With the easterly wind curtailing our efforts to get offshore the other day we stayed inshore and went in search of some dabs.
After mark started us off with a couple of pouting our first dabs came aboard.
Tom managed to find a bass which was only just bigger than his hook! However it was nice to see something different.
The lads had fairly large hooks on to start with but we downsized them as the day progressed and caught more as a result.
There weren't many whiting about compared to before Christmas as is to be expected this time of year but we had a few small ones once the tide. We even managed a couple of dogfish too which Steve was very pleased with!!
There were a few nice eating size dabs among them and so we kept a few for the pot. Stanley was desperate to catch a couple of dabs for himself and Douglas for dinner. He had a few throughout the day and we kept a couple which he ate the next night and is already asking to catch some more.
I know dabs aren't everybody's cup of tea but we had a pleasant day with a few fish to boot. If you just want to get out fishing soon then please get in touch.
I have spaces inshore and offshore in the coming weeks.

It was great to be at sea again the other day. We grabbed a weather window and took the Galloper out on our first trip of the year. We might have been a bit rusty after the last couple of months but the lads fished hard and managed to find plenty of dogfish to keep them busy. Winter smooth hounds are still a novelty but always welcome. This one put a decent bend in Stephen Clarks rod and Steve hill was pleased with a thornback ray on his first cast. Unfortunately they are all too rare nowadays.
I have spaces this week aboard Galloper from brightlingsea Essex. Call me anytime for full boat bookings or individual spaces.

Sorry I've been quiet for a while. It's been a busy few weeks cracking on with maintenance on the Galloper. She's going back in Wednesday and our first trip is Saturday.
Although it feels like ages it wasn't that long since our last trips when we found some nice fishing for the time of year.
Nowadays I expect to catch hounds year round and sure enough there were a few to be had among the dogfish.
They weren't giants but big enough to put a bend your rods and the lads managed 10-15 during the course of the day. We saw a few pouting and whiting and a few bonus spurs to finish off with. Alex was very pleased with his new pb dogfish as well! I've seen smaller Alex so there's room for improvement.
I have spaces come up for this Saturday aboard Galloper aboard Galloper from brightlingsea Essex. I know some of you are itching to get out again so please get in touch on 07956411528

23 Dec 2024 by Scott Belbin

It looks like we could have a weather window after Christmas so I'm arranging a couple of trips. Hopefully we can get offshore for the chance of some mixed fishing one day and find some fish closer to home on another more relaxing day. I have availability for full boat bookings if anyone wants exclusive hire for fishing trips or even just if you want a boat ride with the family for a few hours.
The weather has stopped our last few trips but before that there were loads of fish showing from the last of the bass and hounds through to whiting, dogfish, rays and even conger.
Have a lovely Christmas and hopefully I'll see some of you on the other side.

Obviously the weather has curtailed some of our plans lately but we have managed to get out here and there. Steve canham had our biggest conger so far from brightlingsea the other day and it was nice to break into double figures as well as catching it intentionally too (something I never expected to say).
We had half a day for bass with Jons group the other day and although the size and numbers are down it was great to have fresh bass for dinner in December and there were plenty of bites. We missed lots but I had 7 bass in 3 hours fishing. John managed one or two small hounds and we had dogfish and whiting before heading inshore to have a relaxing end to the day. There's loads of life there and we added dabs and pouting to the species count.
It looks like the weather will be on its toes later this week and I have spaces for groups and individuals both days this weekend. Please contact me on 07956411528 if you want to get out.

There's still loads of life inshore at the moment. Stacks of whiting queuing up for our baits as well as dogfish, pouting, some nice dabs and even a couple of small bass. If you want a comfy day out catching plenty of fish then it's hard to beat the blackwater estuary at the moment.
If the weather permits then we can head offshore and target other stuff. It can be hit and miss but if you want something different and the chance of a better fish then I love trying for something different.
I have spaces this weekend both inshore and offshore weather permitting.

It's that time of year when the we start targeting the dabs again. Numbers have been great so far. The lads had some nice ones last week as well as good numbers. They might not make the reels scream but they can keep those rods rattling along with the whiting and dogfish. Barrie had the biggest one his trip but numbers were better for Stephen Clark and the lads. He soon turned treble shots of whiting into treble shots of dabs (though it took nearly 2 hours before he managed a treble of dabs). Numbers were steady throughout the tide and god knows how many the lads had by the end of the day. Clarky fished hard and the most as a result.
This may not be the most extreme fishing but it's a pleasant way to spend the day catching loads of fish and even taking a few for the table too. I know several of you enjoy a day on the dabs and we will be offering these trips for the next couple of months. Please let me know if you want to join us.

Managed to sneak out with Jons group the other day. It was back on the bait fishing for bass and although conditions were far from perfect we managed some nice fish. Jon was top rod with 10-15 bass (I didn't keep count) and the biggest one going over 4lb. We had whiting, hounds and dogfish too. Hopefully we can manage a few more days on the bass before the weather turns too much they go.
I have spaces this weekend and midweek next week if you are interested.

15 Nov 2024 by Scott Belbin

Still steady numbers of bass coming out lately. We were on the lures and the fish were there but the lads had to work for them. Stephen Clarke couldn't put a foot wrong and caught far more than his fair share. There's not always rhyme or reason to why one rod outfishes the other. that was certainly the case as the fish trashed Stephens lures and he was forced to change from one colour or type of lure to another.
We had a move later in the day where Steve canham picked up the best fish of the day.
It wasn't all bass and over the course of a few trips we saw mackerel, pouting, gurnard, weavers and even plaice mixed in our catches.
For the bass fishing we are back on the bait fishing for a bit and hopefully the weather permits us to get out and enjoy the last few weeks of the season before the cold sets in.

Young Stanley has been out slaying the bass with us again. I think he was even top rod the other day. Its always great spending time with him and even better that he's so keen on catching fish.
He did let the lads catch a few bass too and of course there's still been plenty out there to catch of late. Hopefully it doesn't go too cold and we should keep getting them until the end of the month at least. Inshore there's loads of life too. Mostly whiting and dogfish and apparently heaps of dabs.
I've got spaces this coming Sunday and Monday currently. Possibly offshore Sunday if weather permits.
