    Report on-board Galloper

There are still one or two rays hanging around inshore to be caught. These are a welcome break from the whiting which are a little smaller in places than they were a few weeks ago. The arrival of sprats has distracted many of the larger whiting and codling inshore. Even the dogfish have slowed with the drop in temperature. Thankfully the occasional ray puts a better bend in the rod. Of course inshore there Is fun to be had targeting flatties. Further offshore there will be more variety available. Those doggies will still be feeding well but between them there will be a better chance of rays, hounds, spurs, cod and bass. For that we will need some better weather though. Looking ahead to the Christmas break and there may be a chance to get offshore if you fancy it. If you just want a social then I will try and put something together inshore. I may even arrange a charity comp if there's enough interest.

  • 12/2023 Fishing Report by Mark Peters on DAWN TIDE II (Wallasea Island, Essex)

    Dec 2023 by Mark Peters

    Report on-board DAWN TIDE II

Well guys that a wrap for the 2023 season aboard Dawn Tide II

Truth be told There is a real lack of decent fish around at the moment.
Basically the summer species have moved off now the Ray numbers we rely on this time of year are down massively & the Cod just haven’t arrived in any numbers just yet so its just whiting dabs or dogs at the moment nit my cup of tea at all.

Out of respect for you guys who fish with me I have taken a decision to postpone all trips from today until the fishing improves.
Im not in the business of just taking your money knowing full well its going to be a tough cold fishless day.
Personally I would rather you saved the money & put it towards the good times when the fishing is better & we all have a good time catching.

Hopefully the Cod start showing towards end of January like last season & the Spurdogs should show further offshore. This should keep us busy through too spring when the rays & hounds should arrive in better numbers in march.
They should be shortly followed by the Bass, Tope & other summer species.

My main concentration as always will be targeting Bass on the lures this has become really popular with my anglers & just seems to get better & better its really taken off big time now days & I can’t wait.

I Just want to say thank you to everyone who continues to support & fish with it me much appreciated thank you

I wish everyone a merry Christmas & a happy new year

Look forward to seeing new & old faces onboard in 2024 the diary is open & its looking to be another crazy busy season.

    Thanks everyone

(My personal favourite time of the 2023 season was midd summer the Bass fishing was fantastic on the lures & live Baits we couldn’t go wrong even the weather was amazing too.
Heres my 10lb 3oz Bass that was returned to hopefully continue to reproduce)

  • 16/12/2023 Fishing Report by Rich Ward on Shy-Torque III (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

16 Dec 2023 by Rich Ward

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

A welcome return back to sea yesterday after yet another lengthy spell off.

My old mate Simon England joined us to try for some Xmas Cod along with Alan Sutcliffe, Barry, Francis and Dave.

The day wasn’t hectic by any stretch, but a few fish were boated wherever we stopped.
No big fish to count, but some really nice plump Codling to just short of 5lbs.

The key to a “hopefully” successful day is always down to the bait quality and Simon always makes sure the best of baits are bought including (when available) crab cart/wings.
He had these with him yesterday and without a shadow of doubt he out-fished everyone on board with around 15 fish boated.
A few of those were returned safely and he left with 9 nice fish to just under 5lbs for the table.

Count for the day, around 25 keepers with the usual juveniles safely returned.

An unusual fish for the hook in these waters too with Dave landing a small Thornback ray. Nice to see for a change!

Young Fergus sadly missed yesterday’s trip as he lost his Grandma a few days ago.
Our thoughts and condolences go to to him and all his family.

    Cheers for now,
    Rich.

15 Dec 2023 by Andy Savage

    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

It was fantastic to finally get a day out today after another lengthy lay off with the poor weather.

I had a mixed group of less experienced Uptiding anglers aboard and an Uptiding Officianado!! We headed out north at first light and ran a couple of miles to a nice area of rough ground, which gave us some shelter from the fresh SW winds. It was a very steady start, with a few Codling here and there, plus a random brace of Lobsters, but this was the time when I try and get everyone fishing properly.

