in fact I have been saying to the lads this is what you call catching not fishing, 120 to 170 fish in 4 to 5 hours mostly Pollack to 11lb, Cod, Ling and Coalfish.

Most of the lads we have had onboard have all agreed once you fill your cool box with fillets we just head back in, if there is one thing I hate is fish being wasted.

Tope fishing has been hit and miss one day we have caught up to 25 Tope the next day just one or two, the Bream fishing has been excellent when the conditions have been just right up to 120+ per day to 2lb.

Again most of the lads are happy to put the bream under 1lb back and just keep a dozen or so bigger fish.

We where lucky enough to have had the famous Ridge Monkey Fishing Company from Liverpool out filming there new series of challenges around the UK, great bunch of lads and very professional with the film crew, there should be some epic footage of the lads fighting Tope and using a drone on the water line out the back of the boat to get a total different angle on fighting the fish.

Sadly we are fully booked till November in Scotland but don’t forget give Adam Jenkins a call on 07736 678506 his boat is called Western Flyer operating from Shell island, Adam is a good skipper and knows this area like the back of his hand, we have been working together to make sure we both keep our anglers on the fish.

    Jun 2021 by Kevin McKie

The summer fishing from Pwllheli is really starting to kick in now with the arrival of lots of different species.

On the reefs the Black Bream have arrived in big numbers most fish are around 1lb but we have had a few nudging 2lb.

One group of regular Polish anglers from London give me a lesson in Bream fishing, as I seen one of the anglers get his rig out of his box I said to him, you would make a good Christmas tree decorator looking at that rig ha ha, he said just you wait and see, this is how we fish for them on the kings mere reef off Brighton.

Well I sure did get a lesson he was pulling them out, I said to him well done that sure showed me a thing or two, then I took his idea changed the rig slightly to how have fished in Guernsey for bream and it’s a killer, since using it we are catching a hell of a lot more bream and a much better stamp of fish.

The wreck fishing is excellent at the moment and you only need 2 to 3 hours on the wrecks to catch over 100+ Pollack most are 7lb to 8lb with the biggest going 11lb 8oz, we have also had Ling to 6lb, Coalfish to 5lb and just started catching Cod to 4lb 8oz.

Sadly the Tope fishing has dropped away this is due to the amount of fish on the reefs some days we are catching over 15 species per day and could easily get over 20 if we tried.

We have had a cancellation for next week if you would like to join us.

Tuesday 15th 4 places available 12 hour wrecking trip £105 pp or 10 hour Bream trip £85 pp 7am sailing, all depending on the weather.

If you can not make our available date give Adam Jenkins a call on 07736 678506 his boat is called Western Flyer operating from Shell island, Adam is a good skipper and knows this area like the back of his hand, we have been working together to make sure we both keep our anglers on the fish.

    May 2021 by Kevin McKie

The Tope fishing in Cardigan Bay has finally started to come in to its own, our best day so far has seen 49 Tope boated and returned, with most days seeing 15 to 30 Tope per day and this will only get better.

We have been extremely lucky to catch some cracking Tope to say the least, we have been using the shark measurements in inches,
girth x girth x length divided by 800 to calculate the weight of the big females to insure we don’t damage the heavily pregnant Tope.

Already we have been informed we should be weighing them in a cat fish sling like another skipper does on Anglesey.

So we decided to weigh and measure the first eight Tope we caught today and here is the results.

    Measured weight, Actual weight,
    Female 29lb 33lb,
    Female 25.5lb 29lb,
    Male 16.6lb 20lb,
    Female 52.8lb 51lb,
    Male 15.6lb 22lb,
    Male 15.6lb. 26lb,
    Female 16.2lb 19lb,
    Female 27.5lb 34lb,

From now on we will leave it up to the anglers to decide if the want to weigh the fish in our Skate sling, use the shark measurement calculator or simply unhook it at the side of the boat.

The biggest Tope went to Luke Brennan from Preston it was his first ever Tope and measured out at 67lb 8oz it was an incredible fish a real tank.

Andy Finney from Essex caught a monster Tope that measured out at 63lb and was his first ever Tope.

Colin Higham from Preston has been fishing for over 40 years and he caught his biggest Tope it weighed 51lb.

We have also had a few young anglers fishing with us catching there first ever Tope, just listening to them chatting about how good a day they have had gives me jobs satisfaction and why I love what I do.

Big thanks to Holy Mackerel for sending us some oil that we have used in a recent Sea Angler Magazine article that will be out in the near future.

Sadly we are fully booked in Pwllheli for the rest of the year, we do have dates available for Skate fishing in Scotland.

  • 05/2021 Fishing Report by Kevin McKie

    May 2021 by Kevin McKie

Pwllheli marina has done an excellent job dredging the marina and entrance.

We now have 24 hour access to the marina on neap tides and now only restricted to 1.5 hours either side of low water on spring tides.

This now means we can operate even more efficiently with sensible sailing times especially helpful to anglers traveling from far and wide.

The Tope fishing was hard going with only 2 to 6 Tope per day but the last three Tope trips have been good with 41 Tope caught to 46lb and twice as many dropped.

At the moment we are still using frozen mackerel because it seems to be out fishing everything else, the Tope are very finicky when taking the bait making it much harder for anglers to set the hook and keep the line tight at all times.

Thankfully we have caught Tope on everyone of our Tope trips, long my this continue.

