    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

Two day report on the Shy-Torque III.

Thursday didn’t fish very well at all for the guys on the boat in all honesty.

We re-ran our route we took the day before, as we’d had such a great day, but sadly the little buggers weren’t playing for us.
We finished Thursday’s trip off on a little wreck just 2.3 miles from shore and had our best fishing there to be fair.
We did only take 8 Codling from it but considering what we had before this, it was good!!

Yesterday I chose to run back in the direction we’d finished off the day before and wreck hopped for the first couple of hours.

On the first bit of scrap, I went straight into a fish on the shad and two other lads hooked up straight away too.
20 winds off the bottom and a seal grabbed my fish, taking it clean off the hook in one.
10 seconds after this, Graham Soloman’s fish was attacked by the beastie and his came up with just a head and entrails!

    Moving on then!!

The next wreck was just 3/4 mile away to the North.
    First drift, one fish boated.
Second drift, 2 fish on and both pinched by a seal!!
Long story short, the same f*****g seal followed us for 2 hours and killed our morning!

I moved the boat to a completely different sector to get away from it, hoping to find a seal free area and luckily for us we managed to find a few nice fish on a strip of ground with no seal harassment.

The lads plucked away nicely for a couple of hours and ended up with some nice Codling to just under 9lb and Ling to just over 10lb.
Around 30 fish from that ground making for an enjoyable bit of fishing to save the day.

A great mixed group of lads who were pleased with the day in the end.
    See you again soon lads.

    Cheers for now,
    Rich

It's not all about the bass! There are still a few thornback ray showing along with the bass, smooth hounds, dogfish, whiting and dabs ect. They might not be as numerous as a few years ago but the other day we had 8 rays as well as 25-30 hounds and over 50 bass. There were several other species caught including the first tope of the year for us.
I have spaces aboard Galloper from this weekend onwards for individuals and groups.

  • 16/05/2024 Fishing Report by Andy Savage on Sea Urchin IIl (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

16 May 2024 by Andy Savage

    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

It’s fair to say, that today was the most productive day we’ve had this year! Mark Johnson, Bob Nicholls and Jeff Hoggard had the boat booked for themselves and are great anglers and always fantastic company.

Having looked at the forecast the day before, it appeared that the Northerly wind would begin to lift a bit, late morning which could make for difficult fishing conditions. The lads were all happy to get away early and make the most of the favourable early morning conditions. We departed shortly after 0400hrs just as first light broke, and ran 90 minutes North across a flat, glassy sea…..it was a stunning morning. However, it turned out to be short lived as we ran into a fog bank after 7 miles and spent the rest of the day on the radar!!

On arrival at the first wreck there were feedmarks everywhere; I’ve never seen that wreck “lit up” so much. I set up the first drift and with the small tide and no wind, we barely moved. Within a minute the rods were buckled over and we had a great three hour stint, clumping plenty of fish. The first half prior to slack water, we had mainly Codling, but a good stamp; with Bob taking the biggest at 8lb and Jeff chipping in with a couple of 7’s along with plenty in the 4-5lb class.

As we lost the Ebb Tide, the Ling came on the feed and we had a number of fish in the 6-8lb range, then Jeff took the biggest of the day at a very honest 9lb 15oz winning the “Greatest Angler Trophy” that they always fish for.
Muppet bait traces with Squid or Mackerel dominated, but Bob also did well on a set of Gummimacks.

We chose to run to another wreck six miles away to finish off the day. The wind had just begun to lift a notch as we arrived, but pleasingly all three rods went in again on the first drift. It fished well for about 45 minutes with a nice mix of Codling and Ling and a couple of Pollock, then gradually as the wind increased and the lines started streaming, sport slowed right down. We took only five fish in the last 45 minutes before calling it a day at 1130hrs and steaming back to Whitby.

A fantastic day out, with great fishing and great company….see you in July lads.

  • 15/05/2024 Fishing Report by Rich Ward on Shy-Torque III (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

15 May 2024 by Rich Ward

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

    15.05.24.

Small tides, a flat calm sea and a good bunch of lads on board.
Surely the perfect recipe for a perfect day on the water?

We sailed at the usual time of 7.0.am yesterday and decided to head to the 5 mile area to start on a couple of bits of scrap, basically to see if there had been any change in the fishing from last time we tried there.

The first few drifts saw both Codling and Ling coming on board steadily which was great!
All the fish were coming up on the baited rigs. Hokkais and baited muppets tipped with squid doing the job.

I was determined to get them on the Shads but sadly to no avail.
A few tugs but nothing definite.
I was guessing that the water was still too murky there.

We moved just 1.5 miles down to the South next and tried a tiny piece of wreckage which I have, that is rarely fished.

I persevered with the Shad and bingo, they were taking fair and square on that one.
This got me thinking that maybe there was patchy bloom in the water.

When we’d picked that bit clean, we moved out over slack water to try some strips of ground and it was alive!

Feed fish all over the grounds and plenty of fish on the feed too!

I reckon that for the last 20 or so drifts over a small ledge, I personally managed at least 1 Cod each go on the Shad! Brilliant sport.

Regular angler on the Shy-Torque III Chris Siddle, showed his skills off to everyone today and managed to fill his box (6 stone) to the brim. He took all his fish on the baited rigs.
Chris also took the best 2 fish on board too
A couple of lovely chunky Cod around the 8 lb mark.

It has to be the best day on the inshore marks for us this year with a tally of close on 80 fish boated.
Plenty to keep Fergus entertained with his sharp knife!

The Cod are in and feeding lads!!

    Cheers
    Rich.

  • 15/05/2024 Fishing Report by Andy Savage on Sea Urchin IIl (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

15 May 2024 by Andy Savage

    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

After a long weekend off with pesky South Easterly winds, today we had a nice settled day with a small neap tide. With a group of my regular experienced anglers aboard, I knew we’d have a good day before I even cast off from the pontoon. Everyone was on early, so we got away just after 0600hrs using the last of the Ebb and ran North to have a go on a few of the inshore wrecks, as there are signs that the water is beginning to clear out nicely.

First stop there wasn’t much tide, but we had half a dozen drifts and picked up a couple of fish each drift. Ian Kellock took the best Codling at just over 5lb. We pushed on after 45 minutes or so and tried a couple of small wrecks, for very little return. The drift line of the boat had us running straight out to sea, which I don’t think is the best as we were crossing the small wrecks, as opposed to running along them. I moved us to a bigger wreck to give us more time on the drift and that worked quite well.

We spent the next couple of hours picking away nicely. We caught plenty on squid baited muppet traces, but we also had a good return on the shads. Just as I was about to move on Charlie Hewitt connected with something a bit better and without incident, he brought up a nice Ling just short of 11lb. We fished a further three wrecks for the day which all produced fish, it was just a lovely day out.

Sean O Brien hadn’t done much Shad Fishing before, but was keen to have a go and I think he did a great job, catching regularly throughout the day. The lads christened him “Sean the Shad” which made me chuckle.
Everyone got a fair few fish today, but considering their experience and the small wrecking tide, it didn’t surprise me at all.

There was a lot of mickey taking and great banter all day. One of my most entertaining and enjoyable of the year. Thanks lads.
