When the weather finally broke last Friday here at Whitby the Spring angling competition got under way properly.
Over the weekend we worked a couple of wrecks on the 9 mile area along with some rough ground. The wrecks providing us with some fantastic fishing with cod to just short of 11 lbs.
Upto press we've managed 7 daily cash prizes in the competition ( more than any other boat ) so things are looking good for the Shy-Torque anglers!
Pictured is Nigel Hall from Richmond North Yorkshire with what we thought was going to be the winning fish when he was reeling in. Turned out to be a lovely treble of cod weighing over 21 lbs.The best one in this treble weighing 9lb 13.5oz getting him a daily cash prize. Lucky but unlucky Nige!!!

Whitby's spring angling competition started here on Saturday. Sadly with the current Northerly airflow down the East coast at the moment we haven't been able to get the competitors away. When we have been this last week though the fishing has been quite good. The inshore ground marks are starting to produce with some nice cod to 9lb on the shad.
The competition runs until 29th April so there is still time to try and grab yourselves the winning first prize of £1000.00 !! We have a couple of days with odd spaces left. Check our website's availability calendar for spaces.

Summers started at last!! Flat calm and better fishing this last week here at Whitby. Nothing of any great size as yet but the quantity has been there. The distant waters are still fishing better than the inshore marks at the moment. Pictured are a regular group of lads on the Shy Torque. Tony Livesey and his mates from Blackburn. Tony is 3rd from right.

After a slow start on the inshore marks on Saturday we decided to try a few wrecks out on the 20 mile stream. These also proved to be quite slow giving us around 15 fish or so. The "Wall" was shouting out to us so off we went! Fortunately the water there was like gin and the fishing was really good. Best lad at the end of the day was Graham Stansfield from Leeds with some 20 cod and 6 ling. All the lads were rewarded for their efforts. A great day with superb weather !! Pictured are Steve Smith and Graham Stansfield.

When the weather here at Whitby has been kind to us we've been seeing some good quality fish aboard the boat. Sadly we just aren't getting enough good weather at the moment !! 8 lads aboard each day at the weekend, both teams seeing some good fishing. We are having to travel to the more distant wrecks and ground at the moment to find the better fishing, but if that's what we have to do, then we do it !! There are fish starting to show on the inshore marks too but not quite as prolific just yet.

The wrecking trips of late have been exceptional here at Whitby ( when we've managed to get off for the weather !! ) Plenty of good size cod to be taken. All the cod taken on the shads with the water being as clear as I've ever seen it in November for years. Hopefully away in the morning again as we have a small window in the weather.

A group of lads from Newcastle asked me some time ago if it would be possible to try and target the Halibut here off Whitby. This week we managed to get the group away to have a go. We sailed at 6 a.m as the grounds where we would hope to get these fish are some 30 miles from shore. On arrival the tide was ripping past too quick so we had to play the waiting game for an hour or so. An hour before slack water and we saw some action. One of the lads had a take which certainly appeared to be a large Halibut judging by the way his 50lb class rod was bending. Sadly after 5 minutes or so the fish was lost. Some 15 minutes after this I hooked into one myself and after a 35 minute battle with 3 very powerful dives back to the bottom I boated a 47lb fish. I was using a Shimano Speed Master 30lb class rod with a TLD15 multiplyer which made this a very exciting ordeal indeed!! All the lads were very pleased to see one of these fish boated and have already booked 3 Halibut trips for next year! If you fancy a try for one yourselves please drop me a line.
