[This report was written when Size Matters was operating from Plymouth]

We managed to get out yesterday for the first charter of the season from Plymouth,
it was my first day on the new job. It was like being back in school, learning how to fish new marks and getting to know the new boat. There was a group of local lads onboard so the expectations where high, as there was a few fish about according to the lads. As we got to the first mark we where on the last of the ebb tide we only managed a few whiting and pouting to 2lb. Then we moved to another mark, the lads tried some bait but again just whiting and pouting. We moved for the 3rd time, then we hit a few pollack to 10lb. Just as we set up the second drift a pod of dolphins started circling the boat, great to watch but they don't help the fishing. Could this first day get any worse, so off we went again, Then finally we hit a good shoal of fish. The lads where kept very busy till the end of the day, 60+ fish kept.
Ling to 23lb 8oz and Pollack to 15lb 8oz, all the lads onboard enjoyed the day and said to me they would like this type of catch on there next trip. I said if only my job was that easy ha ha.
If you fancy a trip out of Plymouth just give me a call.
Here is a list of the available dates in March.
    Tuesday 22nd,
    Wednesday 23rd,
    Thursday 24th,
I have more dates available in April and May.

    Cheers

Well there she goes, sailing from Liverpool to Brighton with her new owner.
Brigand has served me well over the last 4 years, it was the perfect charter boat to get started with. I must admit it's been hard work and very long hours to build my business but it's all been worth while.
I have met so many good people since I started and most are now good friends, thank you to everyone who helped make Brigand a success.
Now the time has come to take the next step for a bigger, better and faster charter boat. So watch this spaces because SIZE really does MATTER!!

We where back on the Mersey again today with a group of lads from Winsford and they come loaded up with a bag of bananas.
A big no no on most charter boats as they bring bad luck and after the winter we have had we didn't need anymore of that.
The day started of very slow so the blame was on the bananas ha ha (any excuse will do). But as the flood tide kicked in the cod where on the move, best we had was
5lb 8oz, along with plenty of good size whiting and micro cod. Even I had a go and caught a few cod to 4lb, it's very rare I fish when I have a charter as I like to help everyone onboard as much as I can.
Your last chance to fish onboard Brigand is this Friday, I have 7 places available!

    Jan 2016 by Kevin McKie

Over the last week there have been some nice cod getting caught in the Mersey.
The biggest I have heard of is 12lb with a few around 9lb to 10lb. On Brigand we have been catching up to 12 cod per day to 7lb 10oz (most are about 5lb to 6lb), thornback ray to 5lb, whiting to 1lb 8oz and dabs.
On two of the days we fished spring tides, one day we fished a mark about 3 miles from new brighton. We caught hundreds of whiting and dabs along with the odd codling to 3lb, flounder to 1lb 8oz and small thornback rays. On the second day we fished the Mersey mostly targeting the back eddies and marks where we could get out the main tide flow. We caught our biggest cod of the season so far 8lb 12oz, a long with a few more around the 4lb mark. There was still plenty of whiting and dabs to be caught over low water, with one angler catching six dabs on a six hook trace I have never seen that done before.
During February we will be doing a few more charters on spring tides and if the weather is kind we will venture off shore if anglers are willing to give it ago.
Here is a list of available dates during February.

    Monday 1st whole boat available,
    Tuesday 2nd whole boat available,
    Wednesday 3rd 6 places available,
    Thursday 4th 4 places available,
    Friday 5th 1 place available,
    Sunday 7th 5 places available,
    Sunday 14th 7 places available,
    Monday 15th whole boat available,
    Tuesday 16th 8 places available,
    Wednesday 17th whole boat available,
    Thursday 18th 3 places available,

If you would like information or book any of these dates give me a call on 07999628511.

    Cheers

Finally with all the flood water gone and temperature starting to drop we are starting to see the cod fishing on the Mersey improving.
During the last 5 charters we had only one hard day the other days we caught up to 16 coding from 2lb to 8lb per day with most of them around the 5lb mark. We also caught thornback rays to 8lb 12oz, plenty of whiting to 2lb and dabs. A few small boat anglers have been doing well catching cod to 10lb with quite a few around the 8lb mark as well so they are there you just need to fish big baits for them. The way things are going this winter season, it looks like we are just starting to get the main cod run. So I have decided to put a few extra weekend dates
on, the tides are around 29ft to 30ft. This just means we will have to move around the Mersey more often to get out of the main run of tide. As always we just need mother nature on our side, no more heavy rain, no gales from the NW or SE and we should see some very good catches of cod throughout the coming months.
Here is a list of available dates in January,
    Saturday 16th 1 place,
    Sunday 17th 1 place,
    Monday 18th 1 place,
    Friday 22nd whole boat available,
    Saturday 23rd 3 places,
    Sunday 24th whole boat available,
    Sunday 31st 2 places available,

If you would like to book any of these dates just give me a call on 07999628511.

    Cheers
