  • 31/05/2023 Fishing Report by Rich Ward on Shy-Torque III (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

31 May 2023 by Rich Ward

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

Pete Yeadon and the lads chose to have a go at the offshore wrecks yesterday on their second day with us.

We ran North 22 miles to a group of 6 wrecks which are in fairly close proximity to each other.

Slow fishing for the boys to be perfectly honest, the first three fish coming aboard being Mackerel!! No white fish from those at all. A little scary!!

We moved to the more Eastern of the group and picked just a couple of dozen fish from those. A bouncy, rolly day on the water with lifting lines didn’t help things but I honestly don’t think the fish were there.

Young Fergus, my crewman took the best fish of the day at 12lbs, a beautiful condition Cod.

Jim taking the second heaviest at a shade under 9lbs.

Shads and baited squid rigs catching.

The banter over the last two days has been fantastic! A real good bunch of lads who it’s been a pleasure to sail with.
See you all next year lads.

    Cheers

  • 30/05/2023 Fishing Report by Scott Belbin on Galloper (Brightlingsea, Essex)

30 May 2023 by Scott Belbin

    Report on-board Galloper

With the summer fishing now ticking along nicely I thought I would take a look back at our early season offshore trips where our main target is spurdog nowadays. It was a funny season really with us missing some of the best tides due to weather or not being booked. As ever the fish were hit and miss. This is often the case when targeting a particular species especially one as mobile as a pack of spurs. It’s easy to come to expect these fish after seeing some great catches in recent years but I always say I am pleased once the first one comes over the rail and ticks the box.
Its interesting to see how the size of fish seem to vary from one pack to the next, as does the colour. I certainly don’t think these fish are wall to wall in this area and I am concerned about increased commercial pressure in them.
although we started the season well the fish weren’t of the stamp we have come to expect around here. Surely enough we did find some nice double figure fish after a while and it was great to see some of the lads breaking their PBs. Adam had set out to catch a decent spurdog this year and achieved it with a nice mid-double but was pipped to the biggest fish by Chris with a lovely fish of over 18lbs! it wasn’t just Spurs coming out of course and we saw some decent bass, hounds, rays and even a stray codling for Wayne. All the while those delightful dogfish and whiting keeping us busy.
On a couple of sets of tides when the spurs went off the boil we went in search of other fish. the lads adapted nicely and we had a pleasant trip on the plaice as well as a couple hours catch pollock and coalfish on another day.
Numbers varied from a couple of days with no spurs (although other species) to a few days on 6-15 spurs among the other fish. to be honest after many years of successfully targeting these fish I am quite pleased with these numbers particularly considering I havnt heard of any other local charter boats catching as much as one this year I cant complain. Of course the promise of a red letter day is what keeps us going through the hard days. We cant always have them but they are days that we dream of. Thankfully we managed to luck out a red letter day once again this year too.
With no signs of spurs for a while it was looking like we wouldn’t see any at all until around 14.20hrs Alex got into something that was fighting very much like a spur. Sure enough a very dark ‘black dog’ broke the surface and was netted. She was a decent fish of high doubles and a new PB for Alex. I commented that hopefully this could be the sign of things to come. It was around half an our later when the next spur came aboard. Yet again a big dark upper double figure fish. it was around 1500hrs when the pack really descended upon us. before we knew it we had various multiple hook ups on our hands. On several occasions every rod that was in the water was onto a fish. there were PBs being smashed all over the place. We had another 2 hours of fishing before I had to drag the lads away from the fish and start the long journey back to Essex. just to give you an idea of how busy the fishing was even when we packed up they were still well on the chew. Barry had just landed a high double figure fish as I started the engines. As I went to haul the anchor he was already re-baited so I said to cast out and I would tell him when the anchor had lifted from the bottom so he would have to reel in. so he cast out, let the weight settle on the bottom and held his rod all while I had already been hauling the rope in. right on que he had a couple of pulls and was into another fish. by the time I had stowed the anchor he had the last spur of the day which they had already weighed at 18.8lbs.
That put the tally to 65 spurs in all (although I may have missed a few in the frenzy) there were 4 over 20lbs and several more over 19lb with most fish mid-double figures and one or two that may not have made the 10lb mark although we didn’t weight them or give them a second glance to be honest. not bad for around two an a half hours of fishing, put it into context in comparison to the other local charter boats currently operating in the this area we had more in the last two hours than most of them have had in their career! Although it may not beat our best day which was 88 spurs, this truly was fantastic angling and we were lucky to experience it. I owe it to the lads who invest their time and money with me each year in search of these fish and others.
We will of course be hunting spurdogs again next year so feel free to get in touch to book your tides. Please remember this is only really suitable for experienced anglers with their own tackle. If you don’t have suitable tackle then you are welcome to join us on a general trip until you find your feet.
On our general trips lately we have seen some fantastic numbers of bass, smooth-hounds and still some rays.
Please get on touch with me for full boat bookings or individual spaces. I can also add you to my messaging list when I am trying to put offshore trips together. Please note that Galloper is a big, fast catamaran with a genuine 60mile code of practice. Not something many local boats can boast these days. All of this helps with our offshore trips and very few local boats can boast a a success rate like ours either.
The hounds will be inshore in numbers until September and we should see plenty more good days and decent fish between now and then.
I have plenty of spaces on general trips for full boat bookings and individuals. I also have spaces for tope, plaice and bass coming up soon so please get in touch.
Remember it is often worth giving me a shout if you are cancelled else where and still wish to get out, as we have lots of sheltered fishing available and a big catamaran which makes it even more comfortable.

