Boat and Skipper Details
Launched in 2016, Sea Urchin is fitted with the latest electronics and a powerful Perkins M300C engine. She can get out to the wrecks fast and outrun the bad weather to get us back in when needed. Onboard, there is a sheltered area to get out of the weather, plus a private flushing toilet to keep things comfortable. The deck space is huge giving everyone ample room to fish. A central area to store tackle boxes and bags, plus bait cutting areas front and rear, keep the deck space tidy. Each angler has a dedicated fish box which is stored in a bespoke drawer system. No more lifting boxes or having them fly around in bad weather. Built for comfort, stability and speed, Sea Urchin has it all.
Trip Information:
General - Throughout Spring, Summer and Autumn we generally fish the wrecks and reefs out of Whitby for Cod, Ling and Pollock. In addition to the wreck and reef fishing, in Winter we offer uptiding trips for Cod on the inshore grounds around Sandsend, Kettleness and Robin Hoods Bay.
Our trips in Spring, Summer and Autumn usually commence at 07:00 hrs; but please be sure to check the evening before (as sometimes we may leave earlier). If the tide level requires the use of the Swing Bridge at 07:00 hrs then we need to be sat on the water waiting at 06:50 hrs. Late anglers can cost the whole party precious fishing time, so if you are late, the boat will not wait for you.
Winter uptiding trips see us leave Whitby around 07:30 hrs and come back in for around 16:00 – 16:30 hrs; Spring, Summer and Autumn trips have us back at the pontoon for roughly 16:30hrs.
If you are not staying in Whitby the night before your trip, we recommend you arrive early (05:00 – 06:00 hrs) in the morning to get a chance at a decent parking place. It can be particularly busy through the summer months and although the pay and display car park on Church Street has space for around forty cars, it fills quickly (parking for the day in the Church Street park costs £10.70 for 24hrs).
Once you’ve got the car parked, it’s worth a stroll to the excellent Singing Kettle for one of their fantastic breakfasts (open from 05:30hrs daily). If you need tackle for the day, I have everything aboard which you will need to fish effectively from Whitby. Don't waste money buying random stuff; I will give advice and supply you with terminal tackle and leads at very reasonable prices that are fit for the job.
Don’t forget to book your dates for the Whitby Charter Skippers Association Festival early, so you get the exact date and tide to suit your or your group. Most years, anglers leave it to the last minute and then struggle to get a good tide and space; don’t let it be you this year. You can view the tide heights on the availability page of the booking calendar. Many anglers enjoy a post-fishing pint, with The Station and Middle Earth Tavern being popular pubs in Whitby, where anglers can always be found discussing their day at sea over a cold beer.
As an Angler and Angling Coach. I have been an avid fisherman from the age of four, my fascination and passion for the sea was ignited by my Dad, who first took me fishing off the Marine Drive in Scarborough for Codling, Dabs and an odd Pollock throughout the 1980's. A twenty five year career in the Armed Forces saw me travel and fish all around the world, for everything that swims, from Sharks to Sea Bass; but the hallowed grounds of the North Yorkshire coast have always stolen my heart.
My first proper "wrecking trip" took place on my birthday in 1992 and having ben told the stories by other Whitby anglers, of boats almost sinking because of the weight of Cod they had caught (three doubles at a time, 20's for fun!!), had me a quivering "wreck" on the day of departure. Two hours later, when I was projectile vomiting like there was no tomorrow and sliding around the deck in a cocktail of fish slime and puke, things didn't seem so glamorous!! However, that was just the start of things to come, and I have boat fished the area around Whitby extensively for most of my adult life.
I am passionate about customer service and will do what is necessary to ensure you have an enjoyable day on Sea Urchin. My goal each day is for all anglers to catch fish and I will put pressure on myself to achieve this. Over the years, on the majority of boats, I have seen little guidance given to the first time anglers (apart from, drop it down there, and wind it up when you get a bite). Everyone starts from somewhere; so if you want to start your sea fishing journey with Sea Urchin, I can guarantee that you will get as much, (or as little) assistance as you require. We all have to start somewhere. There are absolutely no guarantees in fishing, but on Sea Urchin I will never be found lacking.

As always great to be onboard , Andys a guy who will tell you as it is , no bull shit , right or wrong a straight answer.
always on hand to help and give advice to both novice and seasoned anglers . he makes it a pleasure to fish with helping with issues and tangles.(some dont )..we always have a chat to see what the day will consist of ,,, ground / wrecks or a mix of both .taking tide and wind into account .
this day was the first day of the WCSA LATE SUMMER FESTIVAL, and boy did we smash it , Andy put us on the fish on the first wreck . OUR CLUB THE KEEL INN BARNSLEY took 1st 2nd and 3rd for the day, you ask for any better results than that. Always a pleasure to be on SEA URCHIN 111.

