    Report on-board Flamer IV

    Again not many trips due to the bad weather. The inshore fishing on the reefs and banks was very good with plenty of Rays,Congers,Bull Huss,Whiting,Smooth Hounds etc The bad weather and dirty water put pay to the wrecking ,which was a shame because this is normaly the time for big pollack,so hopefully we will get at them in March.17 different species caught on Flamer III so far in 2007.Gary Mackenzie caught a superb specimen Undulate Ray weighing 16Ib 4oz. But Flamer Fish of the Month is awarded to with a weighing which is only a pound under the British Record.

    The Kidney bank produced Blonde Rays. On the Reefs Conger,Bull Huss,Whiting,Smooth hounds,Spurdogs and Undulate rays were caught along with a very early Black Bream.Ballan Wrasse up to 4Ib 8oz around Portland Bill. Turbot and Plaice on the Shambles Bank, a 13Ib Turbot going to Gary Humber and the best Plaice in March weighed 4Ib 14oz and was caught by Barry Attfield.
    Species count now stands at 25. March Flamer Fish of the Month a 15Ib Bull Huss caught by Eddy Dart.

    April was a superb month for the flatties with lots of good size Plaice and Turbot being caught.The reefs produced Rays,Bull Huss,Smooth Hound,Congers,Bream etc The Flamer 2008 species count now stands at 35 different species. The April Flamer Fish of the Month had lots of entries including an 18Ib Blonde Ray several Plaice up to 5Ib 8oz and a Turbot weighing 24Ib 8oz. But even these entries were eclipsed by the 28Ib Turbot caught by Kim Mace while drifting the famous Shambles Bank and is named April's winner.

    The weather was certainly unsettled for most of the month. However a wonderful week with glorious sunshine was had on my first 5 day West Country Trip of the year. 24 different species were caught ,Tope, Spurdog, Smooth hound, Conger, Bull Huss, Gurnards, Whiting, Garfish, Pollack etc along with plenty of Plaice. The offshore wrecking produced Bass, Pollack, Cod and Ling. The reefs were good for Tope, Bull Huss, Congers and Bream. A session on the Kidney bank produced 8 Blonde rays including 15Ib,18Ib,22Ib and 24Ib rays. Plaice were still being caught on the mussel beds and Turbot on the Shambles bank. Species Count is 40 so far in 2007. Flamer Fish of the Month for May was awarded to Leo Toms who caught a 50Ib Tope. The Tope was returned alive.

    June threw up some very un seasonal weather but despite this some good fish were caught when the weather allowed. The reefs produced some good catches of black bream,tope,bull huss,congers,cod and undulate and thornback rays. Mark Sargeant caught an amazing ray double landing a 15Ib female Undulate ray and then five minutes later landed a 15Ib 8oz male Undulate ray.James Mccarthy landed a 13Ib Thornback ray.The Kidney bank was consistant for 20Ib plus blonde rays,like the 22 pounder Aiofe Dillon caught on her first boat fishing trip. The Shambles Bank produced a few Turbot and Brill. Plaice were caught on the mussel beds in particular on one trip that produced 14 in total with nearly all the plaice weighing over 4Ib and the best one of 5Ib 4oz caught by John Hayes.The offshore wrecks were good for pollack,cod,bass and a few ling.The Flamer 2007 species count is now 45. June Flamer Fish of the Month was awarded to Paul Lawson for his personal best 9Ib Bass catch.

    Again very unseasonal weather forced plenty of cancellations of trips but when we did get out the fishing was very good.Good fishing on the reefs for Black Bream,Bull Huss,Congers,Tope,Rays and the occassional Cod.This year has been prolific for the amount of Undulate rays caught on a variety of marks. The offshore wrecks produced Pollack,Ling,Cod and Bass. A steady run of Brill and Turbot on the famous Shambles Bank. The Plaice fishing on the mussel beds just keeps on going with plenty being caught and up to 5Ib plus,perhaps the way the weather is the Plaice still think it's Spring. The 2007 Flamer species now stands at 50 , including a Connemarra Sucker a first for/on Flamer.

    Plenty of Black Bream in the 2 to 4Ib range along with two 5 pounders being caught, the bream were caught on the reefs ,wrecks and mussel beds. Bull Huss,Congers,Rays,Tope from marks to the west and east of the port. On the small tides,anchoring wrecks produced plenty of conger action along with ling and the occassinal cod.Bass from the Portland race area,although the best Bass weighing 11Ib came from a reef and was caught by Robin Amor.Turbot and Brill on the Shambles Bank. Plaice were still being caught on the mussel beds with quie a few 4 to 5 pound fish. Undulate rays have been prolific this year and in August there quite a few 15 pounders caught along with a 16Ib one caught by Ted Scorer. Flamer Fish of the Month for August is awarded to David Trevarthen for his 5Ib 14oz plaice.

    September was a good month with plenty being caught. Plaice and Black Bream on the mussel beds. Some good Conger and Ling fishing on sessions at anchor on wrecks. The reefs were good for Conger, Bull huss , Bream and undulate Rays. Turbot and brill from the shambles bank. Bass from the portland race area. The european championships were fished and a good time was had by all with some excellent fishing taking place. The N.F.S.A. wessex champion of champions competition was also fished,with Flamer III winning the top boat prize. The kidney bank was good for Blonde Rays. September flamer fish of the month is awarded to Peter Bradley for his 23Ib Blonde Ray. The flamer 2007 species count now stands at 54 which includes a rare coalfish which we hardly ever see these days.

    Plaice were still being caught on the mussel beds. Plenty of Black Bream with the biggest weighging 4Ib 12oz, and Bass from the portland race area.. Pollack up to 15Ib and Bass up to 9Ib on some of the wrecks. Turbot and Brill from the Shambles Bank. Huss,Conger,Bream,Cod on the many reefs. Lots of different species including one trip were 8 red band fish were caught during a species comp. Species count for 2007 now 58. Good ray fishing from the Kidney Bank including a 19Ib 8oz Undulate Ray caught by Garry Doyley which is Flamer Fish of the Month for October. NOTE - BOOK NOW FOR 2008

    During November the fishing was good when the weather allowed. Black bream were still being caught through to the middle of the month. The Kidney bank produced some good blonde rays with the biggest weighing 27Ib 5oz.The whiting began to show in numbers towards the end of November.The reefs produced Conger, Cod, and Bull Huss.Wayne Frapple landing a 14Ib Bull Huss.A few Turbot and Brill from the Shambles Bsnk. Still plenty of different species being caught. The Flamer count for 2007 now stands at 60. An offshore wreck trip produced Pollack and Bass. Two big Pollack were caught a 17Ib 8oz and a 18Ib 8oz. Flamer Fish of the Month for November is awarded to John Crotty with his 18Ib 8oz Pollack. BOOK NOW FOR 2008.
