Charter Boat: Deep Blue
Boat and Skipper Details
The name 'Deep Blue' comes with an incredible reputation on the south coast. My first boat, an Evolution 38 was originally an Eastbourne boat but was sold a few years ago and was sent to Wales. I have had the privilege of bringing her back to the South East. Deep Blue V1 has now been replaced with a catamaran which has been christened with the same name.
Deep Blue is now one of the approved charter boats for the annual Species League competition.
Fishing trips from Sovereign harbour include reef, rough ground and deep sea wrecking.
We have been provided with brand new top of the range rod and reel setups from Penn Fishing. This equipment is available to use onboard, please ask the skipper about availability.
We are also sponsored by Sidewinder Lures and an ambassador for NAVIONICS. We have a great selection of lures available to use while on your trip.

I'm Simon, owner and skipper of Deep Blue. Originally from Newcastle Upon Tyne, I spent nearly twenty years working in Oxford before relocating to Eastbourne in the summer of 2021. Fishing has been always been a big part of my life. My Grandad and my Dad were both real keen fishermen. My Grandad was also a rod builder, and I loved spending hours in the summer holidays as a kid watching him in his workshop.
I left my career in Mechanical Engineering to take up a life on the waves.
I moonlight as a wedding/event photographer. I am an experienced videographer and drone pilot. I was trained to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) standard to fly drones commercially, and held a PFCO for a number of years.
I hold a valid commercial endorsement from the RYA to skipper chartered motor boats up to 24m in length.

Had a great day out with Simon the skipper. A lovely group of 6 and it was hard fishing but Simon took us to some marks and we all caught. Dogfish, whiting, wrasse, pollock. Very knowledgeable. Lovely boat. Will be back again very soon

Had a great day out on Deep Blue
Despite difficult conditions with big tides Simon worked hard to find the 6 on board fish.
All caught fish with a mixed bag of dogfish, whiting, pollack, wrasse and pouting caught.
Will definitely be booking for another trip soon

Fishing Report by Simon Logan
18 Apr 2025 by Simon Logan
Good Friday 18th April.
Full crew onboard with a less than good forecast.
The crew was briefed yesterday about the forecast, and they all opted to go for it regardless.
A little bit scratchy, but to be expected given the conditions. Lots of algae bloom in the water on the flood tide.
17 small smoothies, few bass, wrasse, pollack and bits…. -

Thursday 17th April.
Chasing fish tails, and our own tails today.
Very scratchy out there this last couple of trips. Lots of algae bloom in the water on the flood tide after yesterday’s wind. The ebb tide cleared it up a bit. The dredger has also just been, and they have permission to dump their spoil a measly mile away uptide of the marina, which makes the water muddy.
Fish very scattered around, tons of marks on the sounder, but again being finicky on the bite. A few nice fish dropped. No big girl smoothies yet still, but several smaller ones. There’s not even that many pouting out there, not that I would usually complain about that, but it’s just bloody weird.
Best fish of the day had be Becky’s micro Codling
Off out again tomorrow, before the wind comes back and spoils Saturday and Easter Sunday .
12 species landed today. -

15 Apr 2025 by Simon Logan
Tuesday 15th April.
A swing in the weather again….. it’s day on, day off at the moment.
7 crew out on the reefs all day.
Yesterday was a bit more challenging than the trip before, today was more challenging than yesterday. Tides falling but still making the drifts a bit swift.
Quite a few snags from the chaps, some of whom have had a bit of a fishing hiatus. Blowing the cobwebs off today was a little bit of a baptism of fire - for some.
Fish all over the shop again, but they were being a bit finicky. -

Monday 14th April
A full crew mixed session.
Bassing in the morning, smoothie hunting at lunch and the some drifting on the reefs.
Plenty of bass, with lots returned. More than half a dozen small smoothies in a quick hour at anchor. Several codling, a single keeper pollack (weird, they were hard to come by today), a few mackerel and a smattering of wrasse on the drift for the last bit of the day.
Plenty of fish to keep the crew interested. -

Fishing Report by Simon Logan
12 Apr 2025 by Simon Logan
Saturday 12th April.
A bit of a different day compared to yesterday, with a lot more fish on the sounder than we managed to tempt onto our hooks, but it was still fishy.
Rough af to start, one poor chap being poorly ALL day. Fine to finish.
A change of wind direction has a lot to do with how these scaled foes act .
Easterly winds pose a challenge, often pushing fish deeper and making them less active, which requires you to adjust your tactics and target slightly deeper waters. The more experienced angler will always manage to pick fish up, but less experienced rods often find it difficult.
Despite this, some persistence pays off, and we returned to shore with a half decent catch, plenty of stories, and smiles all round.
