    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

The great run of good weather continues for us. Today we had a 12hr trip with a group of experienced anglers on board.

With it being a 4.8m tide we committed to wreck fishing all day, knowing the lads would be ok, even if the lines did stream a bit. We ran south and with having an extra couple of hours, we targeted some wrecks we don’t get to fish too often. First stop was on a piece of rough ground to see if we could get a bit of fresh bait. After 20 minutes we had a couple of dozen mackerel aboard, but chose not to waste any more time.

The first two wrecks we fished were 12 miles from Whitby and were spectacularly unproductive. We never even took a fish. The third wreck we tried was another 5-6 miles further on and the first three drift’s produced one Codling. I was getting ready to move us on, when the drift line changed as the tide began to ease. It was like someone had flicked on the feeding switch. That drift we took five fish including a 9lb & 8lb Ling, plus a 9lb Cod. The average size was quite impressive.

We got a good hour in, before the tide got away and it then went quiet again. We wreck hopped for the next few hours for only a handful of fish. It wasn’t until the Flood Tide eased off again, that the bites kicked off. We ended the day taking a few decent Codling around 4-5lb.

It was clear that today the tide change really dominated the fish feeding times. I’m sure that most, if not all the wrecks we visited had fish on, but they just weren’t feeding. The majority of the Codling we caught were absolutely stuffed full of Sandeels. Solid as a rock to feel.

It was a really good day out for me. I find it easy to judge the fishing when I have experienced anglers on board. If their are feeding fish about, these boys caught them. A big thank you to everyone today for a great display of angling.

  • 14/06/2023 Fishing Report by Rich Ward on Shy-Torque III (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

14 Jun 2023 by Rich Ward

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

Yesterday’s morning session wasn’t too bad for the mixed group we had aboard.

We started the day punching the tide South to a group of wrecks just 4 miles from shore.

Two of the wrecks fished ok and produced Ling to just short of 10lb. Some nice plump Codling too.

As we ventured further South the water was clouding up and the fishing was slowing up, so we did a handbrake turn and ran out and North.
Just an odd fish here and there after lunch on the flood tide.
Total tally for the day, around 40 fish.
Another Mediterranean type day at sea!

As we were heading back we came across a dead creature floating on the surface.
It had been mauled and was in a bit of a state.
I’ve never seen anything like it to be honest and it didn’t resemble anything that swims around these shores. Two paddle like fins (pectoral looking) were the only thing that were noticeable.

    Cheers,
    Rich

  • 12/06/2023 Fishing Report by Rich Ward on Shy-Torque III (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

12 Jun 2023 by Rich Ward

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

For those that knew what they were doing yesterday they fished ok and ended with a nice few fillets for the fridge/freezer and were all well pleased with the results.

The thing that really makes me question my professionalism is when you explain to people how to fish and they don’t listen to nigh on 50 years of experience, don’t catch and then say “why am I not catching” I start to scratch my ever balding head!
This game isn’t rocket science and catching fish (if they are there) is quite achievable if advice is taken on board. My crewman and myself are here to guide and explain things if needed.

The more effort you put in, the greater the reward as is the case with most things in life.
    Ok, personal rant over!

We started the day off on a bit of scrap 17miles North for a handful of fish, maybe 8 or so. A move in to the West around 5 miles to a smaller wreck produced only another dozen fish or so, so I decided to drop back to ground/reef to end the days fishing.

We picked away slowly for the last 2-3 hours (2-3 fish per drift) and ended the day ok with Codling to a shade under 7lbs.

Shads worked well for myself with 10 fish and the lads picked away with the baited rigs too.

Another beautiful day on the water with a half decent result in numbers of fish boated.

The Summer competition starts here at Whitby on Saturday 24th June and runs for 3 weeks inclusive.
We still have a few spots left so if you fancy a crack at it just contact me on the number or email below.

Cheers and keep a tight line,
    Rich

12 Jun 2023 by Andy Savage

    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

Without a shadow of a doubt; the warmest, flattest day of the year so far. A beautiful day spent at sea….

Today’s group were all experienced anglers, so I was looking forward to a days wreck hopping on the inshore wrecks. We initially tried a couple of spots for Mackerel, but after just 3 single fish, we sacked that off and dropped on our first wreck.

