    Report on-board Ocean explorer

Well , what a fabulous day it has been today with the cod catch .over 60 cod caught mostly between 3-8lb for the boat ,and a big congratulations to Ryan , who caught his first cod and a ling of around 6lb .
The start to the day was a little slow for the fish to come aboard as it was low water and a little wind was pushing us along at a couple of knot's ,but as the tide changed and started to move again , everyone was into cod .
The afternoon produced the best of the fishing to cod again ,from just about every drop ,there was even a few coalies caught .
Everyone on board went home with cod
All in all , a excellent days fishing was had by all .
    Thanks Skipper

    Report on-board Lucky Dip II

A quick update. This weather is making heavy going of things out at Portpatrick but when we get out we are getting some quality Pollack, Haddock, and Codling along with the usual Dogs and Bull Huss. The mackerel are sparse although a few are showing up, there are some large shoals of bait fish around so everything should start kick off really well soon. Looking forward to getting onto some Tope later in the year.

    05,04,14 individuals trip.
We left the marina at 5am to headed out into the bay to try a few of the wrecks, the forecast was ok,but as we moved out of the river the wind was starting to gust, some of the gusts where 20 knots which with wind against tide it was to much to head offshore, so we had to resort to the back up plan fish in the river for an hour or two and then try the rock channel as the tide backs off,we set the anchor at a mark in the river and everybody caught whiting,Dabs,Dogfish and small thornbacks. We then moved into the Rock channel and started again,Taking more whiting some nice Dabs and plenty of Dogs,so another move was offered ,the Skipper was out voted so the skipper persuaded a majority vote in the end we moved to another mark where we dropped on 7 Thonback rays ,two Smoothounds and the fist Bass of the year which was returned for another day being undersize overall a great day with the Sun shining all day. nice to see Smoothounds and Bass making a return signs of summer.

    Gary the Skipper.

  • 04/2014 Fishing Report by Gethyn Owen on My Way 2 (Holyhead, Isle of Anglesey)

    Apr 2014 by Gethyn Owen

    Report on-board My Way 2

Early April and the weather played havoc with our scheduled days afloat. This year we cancelled the vast majority of trips during the first two weeks of April, with our first day afloat not coming until Friday 11th.

This day was planned for Holyhead Deep, following our last day in the Deep during the previous set of neap tides in March, hopes were high for a good number of double figure spurs. We started off at anchor with everyone pulling in regular quantities of dogfish and small whiting or the odd codling.
Once the tide had eased slightly we continued our day on the drift, looking to help a few of the guys to first pollack and coalfish species for their 2014 hunts. Thankfully the fish were obliging and we managed to bag a few around the boat; nothing big, with the vast majority all under 2lb in weight.

We made our way to the deeps and decided to have a little play on one of the wrecks on our way. A little early on the calender for our part of the UK, but always worth a go when you're passing. Sadly, nothing doing, not even one small take this time around. Anchored in the deeps, photos from the last trip out here in everyones mind but the fishing just didn't get going. We managed a few good huss, and also a handful of spurs, but nothing of any great size.

Gareth P managed his first ever spurdog, despite being only a few pound in weight, a first is always a great achievement. Another My Way regular, Tojo, also managed to land a few spurdogs, but again nothing of any real size.

The following couple days we were stuck tight inshore with strong southerly winds taking control of the seas around Holyhead. Anglers still managed to bag plenty of fish including a decent variety with dogs and huss playing a large part of every day. Together with codling, whiting and a splattering of other species.

Each year during the Easter break we run Introduction trips, where children and adult novices alike get to sample boat fishing at a reduced cost. Our first day was met with swell left over from the weekend, along with the remnants of a strong NW breeze. Despite this the youngsters made the most of their introduction to angling trip. Restricted travel, but we still caught plenty of dogfish along with a few huss, codling and a nice ling. Great fun and some brilliant smiles through the day. You can read more on this trip and the following Introduction trips in the June 2014 issue of Boat Fishing Monthly.

With spring tides and breezy weather, we spent the next week fishing in and around Holyhead Bay. All crews managed some good fishing, again hampered by very dirty water, with many dogfish coming over the side of My Way, with some anglers fishing for them in quantity, the dogs appeared in 1's, 2's, and 3's!