Good day out on Sea Urchin. Cup of tea to start the day most welcome. Extremely clean and well organised boat with plenty of buckets for bait and washing hands.Very friendly Skipper(Andy) took a lot of care and attention to every body especially the beginers who ,I think enjoyed their day(apart from being seasick but he felt better later) All very happy with the trip. I for one will be back soon...Pouting Pete

After a three week lay off for poor weather, I was really looking forward to getting back to sea.
I had a mixed group aboard today; some of whom have fished with me many times and a few who were new customers. We headed North at first light on a still, warm morning to catch the start of the Ebb Tide.
With it being a big Spring tide, fishing at anchor on the rough ground was the plan for the day. Only a short hop of a couple of miles and we were fishing. The lads went in with 6oz grip leads and flowing traces baited with mainly dirty squid and black lugworm. This is the standard go-to at Whitby for Uptiding. It didn’t take long before a few rods started showing signs of life.
Barry Allcock got off to a good start taking a fish almost every cast for the first hour. Unfortunately they were all small Codling or Pouting so were put back to fight another day. Dan Evans did find one slightly better Codling, but it was clear to me that the fish were not dialled in and feeding with any gusto. We had a couple of moves during the morning, trying areas of different depth and tide strengths etc, but we didn’t unlock the code and just picked up odd fish here and there.
The Flood tide was through just after dinner and it was noticeable that as the tide built, there were definitely a few more bites to be had from the Codling. Simon West took the biggest of the day at 6lb 12oz and Dan Evans had a six pounder as well. It was far from a red letter day, but everyone was superb company and I am just grateful for the support and the chance to get back to sea.
I would advise anyone coming Uptiding to try and secure some good bait (Dirty Squid, Black Lugworm and Crab Cart), it really does make a huge difference. Unfortunately you won’t be able to get any from the shop in Whitby on the day, as they don’t open until later in the day. Two day report aboard Sea Urchin…..
The neap tides are back again which generally means the anglers book on to go out wreck fishing, so that’s what we’ve been up to. On Wednesday we had a funny forecast with lightish Northerly winds and a couple of feet of swell. It wasn’t going to be perfect conditions, so I gave the anglers the option of going or not. Six dropped out, but I still ran with seven anglers who were still keen to come and have a day out at sea.
We managed to find a few Mackerel before running North on the Ebb tide. Arriving at the first wreck, the conditions were ok. The first three drifts saw ten fish come aboard. Best being an 8lb Ling for Ian Kellock and a 6lb 8oz Cod for John Weetman which reminded the biggest fish for the day. A weather front started to close in on us and the breeze lifted making it difficult to get the lines in the wreck as the drift speed increased.
The lads persevered and we picked up fish here and there on mainly muppet traces with squid and mackerel, but it was hard work. We fished three wrecks for the day and whilst it wasn’t particularly productive on the fish front, the true anglers who came were brilliant fun and we had a great laugh.
Today we had similar conditions (even though the forecast gave much lighter winds) for the group of five lads who had the boat booked; but after finding only four mackerel we ran south to a wreck I knew hadn’t been fished for a couple of weeks. I had the usual internal anxiety setting up the first drift, but thankfully there were a few fish at home. The lads got stuck straight in taking a mix of nice clean Codling and Ling for the last couple of hours of the Ebb Tide.
Gary Grantham took the biggest Ling, just into double figures and we had plenty of Cod around the 3-4lb mark. Squid and muppet traces dominated today. Once the flood came through, the drift speed increased significantly and it spoiled the afternoon, with only a few fish taken in the last couple of hours. Still….it was nice to give Simon and his crew a good day out after cancelling their last three trips. Thanks to everyone for coming. It was brilliant to have you aboard. -

