If any of you intrepid anglers out there have ever thought about trying a spot of shark fishing then you could be doing yourselves a massive favour by choosing the fantastic port of Whitby in North Yorkshire. The targeted sharks we on the Shy-Torque III are aiming to catch are the porbeagles which mainly run off here from May through to the end of October. The heaviest porbeagles we have boated to press here off Whitby were both caught this year and one is pictured here. They were both nudging the 300lb mark!!! The lucky anglers who boated them were John Wilcock from Bradford and Dave Brown ( picture ) from Hull. Both fish took well over an hour to land !! We also reckon we had even bigger shark than this on the line this year. One of the " Ones that got away " actually bending the hook almost straight !! Puts paid to the idea that you have to go abroad to experience BIG GAME FISHING !!! If you want to have a go at these magnificent fish next year drop me a line or an Email.

On a recent shark fishing trip we were lucky enough to come across something rather unusual on the Shy-Torque. The day was uneventful regarding the sharks however during slack water my crewman John Wilcock decided to have a go at a little bottom fishing. After 5 minutes or so he hooked into what was going to give him one hell of a scrap for the next 20! With two "runs" on the bottom which peeled off line like a big game fish he eventually pursuaded it to leave the depths and started coaxing it toward the boat. On route the fish made 3 or 4 heavy dives and if it weren't for Johns 50+ years of sea angling experience ( not all with myself !! ) the fish would probably have smashed him to bits ! On seeing the fish approach the surface I decided that the landing net was not going to be sufficient and decided on the gaff. A good decision indeed as the fish nearly dragged me over the side !! John managed this fine fish to the boat using a Shakespeare 30lb class rod armed with 30lb Berkeley Whiplash braid, but just to make it really impressive he was using a 49p 3 x hook Fladen daylight trace bought from our local Boyes store! A credit to both Fladen and John. Well done mate.

Sadly we have just seen the end of another cracking summer angling festival here at Whitby. After losing the 1st two days to severe Northerly storms we managed to get the remaining 21 days of the competition in, some of the days a little breezy though!! We on the Shy-Torque didn't manage to take the winning fish this year however we did manage to get what was classed amongst the majority of anglers over the 3 weeks to be the best fish caught in the competition. The leading cod up until the last couple of days was 15lb. My old mate Guy Wrightson fished with us for the last week and on Thursday 8th managed to capture this fine beasty of 17lb 5.5oz on a swim shad. We had to travel to a wreck some 39 miles from Whitby to find him but it was worth it in the end. Guy is pictured here with his fish with which he will receive £500.00 from the Whitby Charter Skippers Association at our presentation night soon. Well done mate !!

The second sharking trip of the year took place aboard the Shy-Torque on Monday this week. A group of 4 lads from Skegness joined us on this mission. The weather was perfect for the job on the morning of the trip and remained that way all day. The mackerel fishing was excellent throughout the day making for plenty of chum for the lads. Based on our last sharking trip 2 Mondays ago ( pictures to follow ! ) we really were hoping for great results again. With the anchor dropped at around 9.0am things were going a little slow to say the least until at 11.45am Greg Parkin pictured here managed to beat this fine Porbeagle to the boat after a 40 minute battle. Well done to you Greg and looking forward to seeing you all again on your 2 day mission at the end of September.

The fishing just gets better here at Whitby at the moment. Most of the inshore marks both ground and wrecks are showing excellent signs. The main reason for this is the amount of sprats which have arrived recently. A mixed group of lads today had a good box of fish each from the inshore spots. Pictured here is Paul Siddle from Patrington Nr Hull with a nice cod of 10lb.

Some fantastic weather here at Whitby this week has helped to provide some equally fantastic fishing. Inshore marks are starting to produce a few more fish at last but the ground out on the " Wall " has given us on the Shy Torque a couple of cracking days this week. Plenty of cod and ling for the taking out there at the moment !!
