When I bought Size Matters from Graham Hannaford back in March 2016, he give me a very old survey book full of marks for rough ground, rock and wrecks that he had never been to or looked for. With over 40 years wrecking experience behind him he said to me if you have the time try and find these new marks to fish. On Friday I had a group of individuals onboard who booked to go wrecking for the day using artificial lures.
I told the lads I have been so busy sharking and Conger fishing that I haven't been Pollack fishing for over a week so it mite take a while to find a the fish. I decided to try and look for one of these new marks, straight away I found it a very small structure on the bottom with a very good sign of fish about 200ft up tide of the mark. From the first drift we where into Pollack sometimes up to 15 fish a drift. The lads finished the day with 119 Pollack to 8lb (most where 3lb to 5lb), 3 Ling to 12lb, 1 Cod 13lb and a cracking John Dory of 6lb 8oz.
What a cracking day fishing for the lads and they couldn't thank me enough on the way back in after filleting all the fish for them.
The next morning I told the lads onboard what we had caught the pervious day, they said it's going to be one of them, YOU SHOULD OF BEEN HERE YESTERDAY DAYS! How wrong they could of been, it was even better the lads totally 134 Pollack to 10lb with most being 4lb to 8lb. I was filleting fish In between drifts and on the way back in just to keep up.
The lads where so happy with the trip they booked six charters with me for next year and said they have not seen Pollack fishing like that for over 10 years. On both days I fished 4 new marks and they all had a very good sign of fish on them. The best thing about both days was we where only 1 hour 30 minutes away from Plymouth so the lads had maximum fishing time. Over the next few months I will keep looking for more new marks and trying my best to keep this standard of fishing up for my anglers.

The shark fishing from Plymouth is in full swing, if you are booked on with us over the next two months for sharking then you are in for some cracking fishing. Back in March when I was guiding in Norway for Sportquest, on the first week the lads I was guiding where from Manchester they caught loads of Cod to 65lb. Once they knew I could put them on the fish they started asking me about sharking from Plymouth. I told them our best day last year was 54 Sharks in a day, so they booked two days with us. On the first day we left the harbour looking for mackerel and straight away we seen birds working. I stopped the boat told the lads to drop there feathers in and up come strings of school bass about 30 in total. All returned alive, then they started to hit a few mackerel once we got enough for hook baits we where off to our chosen mark. The lads had never been sharking before so it was all new to them. They caught 18 Blues to 64lb, sadly no big ones that day but they had a good time and learned a lot. Next day I decided to try a new area, the lads knew what to do and they caught 24 Blues to 99lb 3oz and one baby Porgie about 10lb. The lads totalled 43 Sharks over two days, that's good fishing anywhere in the UK. The lads have booked a day Conger fishing with us in September, so watch this space.

About six months ago I got a call from my old match fishing mate Joe Perry from Liverpool, he said my 11 year old son Jamie is obsessed with sharks and would love to catch one. Well the time had come to try and catch him the fish of his dreams. On the first day lads caught 13 Blue sharks to 70lb, the biggest being caught by Jamie and it was his first ever shark.
The next day we went for Blonde rays and Conger, the best ray went 19lb 8oz and the best Conger just over 30lb.
The best thing was seeing 11 year old Jamie catch his first ever Shark, Conger and Blonde ray. The memories he has got from the two days will live with him forever ever, it's a shame more kids don't try fishing instead of sitting in front of a computer playing video games.

August has been very good so far onboard Size Matters from Plymouth, we have been catching Conger to 70lb, Ling to 26lb and Pollack to 9lb.
On one trip we set off at midnight yes midnight, to give the lads the best chance of fishing tide and wind together so I could anchor a wreck for a chance of some big Conger. The lads fished hard and caught 47 Conger to 70lb, 8 Ling to 17lb, 4 Blue shark to 80lb and a 30lb Porgie.
All on Conger traces no wire, the biggest Blue Shark was caught on the bottom fishing for Conger. Most days when anchoring the wrecks we are catching 40 to 50 Conger and Ling.
The Pollack and Cod fishing has slowed down but things should pick up in the next set of spring tides. For the next two months we have a lot of Sharking and Conger trips booked so watch this space you mite just see a few big ones being caught.

ATTENTION ALL ANGLERS..
Size Matters will be in Liverpool for the winter Cod season on the 20th October and will be available for charters from October 23rd to April 9th. Kevin will be fishing neap tides in the Mersey and Spring tides over the banks and channels in Liverpool Bay. Size Matters will be sailing from Liverpool Marina and most charters will be 9 to 10 hours depending on lock times each day. It has also been known for Kevin to stay out for up to 13 hours at no extra charge!!
ABOUT THE SKIPPER..
Kevin has over 30 years fishing experience and is a mad keen angler who lives for fishing.
He is so passionate about what he does,
to him it's not work it's a way of life.

