When it comes to fishing in the winter knowledge is key
I learnt that from fishy rob out of Brighton.

With the tides being so big and the fishing being hard I knew I had to think out of the box. With that I put a crew together to go plaice fishing.

Not knowing what the outcome was going to be. In the morning I got the lads to meet up at #fortroadcafe for breakfast. Being that it was flat we was quite chilled on the time to set sail so we left at 9am quite a sivolised time. Heading out to sea I decided to tern left and headed out for an hour once we got to the mark what seemed like forever. We decided to anchor up fishing a standerd flatti rig with worm . As soon as we got there within seconds the first rod had gone with a double shot of plaice shortly followed with a few more. As the day went on the fishing started to drop off .

So with that I decided to move eaven closer to the beach .mind you we wasn't fish that far out to start with
After resetting the boat the fishing continued with some flounder's dabs and more plaice being caught

Total tally for the boat 23 plaice 17 keepers 2 Flounder and 15 dabs returned bringing us to over 40 flat fish for the day

On the way back out new team member James gutted all the fish with everyone tired and cold I knew my job was complete till the next time

  • 10/12/2022 Fishing Report by Simon Logan on Deep Blue (Eastbourne, East Sussex)

10 Dec 2022 by Simon Logan

    Report on-board Deep Blue

    Saturday 10th December 2022:

A day spent on the wrecks.

Leaving the marina to freezing temperatures and flat calm seas. It was the first time I’ve ever had to scrape the ice from a boat.
Car trouble forced a couple of the crew to bail out, so a crew of 5 headed out to some of the deeper wrecks that litter the seabed along the East Sussex coast.

We got to the first wreck right in the middle of the 6.9m tide. With little wind we were still drifting at a canny rate of knots. That didn’t seem to matter to the fish. We had a nice bass (5lb guesstimate) first, followed quickly by a tank of a pollack weighing in at 16lb’s.
Alex, the big fish’s captor, would go on to land a couple more pollack at and around the double figure range. He also had the biggest pollack of the day, I reckon towards 20lb, spit his lure out on the surface, and I just couldn’t stretch any further to get it in the net before it kicked off and swam back to the dark. The one that got away indeed. I could’ve cried.

The other Alex, who landed the bass, had something huge take his lure and snap him off back on the wreck frustratingly. It was great to see these big fish so early on in the winter wreck season.

A couple more smaller bass were caught, and ALL bass were returned back into the sea as per the current bass ban Dec 1st - April 1st.

Quite a few squid about still. The biggest was an absolute lump. Must’ve been heading towards 3lb.

All in all a good day had exploring some old, and some new marks.

This will be the last trip out until after new year, when all things going well, will see this Deep Blue going to a new home, and the launch of my new boat, Deep Blue V2.

This year has been an absolute whirlwind. I’ll do a year recap on here soon, but for now, Deep Blue out.

So today's weather was abit of a rough start. After hearing the forecast was ment to be flat. It definitely wasn't. Leaving the harbour for a 9.30am start we decided to head west down to the tin can as I call it.

Starting a drift from south to north it was ideal for our drift along the pipeline. Catching a few wighting and mackerel for the first 2 hours. After 2 drifts I decided to head Futher west to a different pipeline. This didn't go my way being devoid of any life.

We then set off east to a wreck once there we had 3 drifts over the wreck trying Muppets a drift shad on the second rod and worm ripped with squid on the 3rd rod. This also was devoid of any life .

We then headed to seaford bay to try for some plaice this also ended bad. So going back to our original mark we ended up with more dog fish mackrel a pout and wighting. So not a brilliant day today but there are fish still milling around.

Should be a few more cod showing now the temperature is dropping, also thornbacks on the Goodwin's with the big females nudging well over 15lb, plenty of other species to keep the rods moving with channel whiting plump dabs smoothhounds pouting whiting and strap conger on the wrecks, most trips at mo producing 40-50 fish a rod, so there's some bumper months ahead, remember all equipment baits supplied and hot pies for lunch,

So today we had a crew onboard for a birthday so happy birthday to mo hope you had a fantastic day .

So when I got to the boat on Saturday I could see the amount of fresh water coming out of the river. Not a good thing for an Inshore fishing trip. Counting our odds I set to sea. Hopefully we would find some fish.

With a western wind and small tides it made it hard to Anker and sit the way I wanted to sit . Putting over some Conger rods we hoped a biggy would be lurking around. After hearing a couple of skipper's talking over the radio I instantly knew it was going to be a tough time. After an hour we saw a string of mackerel coming over the side I was shocked by that. We decided to put a live bait down . And to my surprise a jhon dory came to a whole live mackrel.

In shock I told him to get another live bait on to which a small bass came to us. With us running out of time. We saw a Dogfish come over and then nothing.

  • 13/11/2022 Fishing Report by Simon Logan on Deep Blue (Eastbourne, East Sussex)

13 Nov 2022 by Simon Logan

    Report on-board Deep Blue

    Today trip, Sunday 13th November.

Similar starting conditions to yesterday, but with a bit more cloud cover and a cooler feel in the air.

A mixed crew 7 strong. Drifting was the first activity during slack water.
A couple of nice wrasse, 2 small pollack, a keeper bass and Deep Blue’s third John Dory of the year came up from the glittering (murky) waters of the channel.

We headed to the skate grounds for mid morning. Anchoring with baits has been more productive for me during the ebb tide all season long. We didn’t have that luxury due to the somewhat awkward tide times, so we attempted to prove my theory incorrect.
The session started slow, with a few dogfish taking out massive squid/mackerel/worm baits.
After two of the crew being bitten off by something 25 metres below us, Brian managed to hook into a nice smoothie. Dan followed up with a very healthy Bull Huss. A couple of bonus bass were also boated. Zero, ziltch, not a single ray was found today. Maybe the ebb vs flood theory has some gravitas.

Lifting the anchor, we headed for this summer’s tried and tested bream grounds. After being told that the bream had all but gone, we found the little spiky sods with ease. Small hooks and the usual squid slivers doing the damage. There were lots, plenty lots. All a decent stamp. One of the crew commented on how productive the bream fishing has been out of Eastbourne this year, comparing it to the Kingmere, which is revered as a bream Mecca.

Lots of fish, some quiet periods, some busy periods, great fun.