The wreck fishing has been amazing in the last few days some anglers are catching a fish every drift mostly Pollack to double figures, with a few Coalfish and odd Ling.

The biggest Pollack was caught by Stuart Pilkington a cracking fish of 15lb 4oz and a new Layland & District fishing club record.

We did have a very poor trip last week we had some guys on from London who wanted to go wrecking, the first wreck had plenty of small Pollack on to 6lb, I decided to try and find a better stamp of fish for the lads, as we went further off shore all the wrecks had fish on but would not feed.

Then I decided to go over 50 miles out to try and find feeding fish, only to come across French and UK war ships with helicopters hunting a submarine on exercise.

I know from fishing out of Plymouth when the Navy use the top secret sonar equipment to hunt submarines the fishing becomes very difficult indeed.

On that day we hardly seen any sea birds, no dolphins or seals that we see every day sailing from Pwllheli.

Sadly we are fully booked in Pwllheli for the rest of the year, we do have dates available for Skate fishing in Scotland.

  • 03/05/2021 Fishing Report by Kevin McKie

3 May 2021 by Kevin McKie

The big Welsh girls have started to arrive in Cardigan bay and we have been catching some big female Tope.

Our biggest Tope was caught by Alan Bates from Manchester, the Tope was heavily pregnant so we decided not to weigh the fish to minimise stress so we measured the girth 31 inch and length (tip of nose to fork or the tail) 55.5 inch puts it at 66lb 6oz and is a new personal best for Alan well done, sorry the photo is not the best but we didn’t want to lift the fish too far off the deck and it was during the night so that doesn’t help to make a good photo.

Other Personal best Tope where caught by
    Paul Williams 50lb 10oz,
    Dave Jones 45lb 8oz,
    Mark Thomas 42lb,
    Robert Bamber 41lb,
    Steve Williams 38lb,
    Alan Jones 34lb,
    Kevin Marples 33lb,

The Tope fishing has been very hit and miss on some days we are catching one or two other days we are catching up to 14, the lack of bait fish means the Tope are always on the move and no area has fished well two days in a row.

This has seen us moving five or six times per day trying to find the Tope, as more bait fish arrive the fishing will get much better and more consistent, from now till the end of June we hope to catch some very big Tope.

We have also started to catch the first Black Bream of the season along with Huss to 12lb, Grater Weaver, Ballan Wrasse, Pollack, Coalfish, Whiting, Scorpion Fish, Dogfish and Thornback Ray.

The wreck fishing has been excellent with our last trip producing 101 Pollack to 9lb 8oz with most of them averaging 5lb to 6lb for Layland SAC.

We have also seen fishing groups making good use of the mini bus return service from Liverpool to Pwllheli supplied by SDH Travel.

Sadly we are fully booked in Pwllheli for the rest of the year, we do have dates available for Skate fishing in Scotland during November, December, January and February.

22 Apr 2021 by Kevin McKie

The Tope fishing from Pwllheli on the bigger tides was looking very promising, on our best day we had Tope of 57lb, 54lb, 51lb and dropped 5 Tope in the first hour.

Then as the tide dropped away it was just Huss and Doggies, when the tide turned we had 2 more Tope of 36lb and 22lb.

As we where weighing the 57lb Tope in the sling the Tope regurgitate it’s stomach so we didn’t both with a photo and got it straight back in the water.

Over the next few days the Tope fishing was very difficult with very small tides, bright sun shine and crystal clear water.

We even tried a night fishing trip with lots of chum because the day before we got bitten off on 250lb mono.

Sadly we only managed the one Tope and Huss to 12lb, thankfully we have caught Tope on all of our Tope trips so far.

We also had our first wrecking trip of the season booked in, its was a 23 hour trip with some of my regulars.

I explained to the lads we mite be too early in the season to have a good day and I had not fish any of the wrecks since the 90s.

The first few wrecks where very poor with just a few small Pollack for our efforts, we decided to steam another hour more and then we hit the honey hole, every drift was 4 to 6 Pollack per drift to 8lb but most where 5lb to 6lb.

The lads stopped on just over 150 Pollack then we decided to try a few more wrecks for Cod or Ling but all we found was small Coalfish and Pollack.

We decided to put the anchor down for the last few hours over slack water with only Coalfish and Pollack for bait, two of the lads got smashed up by big fish on there light gear and they managed to catch Spurdog to 16lb, Huss to 14lb, Tope to 10lb and Doggies.

Not a bad day between just 6 of them, I would of loved to have a load of fresh mackerel at anchor on one of them deep water wrecks,
I think there are a few surprises down there that’s for sure.

  • 04/2021 Fishing Report by Kevin McKie

    Apr 2021 by Kevin McKie

It’s good to finally be back on the tools and behind the helm of Size Matters.

We had our first day on the Tope we managed five Tope to 45lb and dropped four, the bites where very finicky and the water temperature was only 7 degrees.

Rob Lynn had the biggest Tope that was a new personal best for him followed by Bernie Forshaw with a 42lb Tope that was also his personal best.

We also had Huss to 10lb, Whiting, Dabs, Doggies and Poor Cod, I believe if we had fresh Mackerel for bait we would of landed a lot more Tope.

From now till the end of June is normally the best time to catch a giant Tope that Cardigan Bay is famous for, I have personally witnessed fish in-excess of 80lb in years gone by.

If you are booked on a Tope trip with us over the next few months try your best to get fresh mackerel for bait if not frozen will do.
