First day of the season back on the anchor chasing Conger and Ling. The plan was to fish the first 3 hours on the anchor then go on the drift for Pollack.
7 lads onboard who booked the whole boat, most of them had never see a conger let along caught one.
After about 20 minutes of the baits hitting the sea bed, the rods where bent over with conger and Ling hooked up. One angler Chris landed a cracking Conger of just over 80lb and it was his first time Conger fishing, followed by Colin with a nice fish of 60lb, most of the Conger where 20lb to 40lb. Best Ling tipped the scales at 19lb and on the drift there was plenty of Pollack to 8lb. Now we have set the standard for our Conger fishing this year, last year our best Conger was 86lb and this year I would love to get one over the magical 100lb mark.

The summer has finally arrived here in Plymouth, the weather is starting to settle and the fishing is as good as it gets.
Our Best day so far has been 81 Pollack to 15lb and 10 Ling to 20lb, most days we are catching 50 plus Pollack and Ling a trip.
Best Pollack so far tipped the scales at 17lb 5oz with very good numbers of double figure fish showing too. As for the Ling, most are 15lb to 20lb. We have also had the odd Cod to 6lb and Coalfish to 4lb. This time last year we where catching Cod to 17lb and in good numbers, this year they seem to be a bit late arriving.
We will start to put the anchor down starting from tomorrow, this should result in us catching some very big Ling and Conger.

At the start of May the weather was not the best and this resulted in us losing 8 charters in a row including our first 4 day Guernsey trip of the year. When we did manage to get out we have been on the fish, catching Ling to 20lb, Pollack to 15lb, odd Cod to 5lb and Whiting to 3lb. Fished with Roger Eaton on Blue Fin this year as I enjoyed the experience so much last year , 3 people fished this year including Ken who is 80 years old with Rogers help and assistance he managed a 168lbs skate we had a total of 17 skate best 199lbs over a 3 day period for a total weight of 1971lbs Thank you Roger for a brilliant experience and would recommend Blue Fin charter to anyone who loves fishing.

Size Matters is now back in the water after having her yearly scrub, anti foul, polish, two coats of wax and some new electronic toys added to her for this season.
Big thank you to everyone who give me a hand to get her finished with in a week, it's no easy task on a big boat like this!
We are now fast approaching the busiest time of year, from now till mid October we have over 150 days booked for charters. All we need is good weather and we will put our lads on the fish as we do time and time again. Here are the last available dates for this coming season onboard Size Matters from Plymouth.
I have 3 places available on a Guernsey trip, May 1st to May 4th, £400 per person this includes all bait, tackle, ice and all fish filleted.

The fishing from Plymouth has been steady for this time of year. On the mid channel wrecks we have been catching Ling to 23lb, Pollack to 10lb, and a few small conger to 20lb all on the drift. Inshore on the reefs we have been catching Ling to 15lb, Pollack to 8lb, Whiting to 3lb and the odd Cod to 5lb. A very good sign is there is plenty of Lance, Herring and Mackerel around at the moment, last year it wasn't until June before we seen the first mackerel caught.
On Monday we decided to have a go at the rays on the skerries for a change we caught blond, small eyed and spotted, 12 rays to 18lb in total all returned to fight another day.

Well it's good to be back in Plymouth for the summer season! We have been wrecking for the last few days catching 30 to 40 Pollack and Ling per day. Best Ling was 27lb caught by Tony McDowell from Preston, he has fished with me on the Mersey and fancied a wrecking trip from Plymouth. He had never caught a Ling before and at the start of the trip he said I would love to catch a big Ling. I said to him when the tide is just right use one of my Ling rigs and you might just get one. He listed to my advice and reaped the rewards, well done Tony.
Most of the Pollack are 6lb to 8lb with a few doubles caught each day. This is the time of year where the winter fish have spawned and the summer fish are starting to arrive.
There is a few herring and mackerel about and we caught our first Conger on the drift while fishing for Ling. This is a very good sign and if I get enough interest we will start fishing for Conger in May, also over the next few weeks the Cod will start to show in good numbers!

On April 1st we will be starting our charter season from Plymouth, if you would like to have a realistic chance at catching big Sharks, Conger, Ling, Cod, Pollack, plus many more. A new season ahead.
The boat is coming on with most of the winter refit completed. Lots of work has been done but I won’t bore you with that here and will instead talk about fishing as I am looking forward to the start of a new season.
Last year the fishing proved to be a very good with some of the best skate fishing so far. Several fish topped the magic 200lb mark with plenty in the high hundreds. I will admit though that there were a few days when the fish were not interested but that’s fishing for you!
The general fishing in Loch Etive also had its moments with some very good days, even had a tadpole fish! It was a first for this boat but I expect we will see another at some point.
For 2017 I have treated the boat to a complete new set of rods and reels. The old 6/0 114H Penn reels have done their time and have been replaced with modern 2 speed reels. Also the Penn Ally rods that were showing signs of wear have been upgraded. The general fishing gear has also been upgraded with new tackle, so we will be starting the season with all new Penn tackle. All this is with grateful thanks to Pure Fishing UK Ltd.
The bookings are starting to roll in, with more so far than this time last year, so perhaps a good idea to make your booking now rather than risk disappointment later on.
With the hope of a good weather ahead I’ll sign off for now and wish you all good fishing for 2017.