Changing tact slightly and adjusting rigs and baits, species aboard My Way included the regulars such as huss, whiting, dabs and codling abut also a good number of small ling, a good few thornies, along with more pollack and coalfish and also a lost spurdog!

During one conversation with Harry, we spoke of the possibilty of seeing a new species aboard My Way during 2014. In recent years we had been fortunate enough to see a few rare species, tadpole fish, topknots and also an angler fish and streaked gurnard. Couple days later, what happens along, a lumpsucker! An amazing looking creature.

As the last week in April drew nearer, the tides started to drop and again we turned our attentions to fishing the deeper water 8miles off the coast of Anglesey. The unpredictability of the month to date can be clearly seen from 2 trips, to the same mark that week.

Our first day provided the guys with some great early season fishing, with a good number of spurdogs into double figures, huss, conger and also the first tope of the year, a well conditioned long male weighing in at 26lb.

Couple days later, we were back out there, same mark, similar tide & weather conditions! Sadly though the fish never read this particular script. We managed to pull in only 1 tope, a few small spurdogs and couple huss. With the exception of a small conger at then end, but thankfully a first for young Rhys, the remainder of the catch was dogfish with the odd whiting!

Back inshore for the last few trips of the month, with a good number of pollack and coalfish once again on the drift with a reliable mixed bag at anchor.
Waters are showing signs of clearing up nicely and with both the air and sea temperatures on the rise, crabs are peeling and many more species are moving into our waters. Our focus will soon be turning to the long awaited return of the smoothhounds, a firm favourite with many of our crews.

  • 04/05/2014 Fishing Report by Les Jones on White Maiden II (Lymington, Hampshire)

4 May 2014 by Les Jones

    Report on-board White Maiden II

The Bank Holiday weekends settled weather was fantastic for us all.

Saturday's crew were after the bigger fish with Rays our first target species. We had one decent 7lb Small Eyed Ray caught on a bank and lots of Dogs. We moved off to a wreck for Congers to 20lb before Billy nailed a cracking 10lb 3oz Bass on squid, at the end of the trip and the start of the ebb.

On Sunday the Dyer family had another great forecast which enabled us to head for the Bream grounds. It was all very competitive as Ballan Wrasse, Bream, Bull Huss, Whiting and Dogfish took the various small baits offered. The snaggy ground caused a few problems at the end of the flood so after a short move we avoided the snags and found more Bream. Left is Becka and Bee all very happy on LSD. That's Lesser Spotted Dogfish! It was a sociable but busy day for me but the lovely weather sealed it for all.

My original Monday crew of two were cancelled due to low individuals numbers. I then contacted Tuesdays 'windy forecast' half day crew to cancel when they asked to be moved forward to the Bank Holiday Monday and an early 0630 start. This time was fine by me so we snuck out in the morning for more Bream and Dogfish. Most Hen Bream are in spawn and are dropping eggs so they went back. Young Eddy on the right is holding a nice hen Bream.

Interestingly an Oceanography expert advised that it takes 3 to 4 male Bream to fertilise one female Breams eggs successfully. We release the females and some males too, if the crew agree. It would be good if some guidance could be introduced for all of us to follow! Come on Anglers Trust, what are you going to do?

Another conservation argument this week in the news was the release of 10,000 helium balloons to celebrate a special occasion. The argument against was the littering effect and although latex does bio-degrade, if a fish, bird or animal swallows them before they bio-degrade they will die a slow death. So there's another moral option for us.

With plenty of fish starting to show and lots of dates available give me a call if you fancy a full or half day or evening trip. Tightlines, Les.

  • 03/05/2014 Fishing Report by Nigel Lihou on Optimist (Brixham, Devon)

3 May 2014 by Nigel Lihou

    Report on-board Optimist

The last few trips have found Plaice, Plaice and more Plaice on the Skerries with the inshore wrecks producing some Pollack of between 3lb to 10lb. We still seem to be lacking in baitfish as mackerel are still fairly few and far between but those caught of a good size. After the winter of storm after storm things are starting to settle down with spring species starting to reappear but fishing is still a bit hit or miss they are either feeding in which case we are catching or they are there but not showing an interest. Plenty more trips planned and as things settle it will get better.
