    July (early) Catch report
Last weekend started with Lee Campbell from Benton catching a 14 lb ling on Mackerel baited daylights.
This was Lee's first ever boat trip last Friday.

Saturday's trip also managed a couple of decent fish but there was no great numbers of fish.
Tony Crawford from Carlisle caught a 13 lb Cod on a 3 inch shad.

Andrew Mackie caught the biggest fish of the weekend and his personal best ever fish a 15 lb Ling which took a Mackerel strip fished on a long flowing trace.

Rick Fisher from Beverly North Yorkshire also caught his personal best ever fish a 12 lb 10 oz ling which also took a long flowing trace baited with Mackerel.

The advantage of using a single hook on a long flowing trace is that when the fish is hooked there are no loose hooks to foul the wreck when retrieving the fish.
For a good job there were a few good size fish as the number of fish caught are well down from June.
As usual the cod fishing always seem to get harder when the Mackerel come in and at present the Mackerel are in great numbers here at Amble.

    Report on-board Sunbeam III

Sun 07/07- what a glorious weekend so far- beautiful day yesterday and Sunday morning was even hotter, had 5 customers today for the full day and left the quay at around 8:45 went and picked up a few mackerel for bait before anchoring up, then got settled in and tope rods out, we weren't waiting long before we had our first run so whilst everyone getting excited a second one decides to go, so we have two fish on at once (again) they're testing us this year I think :) anyway both we're landed nice fish too and bigger than yesterday's both at the 35-40 lb mark which is great to see and good fun to land.... So after sorting the rods out the kettle goes on and the rods go again, 2 at once! The first tope gets to the boat and shakes its head quite a lot and snaps the line which is a real shame but the fella got a good fight of it and got to see his fish, the other one on also got away which is annoying but hey that's fishing, 2 more tope followed soon after again good size fish... All in all happy customers a beautiful hot calm day- couldn't have asked for more - onto the tide trip with 4 customers and found some lovely mackerel 27 in total so they're about now .... Really great day yesterday with nice customers and lots of fish hope to see them again .... Lets hope this weather stays!

I would like to thank Nigel and Ashley for a great evening trip. The weather was perfect and we had a great evening with us catching 27 mackerel in total. It was even better that I caught the first fish!! It was fun to learn how to fish with easy instructions , Ashley is very knowledgeable . Both her and Nigel made it a very enjoyable experience one that I would like to do again, I would certainly recommend this crew and trip to anyone who wants to have a smashing day out! thanks both Faye and Dan

  • 08/07/2013 Fishing Report by Bob Marshall on Duke IV (Ramsgate, Kent)

8 Jul 2013 by Bob Marshall

    Report on-board Duke IV

The fine weather has reached Ramsgate at last and the fish are arriving with it.
Skate Bass and good Mackerel fishing are on the menu along with a few Smoothounds.
Students From Royal Alexander & Albert School enjoyed the day aboard Duke IV with Mackerel, Doggies and a couple of large Skate giving Matt and Bailey a good workout. Josh and Paul were busy all day with Mackerel and Doggies with all the team catching plenty of fish.
Friday saw us out on the wrecks with a good haul of plump Cod to double figures favouring the shads to the jellies with Will landing the best Cod that was also the lst of the day at a shade under l2lb. A short stop at the banks on the way home drifting worm saw Will land a fine Plaice with a few Mackerel to go with it. Saturday saw us wrecking again with similar results along with more Pollack.
Gemmas group came fishing yesterday looking for fish for a bbq, they went home with a cooler box filled to the brim with Bass, Mackerel and a couple of Skate so not much room for the steaks!
With the Mackerel and shoaling School Bass now here in good numbers this is the time for the big Bass that will be looking for mackerel baits.
Pic shows Marcs group with some of Saturdays Cod.
Still dates available on Duke IV for groups or individuals!

  • 06/07/2013 Fishing Report by Ron Angel on Why Worry (Burnham-On-Crouch, Essex)

6 Jul 2013 by Ron Angel

    Report on-board Why Worry

I don't know where to start with this.....

Another 4am away but this morning the Mackerel were easier to get. We had them and the Hook down on the Tope by 7.30am. It was slow to start but as I say, Tope fishing is a waiting game and I knew as soon as the Tide eased we start to see some action but even I never knew was coming. Rokers and smaller Tope a plenty.
Then it happened. I baited Stews rod with a head and Guts and he cast out and set the Gear. As we were nearing Premium Tope time of the tide I got my directors Chair out in the Sun so as I can survey my Domain and what it is occurring! PMSL!!! Then Stew got the run I knew we had been waiting for. Stew knew the score and waited for the second run....Fish on! I knew this was a good one as she made a couple of runs but stayed deep. He did well but fook he knew what was coming if he made cock up and lost it! lol
I was thinking 40-50lb in my head.....Before I saw her. I first saw her when loomed up from about 20ft of clear water which is when I saw her eye. Now I was thinking she was going to be around 60lb.....Then as she got to around 10ft down she rolled and I knew this was the fish I have been after for a long time. She slipped easily in to the Tailer and then I could breathe a sigh of relief as she was now ours. We lifted her aboard and she was heavy in pup. Straight in to the wet slings which weigh 2lb. I lifted and the Rueben Heaton scales swung to just over 73lb which made her 71lb. What a fish for Stew to get. I am truly made up for him. A million thanks to Tiny because with out his help I don't think I would of got her aboard. The rest of guys were also brilliant, clearing there lines and clearing the decks.
Well done everyone. You all played your part. What a great day and a fish of a lifetime at the end of it.
She went back OK, it would of killed me if she hadn't and that was my main concern. If I had lost her on the deck I honestly don't think I could of ever gone Tope fishing again and that is the 100% truth.
    Just magnificent!!