After an hour or so, with only a handful of resident Codling aboard, we nudged up a little further, to fish a lovely ledge which drops off 4m. Once the boat was in position, the lads dropped down and pleasingly there were a few fish about. We had the initial flurry of the fish which were around the boat, but then we started to get flushes of fresh fish moving through (which we haven’t been getting). After a quiet 15-20 minutes there would be multiple bites at once. Nigel Hughes picked up a couple of lovely Codling around 5lb, and Raimondas Zokas took one the same size.

There were some nice clean fish coming up, nothing huge, but it kept the rod tips nodding. Once the Ebb tide began to ease, the wind took more control and we swung around on the anchor, which was unproductive and frustrating. We took the opportunity to run another couple of miles further up to catch the first sniff of the flood tide. Once the Flood came through, we continued to get a few fish here and there. It certainly wasn’t as prolific as the Ebb, but we kept getting bites and a few fish.

As the Skipper I always want to base my angling decisions on whether we move on or not, on an experienced angler who I know. Today I had Simon West aboard and having fished with him on numerous occasions, I knew that if they were there, he’d get them. Simon always brings top quality bait and knows how to use it. With Squid, Fresh Black Lug, Fresh Razor Clams, Crab Cart etc he had a busy day. He kept five nice clean Codling and sportingly returned a lot more.

It was a really enjoyable day for me in fantastic company. Thanks everyone.

There have been plenty of dabs about lately. These little flat fish are a welcome sight on a winters day. We decided to have the afternoon targeting them the other day and sure enough there were plenty caught and some over a foot long too. At times there were double and triple shots which made a nice change to the triple shots of whiting we had been getting before hand. Stephen was probably top rod with 27 dabs for his efforts.

    Report on-board Braveheart II

As the year draws to a close and the last of the better bass move off into deeper water we turn our focus to cod, as a few have been reported from piers and beaches on the North Essex coast and in the nets of the commercials and we have been anticipating a rise in numbers, but in the mean time, thornback rays, whiting, lesser spotted dogfish and dabs are the primary species that have kept rods twitching and bending as remember you can only catch what's swimming under the boat. Even so we have enjoyed some great days out with awesome weather for this time of year and some brilliant crews as a good laugh is always guaranteed onboard. Usually a wager is laid which leads to a bit of friendly competition and definitely adds to the banter on the day.
I still have limited availability over the up to and over the Christmas period so check out the BRAVEHEARTII schedule calendar for availability and pricing. I look forward to welcoming you aboard.

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

After a week off for rubbish weather it was nice to take to the water again yesterday.

Phil Ross and his Dad Andy joined us along with Ted.

We ran to some uptide/downtide marks just a stone’s throw from the harbour to start the day off.

The first spot fished poor with just a couple of small “chuck backs”
With the tide not running much at all, we moved a bit further on where the lads picked half a dozen Codling up.

Young Fergus was slow out of the blocks, but on the change of tide he released his killer baits and started nailing a few too.

Phil taking the best Codling at just over 5lbs.

Tally for the day, a mediocre 15-20 fish and with the chilly rain persisting from around 11.0am, we ran for home at 3.0pm to catch the bridge opening at 3.30pm.

An enjoyable day on the water with good company.
    Cheers lads.

Our next trip out looks like next Friday with the weather looking rubbish until then.
Room for another three or four if you fancy a trip out.
Better tides too by the end of the week.

    Cheers
    Rich.

The Braintree sea anglers had a nice general trip the other day. There were plenty of bites throughout the day. Mostly whiting and dogfish but a few pouting and dabs showed too. There were a few rays caught throughout the day although no monsters but always welcome. It was a pleasant day out in the winter sun despite a chilly start. I have a few days with individual spaces and boat availability before new year. So please get in touch to join us aboard Galloper.