The first one gave us a few Codling and small Ling, but the drift line meant we were crossing the wreck, instead of running along it. We opted to move on and pleasingly, the second wreck seemed to have quite a few feeding fish on it. The next two hours provided some consistent sport, right through slack water. A nice stamp of Codling with quite a few in the 3-5lb bracket.

Joe was really on form fishing with a blue Mackerel imitation Shad, taking a Codling or two every drift. The best drift gave six fish, but 2 or 3 fish a time most others. Shads and muppet bait traces both caught well.

Just after slack water, as the Flood tide came through, Alan hooked a much better fish. It took a bit of keeping out of the wreck, but he got it moving. After a slow and steady fight with some heavy thumps, a lovely Cod came up through the now clear water. The fish weighed in at 13lb 4oz and was a brilliant reward for Alan, who has kept me supplied with his fantastic Thai Green Curry for the last couple of years.

We fished another 5 wrecks throughout the day, picking off fish here and there; but nothing came close to matching the second one. It seems that an odd wreck is well stacked at the moment, but it’s a bit of a numbers game.
We got lucky today, finding the productive one.

The lads were all brilliant company and it was a thoroughly enjoyable day out for me. Thanks everyone.

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

Over the last couple of days the fishing has been ok but nothing flash to be honest.
The more inshore ground marks giving us the best of the sport. Dozens of Haddock each day with a good number of keepers. Great to see!

Yesterday’s trip however was slightly different with my old mates Guy Wrightson, big Sam Anderson and Steve Bradbury and others.

A slow start to the day till we moved to a little wreck I know and the day changed completely!

Steady fishing for the rest of the day resulting in 60-70 Codling to keep with few Ling too.
Shads and baited rigs doing the job as usual.
No clonkers but some fine plump fish to just a shade under 7lb (which leads the Shy-Torque fish of the month) so far.

Steve Bradbury boating a fairly rare Wolf fish too.
Always nice to see the more unusual species.

Nick Ball’s Cod just under 7lb is now the current leader of the Shy-Torque fish of the month where the winner wins a free trip. I did accidentally knock a Ling off the hook that was bigger! Oops, sorry Glenn!

All in all, a cracker of a day with great company and perfect weather to boot!

    Cheers for now,
    Rich

    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

The last couple of trips have seen two completely different approaches.

I had three friends join me last week for a days Lure Fishing tight inside, under the cliffs. We didn’t know if the water would be clear enough yet, but we certainly got some fish on the flood tide. Pollack and Codling took a selection of metal lures, shads and Jellyworms for a few hours, which was great sport. I also saw my first Minky Whale of the year, so the Herring must be on their way.

Today we had a great bunch of lads on and with a tide just below 5m, we headed off early so we could get in two slack waters to maximise time on the wrecks, where there has been a better stamp of fish recently.
It was worth going out early, as we got a few Codling to 4lb in the boxes by the time the Ebb finished.

We then ran out to the seven mile rough ground for a few hours drift fishing. We didn’t take anything enormous, but there were plenty of bites each drift from Codling, Haddock, Ling, Whiting, Pouting and a solo Scorpion Fish.

We ran back inside for the second slack, but the wrecks we picked didn’t produce much at all. I took us to the three mile ground to finish off and pleasingly, we found a few pockets of fish. Biggest fish of the day was a Ling of 9lb 4oz, but after that we were down to 4lb Codling.

Nothing much to write home about, but everyone got a few to take home and I really enjoyed the company. With falling tides the next few days, and some settled weather, hopefully we’ll manage to find a few.

  • 05/06/2023 Fishing Report by Andy Savage on Sea Urchin IIl (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

5 Jun 2023 by Andy Savage

    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

A day out on the Spring Tides today with a fantastic group of lads.

As reported previously, we’ve struggled to find any bigger fish on the areas of rough ground around Whitby in recent trips. To be fair, today was no different…..The bigger Spring Tides find us fishing the rough ground for the majority of the day because the boat drifts too fast to catch off the wrecks.

Today we ran out and dropped straight on an inshore wreck as the tide was fairly slack. We got 2-3 Codling for a few drifts, but then the Ebb Tide pushed through and made the drift too fast to continue. Muppet bait traces, baited with a whole Squid accounted for all the fish, and pleasingly, the lads using my hire tackle, got to grips with things quickly and got off the mark.

