    May Delights !

Although the weather has been `changeable`, we have still found some great fish lately.

May was a great success even though we had strong North Easterly winds, The rest of the portrush Charter Boats stayed in port for practically the full month but we saw the opportunity for some great fishing and it paid off-
we caught a beautiful 19 lb Bull Huss from Culdaff Bay, along with loads Spurdogs all 6- 14.5lb, some codling and a nice blonde ray!

Our evening mackerel trips over the month of may were productive, great to see lots enthusiastic novice anglers entering our sport!

On the odd days when it has been calm enough to push offshore we have had great results, our wrecking trips produced Quality fish, mainly pollock with a few ling and swarms of coalie

    No bullshit, Just results.

    Report on-board Seren y Mor

Seren y Mor is now back in the water fishing after an engine refit over the winter. The May weed is now showing signs of clearing here and on Sunday we had our first good catch of Mackerel. The Smoothounds are now present in good numbers and the Tope are due at anytime.

    Report on-board Gwen-Paul-M

    May 30th 2012.

At last, more than a week of largely settled weather, with only one hiccup really, last Saturday when an easterly blow curtailed any thoughts of venturing out. We've had a few angling trips and potting days. Mackerel are still very patchy, although we did have a couple of dozen on Sunday. The normal May algal bloom has been at its height the last couple of weeks which affects the fishing adversely, notably inshore. The algal bloom happens every year and is vital for the sustainability of the whole marine ecosystem. Most species time their spawnings with the algal bloom, which provides the lowest link in the marine food chain. So even though fishing can be difficult during the bloom it is of benefit to us for the rest of the year.

There are plenty of small whiting and dabs inshore, with an odd small codling and tub gurnard mixed in. The odd bull huss, ray and plenty of dogfish too.

The water is far clearer and free of algae offshore and a trip to the offshore wrecks today resulted in a great day's fishing with cod, pollack and coalfish. The best cod was about 6lb, pollack 7lb and coalfish 4lb. Fishing very steady on the ebb tide but unfortunately the fish went off the feed on the flood. Its the most cod I have seen for a few years, we must have had 30 or 40. Weather was good too, flat calm all day.

The algae will decline over the next couple of weeks and hopefully the mackerel will turn up in numbers. Once that happens fishing over the whole spectrum should improve. Over the last few years we have had a good run of inshore Tope from about the third week in June onwards, for around three weeks. Hopefully it occurs again this year as the best tope we had last year was 44lb.

We have room on various trips at the moment including an offshore wrecking trip on the 13th June with a similar itinerary to today. They are all listed in the trips update page on my website www.sea-fishing-trips.co.uk

  • 30/05/2012 Fishing Report by Scott Belbin on Galloper (Brightlingsea, Essex)

30 May 2012 by Scott Belbin

    Report on-board Galloper

I know its been a while since my last report on CBUK so I thought I’d best put one in while I have the time. The fishing has been good around Mersea this year with January being one of the best months for cod which surprised many of our anglers as January has a bit of a bad name at times. the fishing continued through February and as we went into march and the sprats moved off we had expected a bumper spring run of cod. however as so often with fishing it surprised us again with a mass of herring moving in through out the east coast. The fish were so thick that they were even giving us false bites as they hit the lines. Most of the cod seemed to be up in the water chasing the herring but thankfully we could still find good numbers of thornbacks in places and it wasn’t too long before the herring started to thin out. Once they left the cod came back on the chew and we are still seeing the odd one mixed in even now. the thornbacks are still showing in steady numbers with an average of 15-30 a day if you target them.
We have had the odd day after bass and seen a few nice fish to boot. There aren’t many anglers who can catch a bass without raising a smile. There’s even been the odd sole mixed in amongst them again with a nice fish of 1.12lbs falling to one of our regulars Steve.
Coming right up to date and last weekend produced some nice fishing. We had a stag party aboard Saturday and the lads behaviour was faultless saving the drinking until the evening so they could enjoy their day afloat. They opted for a late start which is unusual for me but makes no difference. We left at 11.30 and just a short ride out and we were on the thornbacks. We fished until just gone three and I was kept busy casting and re-baiting for them between netting, unhooking and making the odd cup of tea too. Needless to say the trip flew by and they were more than happy with 16 thornbacks and two dogfish.
The next day saw me with a party who jump aboard a couple of times a year. The lads had booked a drifting trip which I do every now and then and by some miracle the conditions were near perfect. A couple of the lads had never caught plaice before nor bad they drift fished so it was a new experience for them. We didn’t fill up but everybody caught plaice and all seemed happy with the 10 we had between the 6 lads. The first couple were only about 5-6inches ling but the rest were a nicer size with the biggest 1.9lbs for Neil. We also saw a couple of launce ,several weavers, a nice dab loads of doggies and a bass. It was nice for me as well as them to be doing something a bit different.
Over the next couple of weeks we will see the first of the tope coming out and hopefully some better numbers of bass too. I keep my last minute bookings and available dates as up-to-date as I can so feel free to take your pick out of them. I will try not to leave it to long before the next report but n the mean time keep an eye on the news page on my website as I update it with reports each week. • 29/05/2012 Fishing Report by Steve Coe on Mistress (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

29 May 2012 by Steve Coe

    Report on-board Mistress

My wife, eldest son and myself have just had two fabulous days fishing with Rich and Dean on Mistress at Whitby. I cannot reccommend this outfit highly enough. Rich was constantly working hard to find us fish on different marks, Dean was working tirelessly netting fish, sorting out tangles and giving encouragement to everone aboard, always with a smile on his face and a kind word. We have fished on many charter boats in the area and this team and boat is by far the most professional, committed, helpful and friendly we have come across. My wife took a personal best pollock of around 6lbs and I had a personal best ling and cod of 13lbs and 9.5lbs respectively. The lads shared their knowledge and experience with us regarding fishing with sidewinders and bait. We returned home with loads of cod, ling and pollock fillets all nicely filleted by the lads. If you want a great days fishing off Whitby on a superb boat with a totally committed crew then dont look any further than Rich and Dean on Mistress. We shall be booking again once we can find some space in the freezer!!!!! Thanks again guys, Steve, Chris and Rick from Doncaster.

    Report on-board Bessie Vee

    Cod fishing in the Western Channel;
After switching last year to Red Gill's new Evolution lures with great success, I re-ordered some new ones for this season. In addition to the usual colours, I ordered a few packs of White Red Mega Vibe Red Gills, which, on the last few trips have proven to out-fish anything else two to one!
Ian tried them today for the first time, and landed three cod before any of the other anglers, using other lures, had one on their rods.
I would highly recommend trying these out if you want to catch cod!