To be honest, I was in a bit of a quandary as to what to do yesterday ….After a great day on Monday I had two options in my mind; run off, North or run off South? Thankfully, after a chat with Kevin on Jean-K, he reported a good few fish from the North the previous day, so we ran that way ourselves to try a couple of wrecks that I knew had not been fished in a while.
We had half an hour trying for a few Mackerel, but today it was futile, with only half a dozen joey’s caught. Everyone had plenty of squid so we cut our losses and ran North to try our luck. I set up the first drift over a wreck that has been kind to me before, but regularly gets plenty of attention. I only go there if I think it’s had a break, and today we had another decent start.
As I always do, I watched the first drift on my plotter and when I came on deck, there were a few rods buckled over. Eight fish on the first run over was very encouraging, with some nice plump Ling.
Everyone got stuck in and quite a few fish were landed during the initial drifts. The wind was forecast to stay very light at 5-6mph, but as it turned out, this wasn’t the case. A SSE breeze began to build against the flood tide and it had the unfortunate effect of squeezing us out to sea and across the tide.
This made the lines stream a bit and also made it difficult to get the lines in the wreck. Consequently, the catch rate slowed a bit and after another hour, we pushed on to try another wreck. With the tide beginning to slow, we were now drifting straight across the tide, which I really don’t like as it delivers the bait unnaturally to the fish. That said, we had some really nice clean Codling from the second wreck and quite a few of them fell to the Shads. Rhubarb and Custard being most successful.
Just before slack water, Stan Matthews hooked into a bit better fish and after a heavy lunging fight brought up a nice 14lb Ling which was the biggest of the day. Slack water was very quiet, with nothing much caught, but just before we set off for home the Ebb tide started to run and the fish came back on the feed.
All in all it was another good day out with plenty of banter from the lads. -

The last two days have seen complete contrasts in the fishing aboard Sea Urchin. We are back in Neap tides again, so wrecking was the order of the two days.
On Sunday I had a group of regular anglers aboard and as I quite often do at this time of year, we headed south to try a few of the inshore wrecks in the 3-5 mile stream, which have served us well over previous autumn’s.
After an hours run we stopped at our first wreck and three drifts later with only a small Ling and a few Pouting, we pushed on. We spent the rest of the day wreck hopping.
We caught fish on all of them, but the sport was painfully slow. Muppet traces baited with squid and mackerel did find a few Ling to 8lb, but we only landed two Codling all day. I was really disappointed as I’m sure the lads were. With that in mind, in decided that today we would run out a bit further and try an offshore wreck. After collecting a few Mackerel we ran south again and arrived mid morning with the flood tide running nicely.
I set the first drift up and I like to watch the initial progress of the boat to check the drift line. I came on deck after a couple of minutes and six rods were already playing fish!! We landed twelve fish in total the first drift and I breathed a massive sigh of relief…..
I put myself under a lot of pressure to deliver a decent day and it’s been very hard this summer. Today however; everything went really well for a change. We had a frantic first hour with 6-10 fish a drift with a good mix of Codling and Ling. We had five double figure Ling with four of them between 12-13lb and loads of Codling between 3-4lb which were all pristine bright white fish. Everyone got stuck in and it was a struggle for me to keep up with the net at times.
Sport did slow down after dinner once the Ebb tide pushed through, but by then, we had already done the damage. Definitely the most prolific day for some time. Once again, a massive thank you to the lads for the support. Everyone was excellent company over both days. -

Today we had a group of three lads book the boat for the day. Dave Coote, his brother Pat and Dave’s son Martin. Dave asked me if I could provide them any entertainment, so I duly invited the court jester Ian Kellock along!! Only joking Ian ��
With it still being neap tides (a 4.5m), we planned to spend the majority of the day on a few wrecks. We gathered up plenty of fresh Mackerel to accompany the squid; although the average size was much smaller today. The massive tonkers we were getting appear to have thinned out a bit.
We had three hours of Ebb tide left and with South Westerly winds it wasn’t ideal. The first wreck we fished, Ian managed three Ling around 6lb on a Mackerel baited muppet trace. The other lads were struggling a bit as the drift was well over one knot. We tried another wreck, but just got hammered by Pouting or got stuck. I chose to drop tight inside and spend an hour on some rough ground until the tide eased a bit. Everyone swapped over to Hokkai’s or Shads and whilst the fish weren’t jumping aboard, we did find half a dozen Codling in amongst a tidal wave of Pouting.
It wasn’t long before the wind dropped away a bit, so we headed back to the wrecks; where we spent the rest of the day. We fished another four wrecks for the day. The sport wasn’t amazing, but we picked up Ling on each wreck. Just after the Flood kicked in, Pat hooked into what looked like a decent fish, but then his line went fairly slack. He carried on winding and came back into contact. I should have sussed it, as the next thing we saw was a lovely Tope coming out of the gloom. We netted the fish, took a couple of pictures and sent her on her way. Weight wise it looked in 35-40lb bracket and a first Tope for Pat.
Top rod of the day was Martin who caught fairly consistently throughout ending with a nice box of fish. Ian also helped himself to a good few and then very kindly filleted the catch in the rain on the run back home.
All in all a thoroughly enjoyable day in great company. Thanks lads. Hopefully see you again soon.