Once the tide was away, we ran out to the seven mile ground first, for a handful of small Codling and Haddock; then went out another couple of miles to lose as much tide as possible. The sport was patchy, but we did find one consistent area that fished ok for an hour. Plenty of bites from small Codling and Haddock kept things ticking over.

Just after dinner we committed and ran back inside to catch the second slack water. We fished four wrecks during the last two hours. Three of them were pretty rubbish, but the last one saved the day, giving a few fish a drift. Some nice Codling, with the biggest of 7lb falling to Peter Koska.

A big thank you to everyone for coming today. Everyone got a few to take home, with the exception of Gordon Carter, who was on his first trip on Sea Urchin. Seasoned angler Gordon explained that he has had “new boat” bad luck before…..unfortunately he drew a blank today, but was excellent company nonetheless. Revenge is sweet Gordon..unfinished business.

  • 04/06/2023 Fishing Report by Nick Gough on Skylark (Scarborough, North Yorkshire)

4 Jun 2023 by Nick Gough

    Report on-board Skylark

Photos from today's 6 hour trip

Nice to be finally back at sea again with the sea conditions we've been having recently

Overall everybody caught a sizable cod to take home some even had 4 to 5 each.

As Well as the cod we had a few Pollock, coalfish, wrasse, pouting and lesser spotted dogfish

Best baits today seamed to be feathers tipped with squid.

We did get the occasional fish on the shads so it showing signs of the water clearing.

As the video earlier showed we had a good amount of dolphins as we steamed to our first mark.

  • 03/06/2023 Fishing Report by Andy Savage on Sea Urchin IIl (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

3 Jun 2023 by Andy Savage

    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

I’ve done three trips since I last did a report and there is a good reason for that……The fishing has been far from brilliant for us and the fish we have been getting have been on the small side, with only a couple of fish over 5lb.

We’ve currently got Northerly winds coming at us, but they haven’t been massive, so we’ve got a few trips in. The actual fishing conditions haven’t been perfect, with the anglers having to combat lines streaming a bit at certain points of the day.

We’ve fished wrecks and rough ground, catching fish from both, but not in the numbers and size I hoped for. There are plenty of bites to be had on the rough ground from small Codling, Haddock and Ling but the better size fish just don’t seem to have arrived yet. A few “Scout” Mackerel also came off the 5 Mile ground.

All methods are catching as the water clears out. Hokkai’s baited with Squid have dominated the rough ground and bait traces with Squid on the wrecks. Shads are catching plenty for the anglers who choose to use them from ground and wrecks.

With the lack of decent fish, it’s a bit of a non-report, but I like to let everyone know what’s going on. As Del Trotter says..…..it’s not all Champagne and Skittles!! Tomorrow is another day and we always hope for a few decent fish.

Thanks to all the anglers who have joined me for a day out, your support is greatly appreciated.

  • 31/05/2023 Fishing Report by Rich Cope on Mistress (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

31 May 2023 by Rich Cope

    Report on-board Mistress

Summer is finally on its way! We sailed into the expected shabby sea that was forecast this morning, it was forecast to ease by lunch and it did

As we left the pier ends I noticed a lot of birds wheeling and diving, also the water was looking a lot clearer than it has for weeks, so I got the lads to rig some feathers for a drop at the bouy.

We had 2 drifts and managed 4 codlings, a pollock a billet and a solitary mackerel! We have been seeing plenty of midwater marks the last few weeks so we've been expecting the mackerel any time.

The tides are starting to lift again but theyre still on the small side, along with the breeze I headed straight to piece of ground that fishes well on these tides, we picked away steady till the tide eased then visited a few of my favourite wrecks until the tide started pushing then returned to ground again.

The fishing was steady away all day taking fish on a mixture of shads, bait and baited muppet and hokkai rigs. The baited rigs taking the majority of the fish.we took a fair few species too, cod, ling, haddock, mackerel, coalie, pollock, ballan wrasse, and tub gurnard.

I was kept fairly busy with the net all day but was surprised at the end of the day to see most of the lads had around a dozen fish a piece, best lad kept about 15, plenty of throw backs too, we finished with a tally of 70-80 codlings to keep, so it turned out to be a pretty good day for the lads.

If you fancy a trip with me please give me a call on 07977 436 903, if I dont answer please leave a text or WhatsApp and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

    Tight lines Rich
