For the past three weeks, Holyhead for the best part has basked in sunshine and clams seas that have allowed us to sail every day, catching an array of fish from a few ounces to well into double figures.

Fishing has been split, sometimes in Holyhead Deep, with double figure tope, spurs and also pollack to 7lb. Other times we’ve been inshore fishing, no need for a 2hr steam with huss to 14lb only 25minutes away, along with double figure smoothhound and an array of species such as wrasse and pollack under the rocks, the best pollack this week 10lb 10oz, although to be fair the vast majority between 1 and 4lb.

Anchoring work has seen many species coming to the boat, including the mighty dogfish, whiting, gurnard, rays, dabs and many more

Police v Fire Service match angling

Normally two or more boats are involved, for 2017 the event was brought to Holyhead and hosted by us with the Police National Boat Angling team.

For the practise day, we had the Police team with us hoping to glean information to overturn a run of 4 defeats against the Fire Service. Fishing was consistent throughout the day, pollack and wrasse on the drift, with dogs, whiting, dabs, Huss and others at anchor. No world beaters, but great fodder for a match angler, single, double and triple shots of fish being landed.

Many rig and bait changes throughout the day as they honed in their tactics ready for the challenge of the Fire Service team.

Fortunately the practise was a success and during the event itself, the Police team used the information learned the previous day well as they romped to a 300point win over the Fire Service guys.

Had a day on the boat myself on Friday 12th May. Bit of a spring clean in the morning, tidying up the cabin, that looked like a battlezone following a few great weeks of angling. The weather was fine though, so it called for a spot of relaxation and fishing. A few hours afloat with friend Keith was called for, nothing too hectic, just a spot of smoothie fishing.

We’ve had a few hounds already this month, but it is this weekend that I class as the traditional start to our hounding season. We weren’t disappointed. I wouldn’t say it was hectic at all, slow in many parts, but we did land a good few between us. However the weather was calm, we ate like kings and put the world to rights with a few laughs along the way.

Keith was the first to catch using a Shakespeare Agility Sea Tipster with Penn SSV 5500 fixed spool reel, the same combo available daily as a prize during our smoothhound challenge. His first hound of 2017, estimated at 14lb and a great start to our fishing.

Another reason for wanting to get afloat was to take a look at the Penn Rampage 9ft Bass Spin rod. I ordered a couple from our sponsors Pure Fishing, specifically for the smoothhound sport that we get from Holyhead. The rod, rated 15 – 55gram is as described a Bass rod, but handled correctly had the potential to offer some superb action for anglers aboard My Way. Taken from the Penn website … They sport a progressive semi-fast taper action, but with a stiff butt to provide long range casting performance with lighter lures. Fitted with Fuji rings and an aluminum reel seat.

I partnered the rod with another Penn, this time a Battle 4000 small fixed spool. It took a couple hours before this rod had an enquiry from a hound, but the reel and particularly the rod performed superbly well. Initially the reel was set with a fairly light drag, allowing me to get used to the rod with a small, but still hard fighting smoothhound on the end.

Managed to land another small hound on the rod later in the day, but still no double, sure that will come over the next 6 weeks.

    Angler Report from 10th May

So today, myself and a great bunch of lads went out on My Way with Gethyn Owen, great banter, excellent food including the poshest sausage and bacon sandwich and the best millionaires shortcake I’ve ever eaten.

We started on the drift for pollock and wrasse and were rewarded with a few fish for our efforts including cuckoo wrasse, ballan wrasse and pollock for myself, then we headed to the deeps and after a couple of fruitless drifts in which the pollock must of been hiding from the predators that were following.

Gethyn put the anchor down and we were away, it was quiet for 20 mins or so and then Carl Gwarek had a nice tope.

Followed by the first spur to Norman Bowerman, I then lost what felt like a nice spur when it bit through my trace, gutted. Meanwhile Tom Murphy was making easy work of the spurs.

Then the pack tope came on the feed with a flurry of fish around 10lb mark including one to myself, thinking my chances of a spur had gone when I noticed a bite, hit into it and felt it was a better tope all the way in until I saw it, I was made up when it went into the net, first spur ever after years of trying not a bad one either! Just like buses I had another one quickly and that was a better sized one probably into low doubles.

We then headed in shore for a few more drifts that threw up some nice pollock, then, it was onto the hounds and we all put on peeler and went for it, it was slow as expected with it being early for them. Paul Anthony Brooks had a small Huss and then the first hound came aboard to Anthony Harrison, I won’t mention the one that was knocked off shortly before.

I then had a nice bite and struck into what felt like a really nice fish, it fought hard all the way to boat where gethyn put it safely in the net. A hound of double figures, this was the icing on the cake for me and it finished what was one of the best boat trips I’ve ever had. I highly recommend Gethyn, a great day out. Cheers lads.

Edit, forgot to mention Ste Macfie and his cracking spur aha

Mark Cain smashed his PB last year during the smoothhound challenge with a fantastic hound of 24lb. He opened his 2017 account on a Weds 03rd May, a couple weeks early from this years event with another mighty fine hound pushing My Ways scales to 20lb 1oz

Great day afloat with a boat full of novice anglers, all keen to learn and get amongst the fish.

A good mixed bag from anchor fishing including the usual suspects of dogs, whiting, codling and huss etc, plus our heaviest smoothie of 2017, a nice 16lb 6oz specimen for Phil.

On the drift we had a plentiful amount of small pollack and ballan wrasse. Plus side no rigs lost, just a few leads to rotten bottoms. Lovely day afloat with a good crew.

Report from Wirral based angler Dave Walker

Well. What can I say..... fished on my way skippered by non other than Gethyn Owen today, out of holyhead. Skipper reckons it was a slow day today, but if a slow day involves tope, spurdogs, huss, wrasse and pollock, then I can't even begin to imagine what a good days like!!!!!!!

Another member of the Mersey hound family was on board, Tom Murphy. He's relatively new to boat fishing but with the guidance of Gethyn managed several new species and shattered his previous pb's! I myself obliterated my pollock pb! No official weight but believed to be around 7lb. Cannot recommend this boat enough!!!!!!!!!! Top, top days fishing!!!!

19th & 20th April have been great fun with My Way regulars and a visit from our Sponsors Pure Fishing.

Pure fishing is the worlds largest tackle manufacturer, with the most elite range of products, respected brands such as Greys, Penn, Shakespeare, Abu Garcia, Berkley plus many more. When looking at UK angling, media & product design in particular, two names stand out, Mike Thrussell and Steve Souter. Both have a long history in angling journalism and product design; rods, reels, line, hooks plus more. Steve also having enjoyed a hugely successful career in the UK match angling scene, with many competition successes from around our coast.

Mike and Steve are part of an impressive consultant list boasted by Pure Fishing, I would suggest its safe to say that the UK scene in particular is in safe hands with an extremely bright future ahead.

Our fishing over the last couple days can be best described as patchy, the drifting working really well with some lovely early season pollack, wrasse and the odd codling being caught on the drift, with plenty of smaller species with a few spurs and huss at anchor.