LIVERPOOL..
Kevin is a born and bread scouser and he knows the Mersey like the back of his hand.
The best things about fishing in the winter from Liverpool you are fishing within 10 minutes of leaving the lock gates, you are fishing in well sheltered areas from the strong winds, you have the view of the world famous Liverpool water front just a few hundred yards away and best of all is the fishing. Last year our best day on the Cod was 64 keepers to 15lb 8oz, our best day on the Thornback rays was 56 to 13lb 5oz!!!
THE VESSEL SIZE MATTERS..
Please note Size Matters is 45ft in length and is 16ft wide. This provides a massive deck space and can easily accommodate 12 anglers in comfort, some anglers even bring fold out camp chairs there is that much room.
Cost for the whole boat charter is £450 maximum 12 anglers and individuals are £45 per person. All charters include top quality rod and reel hire, all your rigs, weights and hot drinks. Bait can be arranged if you need it, black lug is £3 per pack of 10, squid is in 1lb boxes and costs £4 per box.
ONBOARD FACILITIES..
We do not do food just quality fishing charters but there is a microwave and kettle onboard if you would like to use them.
The wheelhouse can seat up to 10 anglers and is fully heated; perfect if it's a wet cold winter day or night to dry out and warm up.
There is heated and spacious toilet facilities you can use at your convenience, but must be kept clean at all times.
If you want to keep your catch for the table Kevin will professionally fillet it so you don't have to do it when you get home after a long day at sea.

The weather has put a stop to the fishing again! We have had some very good days this week catching Cod to 20lb 8oz, Pollack to 14lb and Ling to 10lb. First off I had Crediton SAC onboard for there monthly trip they totalled 62 Cod, Pollack and Ling. Then I had a group of individuals onboard for two days first day was the hardest day I have had this year they only managed 20 Pollack all day. There was lots of fish showing on the sounder but would not feed at all and the fish we caught where coughing up tiny sandeels. The worst part about it was some of the lads onboard had never been to Plymouth before and I wanted to show them what's on offer. I also had some old boys on telling me what the fishing was like in Plymouth 30 years ago, that didn't help either.
At the end of the first day I said to all the lads onboard that's the worst day I have had this year so tomorrow we are sailing at 6am and we won't be back in till you fill the boat with fish.
Next morning we set off, the first two marks we fished where very slow, then I hit my third mark of the day when the tide was just right. The old saying goes ( it's like shelling peas) for the next 3 hours the lads boated over 80 Pollack and Ling, just what I had hope for and most of all the lads got to sample the fine fishing on offer from a Plymouth. Just got back from what was planned to be a 5 day Guernsey trip, but Mother Nature had other ideas. The forecast for the 5 days was looking very good, we set off on Monday trying a few new wrecks catching plenty of Pollack to 12lb 8oz, most where 8lb to 10lb with the odd Ling to 10lb. On the Tuesday the plan was to try for Black Bream and what ever else was on offer, the lads caught lots of small bream to 1lb, Huss to 10lb and Gurnard. Then I suggested trying a different mark on the first drift we where into Bream to 2lb+ then from out of know where a thunderstorm hit, there was fork lighting just to the south of us and it rained so hard the lads couldn't fish in it. Bearing in mind they all had hold of carbon rods, so I said to the lads we best get away from this storm. So we headed east away from the storm then as it was clearing we headed back to Guernsey. I would not like to experience getting hit by lightning at sea!! On the Wednesday morning the plan was to go on the banks chasing Turbot and Brill, I got the forecast at 6am and it had totally changed. The only chance to get home was Wednesday or Sunday, I called the lads and told them the news. They didn't fancy getting stuck in Guernsey for an extra two days so we headed back to Plymouth. I said to the lads I am going to try a few wrecks I haven't been to this year so it might fish or it might not.
All I can say is thank god the fish gods where on my side again, the lads totalled 50+ fish Cod to 16lb 8oz, Ling to 15lb and Pollack to 10lb.
It was good to see Cod making an appearance in numbers for the first time this year, the lads returned the smaller ones and also lost 2 big Cod as they got back into the wreck. It's just good to know they are there now in numbers and we can target them as well as the Pollack and Ling. Maybe the Cod are just starting to show and the season is getting later each year, that seems to be the trend with most other species now days.

If you want to know what the fishing is like onboard Size Matters from Plymouth then here is a summary of the last week.
Drifting the wrecks has produced over 50 Pollack a trip to 9lb along with Ling to 28lb odd Cod to 7lb and a nice John Dory. Wrecking at anchor is producing plenty of Conger to 90lb along with Ling to 21lb, targeting these big Conger you need fresh bait, good tides, good weather and lads who are keen to fish for them!
On one of the days I had a small group of anglers onboard who wanted to go for Conger and Sharks so we fished the flood tide for the Conger at anchor. Then at slack water we went on the drift for sharks, the lads caught 30+ Conger to 40lb and 9 Blue Sharks to 105lb. That's the good thing about a small group hiring the whole boat you can do two types of charters in the one day.

Just returned from a three day Guernsey trip, the weather was as good as it gets warm sunny days with just a light breeze each day. The lads where planning on fishing the banks for Turbot and Brill, after a few phone calls we found out it was not worth fishing the banks due to very poor catches. So the lads decided to target the Bream, they caught plenty to 2lb along with Tope to 20lb, Huss to 10lb, Pollack and Gurnard. The other two days they targeted the wrecks catching lots of Conger to 50lb, Ling to 20lb, Pollack to 7lb and just a single Cod about 5lb. The lads all enjoyed the trip and have booked a 5 day Guernsey trip next July, it's a shame the banks where not fishing but that could all change in just a day.
I have been let down for this weekend July 8th and 9th perfect tides and the weather forecast looks amazing. The boat is available for Sharking, Wrecking or Reefing.

Our first sharking charter this year went ok, I had a group of lads on from Stoke who had never caught a shark before.
They caught 7 Blues to 92lb, lost 1 and missed 3. The lads done a cracking job at keeping the chum trail going and catching plenty of mackerel and whiting for bait. It was tough at times with big patches of algae passing the boat and a few long quiet spells. Once the algae clears on the next spring tides, the sharks should be in good numbers just like they where last year.
