Wednesday 10th August was down as a Ray day out on Flamer 4, the initial plan was to head for the Kidney Banks for some Blonde Ray fishing but with a forecast giving 23mph winds by midday Colin decided that it might just be a bit to frolicsome to fish and decided to head for a different mark were he promised Undulate Ray. The previous day we had been wrecking for Cod, Conger and Ling – well we had the Cod, we had the Conger but no Ling, yes we had Pollock and Bass but that didn’t stop us giving Colin some (friendly) stick over not supplying all the advertised species. So you can imagine that after making the switch from Blonde Ray to Undulate Ray and promising to deliver the banter on the way out was about our doubt over Colin’s confidence in delivering. Within minutes of anchoring though we were eating our own words. We boated 2 Rays going 10lb and 14lb respectively almost immediately, with such a good start we thought we might even be in with a chance of getting close to Colin’s previous best of 7 Undulates in a single session. By the end though we hadn’t just equalled the Flamer record but added a couple more finishing with 9 Rays between 10lb and 14.5lb. 5 Anglers had had their personal best Undulate and all qualified for a sea angler mission accomplished badge (if you are into that sort of thing – which I am). Having been pushed off the Undulate mark by a combination of wind and tied we spent the rest of the day drifting the Shambles Bank adding Turbot, Dabs and Gurnards to our species total. It was an excellent days Ray fishing all round and testament to Colin’s angling knowledge and skills.

Great days wrecking on Flamer IV. In the morning Colin said the plan was to start on a smallish wreck at some distance that Colin said fished well on a faster drift, and then move in to larger wrecks as the tide fell away. The day started well, on the first drift we started to pick up Cod to around 5lb – 7lb and some nice Pollock. Fishing was fairly constant but as the drift started to slow Collin decided to give it a couple more drifts just to see what happened before making our move. This turned out to be a good idea, as we began to see some larger cod coming to our lures. We ended up fishing through the slack water catching cod to just under 20lb with a fair proportion well into high doubles. At slack water we started to use hopper rigs adding Ling and a conger of around 40lb to the tally. As the tide returned we carried on catching but as with earlier in the day the average size of the cod started to reduce and the Pollock starting coming on again. Overall it was a great day, weather was perfect, fishing was hectic and rewarding and the company was good and at least 2 personal bests were achieved

Skippers Reponse: Thanks Paul,it was my pleasure as always to give you a good day out on Flamer IV.

Saturday 02 July -011 saw us out wrecking with Colin Penny onboard his new boat Flamer1V. It is no accident that Colin has received so may awards. Right from the time his crew steps aboard Colin never stops working to ensure that everyone gets the most out of their day. His ability to put his anglers over fish is a skill that only comes with experience. The new boat gives not only a comfortable ride but also plenty of space without the elbow to elbow seen in some boats. A top Skipper with a top boat. What more can an angler ask!!.

Skippers Reponse: Thanks Trevor was nice to see you again and catching fish.

My first outing on the new boat and must say I am impressed. Spacious and well thought out with rod and kit storage where you need it whilst still retaining plenty of cabin space. Another really enjoyable day - great boat, nice weather, good company and as usual skipper Colin demonstrating his knowledge and enthusiasm, working hard all day and going the extra mile (extra many miles actually ! ) to eventually find us some excellent fish off the wrecks, including a cod of 22lb. All in all justifies the round trip of ten hours from my home to experience this top level of charter boat angling - looking forward to the next trip.

Skippers Reponse: Thanks Steve.I am Glad you enjoyed your first trip on Flamer IV.

Tonbridge Tanglers on tour and another great year with Colin on his fantastic new boat Flamer IV. 3 great days had with many different species. Colin kept us on our toes with his skillfull skippering, covering reef, sand banks and wrecks. Colin supplied us with his usual in depth knowledge, dodgy sense of humour, general hospitality and a cracking cuppa or three. If your a beginner, intermediate or experienced sea angler, you wont go far worng with Colin at the helm. Thanks to all the Tanglers and to Colin for another fun, exciting and humerous 3 day trip, here's to the next one. Thanks again Colin for all you effort and dragging us to the Chinese again, your company is always a pleasure........even though we pay for it ;-)

Skippers Reponse: Thanks Simon,it was nice to see you and the boys again and I look forward to seeing you all in 2012.

9 Anglers Infected In Species Fever Outbreak: 9 new cases of Species Fever have now been confirmed. All 9 Anglers came down with the fever on 3 June 2011 whilst fishing out of Weymouth on Flamer 4. Seven of the cases were already well known carriers of the fever and designated high risk from their membership of the Flamer Friday Fishers League, sadly 2 pleasure anglers who shared the trip with them were subject to secondary infection during their day out and, it is believed, will probably become serious species anglers themselves as the infection takes hold of them. Species fever is a very real disease and cannot be cured. The symptoms of the fever include, sweating over new mini species rigs, shaking from concern over the correct colour and combination of beads and sequins and visual impairment leading to confusion between various species. Thankfully on this occasion skipper Colin Penny, having been fully trained in emergency treatment of the fever, applied a large dose of 19 species to the anglers on the day. The treatment included 3 species of Wrass, 3 Species of Gurnard, Pollock, Bass, Bull Huss, Dogfish, Conger, Plaice, Dabs, Mackerel, Scad, Blenny, Sea Scorpion and the old favourites Pout & Poor Cod. Having received their treatments from nurse Penny the anglers were allowed back into port restored to something like normality – however it was later discovered that Robin Amor failed to receive a dose of Poor Cod and is still somewhat affected by delusions of competence in the sport.

Had Two great days, Fishing on the new Flamer 4, Colin is a reel gentleman and a true professional at his job. I normally only fish on Cats, but this boat has just as much space and is a very stable platform. Thanks very much Colin Rob, Rich (Staffs)..

First days flatty fishing on Flamer IV today, had a spell on the Mussell Beds before moving to the Shambles. We managed a good number of Plaice in the morning to 4lb with the smaller fish to 2lb going back as part of Colin’s preferred conservation policy. We then moved to the banks for the Turbot. I managed the first fish on the first drift (around 5lb to 6lb) maintaining my 100% record for Turbot on every trip to the shambles from last year. We then managed at least a fish a drift culminating in a well deserved and earned 18lb fish to Russell Salmon (well done Russell). What can you say, excellent Plaice fishing followed by even better Turbot fishing – a great day on the flatty fishing on Flamer IV.

Inaugural trip for Flamer 4 today, first fish landed was a Mackerel closely followed by a Cod then the normal run of quality Pollock and some bonus Ling - as you would expect on a wreck trip with Colin Penny.  Flamer 4 is a lovely boat, at first sight she looks a little like Flamer 3 but once your on board the difference is obvious.  She has bags of space on the sides and across the back she will fish 10/11 anglers in real comfort.  When your on board the space to move around is fantastic making her a worthy barer of the Flamer name.