    Report on-board Hard Labour

Well what a fantastic day we had. We have done about 7 trips but this one exceeded all others by miles. Carl the skip was so good with helping the novices bait up how to cast explaining what bait would catch what as for his patience outstanding. We had various types of fish coming all day George won the day just with 10 a nice mixed bag all returned for next time. Which we are already planning. Apart from catching fish all day the icing on the cake was the Skipper could make a pucker cuppa coffee what more did we need well happy and sorted. Many many thanks the Finsbury Park Mob.

  • 05/2023 Fishing Report by Mark Peters on DAWN TIDE II (Wallasea Island, Essex)

    May 2023 by Mark Peters

    Report on-board DAWN TIDE II

A quick Report from whats been happening aboard Essex based Charter boat Dawn Tide II

The Bass fishing is in full swing worm baits busy as usual usual marks bug the fish baits getting the bigger ones in the deeper water,
The Lure fishing has really picked up for numbers & sizes the Best day so far this season was well over 200 bass to 7lb!
It dose change out there every day some trips its busy on lures & some trips the worm baits are fishing better. All i can say is if your after bass come prepared to fish both methods theres no shortage out there & i will target them as much as possible.

The Hound fishing has improved size wise the wind put a stop to me bass fishing for a couple of trips so we did a few trips targeting hounds in sheltered waters instead. Plenty about of you fish for them best day was 80+ hounds to 19lb crab baits as usual & we don’t have to go to far either.

The tope fishing has started we lost a beauty while hound fishing locally last week but we wasn’t really targeting them she just took a squid bait it happens. My offshore tope trips had to be cancelled due to the strong eastlys hopefully the next set of tope tides will be settled & give us all a chance to target the Tope offshore.

My Diary is very busy i will try to update my availability but it changes every day so best to call me on 07523488290

  • 29/05/2023 Fishing Report by Geoff Sharp on Sweet William (Tyne, Tyne and Wear)

29 May 2023 by Geoff Sharp

    Report on-board Sweet William

Massive thanks to Ian, Chris, Steve, Warren and their parties for a fantastic trip out yesterday.

We departed the Royal Quays Marina in absolutely glorious conditions; almost no wind, sunshine and glassy seas, and for once, it stayed like that until late afternoon, when a problematic little south easterly wind did it’s best to make the fishing difficult.

As we’ve been doing for the past month or so, we have a little check for mackerel on the first stop…and immediately hit into a few, which was great to see!

The first wreck was a bit slow, with some tricky fishing conditons; the boat was barely moving, yet the lines were kiting out in front of the boat almost horizontally as if there was a 5+ metre tide pushing. We had to try and hold the boat using the engines to give the guys and girls half a chance. Some great stamp codling came up but we abandoned that wreck and moved slightly further inside to some shallower marks.

As we wreck hopped around, the fishing remained steady with every mark producing a great stamp of fish. It wasn’t until mid afternoon that it really pickled up; Steve found an absolute clonker of a Ling, and after a lengthy scrap, with everyone watching from the starboard gunwale, it loomed up out of the depths, and proceeded to give it one last head shake at the surface and slowly swam back down. Steve’s son was picking up a Codling a drop all of which were a great stamp. Warren and his brother found some great fish and also landed an Atlantic Wolffish, which was returned safely. The lads fishing shads were doing really well as the water was gin clear, again, almost a fish a drop all of which were great stamp.

The last wreck proved problematic; when we first set up the lads pulled up five great fish simultaneously on the first drop; and then a strong south easterly wind suddenly picked up making the fishing tricky. I think we picked another fish or two and took that as sign to call time.

The long steam home in the sunshine and calm seas provided ample opportunity for the guys to get their filleting done.

Fantastic weather, flat seas, steady fishing (and the first sight of mackerel) with great craic and company; a skipper’s dream!

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

Pete Yeadon and his 6mates from Leicestershire had the first of their two days with us yesterday.

Nice easy neap tides for us meaning we could try a little wreck hopping for the day on the more inshore scrap.

No golden ticket day to be honest but the lads took fish from each stop which resulted in a tally of around 40 fish to keep.

No “clonkers” but some nice plump Codling to take.

A real enjoyable day with great banter throughout.

Sorry about the crap photo! My crewman Fergus needs lessons on how to use a camera!!

  • 29/05/2023 Fishing Report by Andy Savage on Sea Urchin IIl (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

29 May 2023 by Andy Savage

    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

A lovely day out today with a fantastic group of anglers. Top day in the office for me….

Simon Ullyot and five friends had the boat for their first trip of 2023. With the tiny tide and light winds it was always going to be a day on the wrecks.

We ran south a few miles to our first wreck and pleasingly it gave us some solid sport for a couple of hours. We took 2-4 Codling every drift and Norman Taylor was clumping them every run through. Nothing massive, but a lovely clean fish between 3-5lb.

We proceeded to wreck hop for the rest of the day. In total we fished seven wrecks and just two were unproductive. It was great to finally get a bit of consistent sport.

It was inevitable, but Annie Helliwell stole the show today. On her first boat trip, having never fished wrecks or caught a Cod, she took plenty of fish and also the biggest Codling of the day. She took on board the advice offered and it was great to see her improve as the day went on.

The majority of the fish came to muppet bait traces with a whole squid mounted on them. But, when tried, the Shads were also working, Whites and Rhubarb & Custard being best. A sure sign that it is clearing out nicely.
Everyone had plenty to take home today. A fantastic day spent in great company.

4 matches on the boat this week . First it was the Piscary Super League .On the Thursday we took the chance to get offshore a bit. 15 species on the boat including Keeper Bass, Blondes, Pollack and Turbot Big Tope and Bullhuss.
1st on the day was Ray Barron with
    261 points
    2nd Rod Giles 190
    2nd Steve Harder 190.
On the Friday the easterly winds meant that we had to stay closer to shore however this proved to be a slightly better match with 22 species, more Turbot , Rays ,Big Smoothounds,3 Beared Rockling,3 Rock cook Wrasse and the first Sole of the year.
1st on the day was Darren Phillips with 246 points.
A very close 2nd was Paul Hollyoake 243

    2nd Paul Hollyoake 116
    3rd Gary Rook 104.
