Report on-board Celtic Wildcat

The forecast was exactly as it was predicted for the last few days. Part of a weekend of fine fine weather, and breathless winds made for a very nice day out on board Celtic Wildcat with skipper Nick.

The 18 mile journey to our destination, which for today was the Shoals sandbank off St. Govans were we would target Bass, but probably pick up a few other species as well. Now given that the trips for Bass are done in very fast tides, to give every different type of bait or lure the best action to attract fish, Nick had to work hard to ensure there were no tangles on the boat. He did this by managing which side of the boat dropped first, second and when to wind in. This worked well all day and there were very few tangles considering the tide rip...

The fishing, well the Bass fishing started slow. The first fish in the boat was a Turbot, not just any Turbot... a Turbot caught on a small white Redgill. This raised eyebrows around the boat as Turbot normally feed on sight as well as scent. It was a very welcome sight for Dangler Barry.

The drifts were fast, again because of the tide and the best part of the drift is short we were back and for over the bank a lot. Being new to using braid, I was amazed at how bumpy the sand bank is, I was told that the ripples in the sand were much bigger out here than conventional beach sand ripples. This paired with the sensitivity given by the braid and light rod made it difficult to distinguish bites.

Paul didn't have to much trouble spotting the first Bass of the day engulf his Sidewinder Lure and go like stink... up it came, a healthy looking Bass and the first of the day for the boat.

The next Bass to come on board fell to Ian, who was fishing a rubber sand eel on a flowing trace. Another perfect plate size Bass.

Shortly after Ian had landed his Bass, I hooked into a Bass using my new 440 Sakuma Circle hooks which I were very impressed with as per the hook up in the picture below. The lure I used was a Kiddy Holographic Sandeel. It was a perfect size Bass for the pot, which I filleted and skinned shortly after boating it.

Meanwhile, as I was playing my fish Janice had hooked into one much bigger than mine. It was caught on the same setup Ian was using, again a lure similar to the one I had mine. Janice sure showed the guys how to fish today, bagging the biggest Bass of the day at 4lb 4oz.

The action on the sand bank had appeared to dropped off. I had a Gurnard, and there were a few Weevers caught around the boat as well as some Codling on the bank. We moved off to some rougher ground, and on went the hokkais and jelly worms in an attempt to pick up some Pollack and Cod. There was plenty of action on the water with Dolphins and Gannets going after fish that weren't to far below the surface. The action wasn't too bad on the boat either. A few Pollack came on board, as well as a few undersize Codling but they were welcome for sport.

I missed a cracking take on my Blue Silver Dream hokkai's. But had a few small Pollack of my own to keep the fishing ticking over. Also on the rough ground we managed too hook into some fairly sizeable Launce. These were kept alive until we went back over the sand bank where we could try for more Bass.

I think we managed maybe one or two more Bass, all keepers that I didn't manage to get pictures off. But we did however boat a few more Turbot. Barry had another one, again a keeper this time caught on squid strip.

Yorkie also managed one, as did I on fresh Launce fillet. I fished mine on a long flowing trace made of 20lb Fluro Carbon with a 440 Circle Hook. Its a new species for me and boy did it taste great!!!

Shortly after our return to the sand bank we made for home, reflecting on a day that could have been better on the Bass front but with spectacular weather, a few Turbot, good tea and coffee (Ma's Drizzle Cake again) and hard work from skipper Nick we had a cracking day. A total of 8 species too... Bass, Launce, Turbot, Pollack, Codling, Coalfish, Gurnard and Weever.

    Report on-board Supreme

Myself,Dad, Stuart, John, Mick and Tom booked a trip out on Supreme 2 charter boat out of Rhyl, after keeping an eye on the forecast all week, it seemed the weather gods were on our side for a change.

Called the skipper the night before to confirm the trip was on, Stuart, kindly offered to take us in the 8 seater taxi, well we thought it was kind till the cheeky swine put the meter on ...................... no, fare play to him it was a good crack going down in a taxi, wouldn't like to pay a real taxi, £272 there ONLY!, shocking you taxi drivers!!!!

First stop was the cafe for some hot bacon and sausage, and then headed down to the slip, Prior to boarding the vessel we decided to throw £2 each in a pot for the biggest fish of the day to add a bit of fun.

Met Steve the skipper at the slip way at 8:30, set sail in lovely seas.

Our first stop was for mackeral................... plenty of them about,

Soon had the bucket full,............................ Well some of us did the" tangle twins" spent more time hockie knitting

With plenty of bait it was time to move to our first mark about 7miles off shore, where we were fishing a sandy bottom at about 60ft managed to catch dabs, gurnad, and scad

    .

.... oh and Stuart managed to catch some mackerel already tinned

With the tide and wind on our side the skipper decided to try a wreck about 11mile off shore, so upped anchor and headed out

Had a few drifts over it, and caught cod, ling, pouting

Steve dropped the pin so we could fish it at anchor, the fishing was excellent, everybody was catching, whilst Steve were heating up some nice pasties, and making a brew.

As the guy across from me caught a conger, my plan was to catch myself one.............. So on with the mackerel flapper,............... soon after i was into a good fish, got it to the boat but unfortunately it slipped the hook before we could boat it,.................... estimated at 20lb, If you watch the video you can hear Stuart jinx me, He shouted "Its gone"

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TP3iX4pkM44

I think he was just annoyed because the old wreck would not budge from the sea bed,.................... dont think it ever will now, the amount of lead he put in it.................... Ahh well I thought I'm still in with a chance for the pool with my cod, only to get thrashed by john with this 7lb 2oz ling

The ten hour trip was worth every penny of £38, the skipper was excellent he put us right on to the fish, between us we managed 13 species and all managed to bring some good fish home.

The craic was unbelievable ,never laughed so much, the weather was glorious and I will definitely be booking another trip,

Here is a few more pictures of the day, and the video of my conger?

what do you guys think? can i say i caught a one?

  • 16/07/2011 Fishing Report by Aaron Smith on Bad Boyz VI (Holyhead, Isle of Anglesey)

16 Jul 2011 by Aaron Smith

    Report on-board Bad Boyz VI

Its been a couple of weeks till my last report but with fishing so much its hard to keep up to date.

The inshore reefs are producing plenty of Pollack, Coalies,Codling, Ballens, Cuckoos and Mackeral whislt the slighty deeper reefs around 4-5miles off are seing plenty of Pollack and Cod from 3lb to 12lb.

Manage a couple of days out to Holyhead deeps this past weekend with different results both days, one producing only a couple of Tope and Spurdog to the next day being crazy with Tope, Spurdog and Huss and during slack water ATEMPTING to catch Whitting and Mackeral for bait was a total mess becuase of the amount of Tope attacking the fiss on the feathers.

The inshore banks and mud troughs are fishing well for Spotty,Thornback and blonde rays and plenty of the usual suspects from Dogs, Dabs, Whitting, Codling, Huss, Red gurnard, Tub gurnard, Grey gurnard and a odd Plaice.

Big tides and mixed weather this weekend but we did manage yesterdays trip for Cod and Pollack with very good results up to 8lb but todays weather was not the best but we fished locally in the Holyhead bay which produced the normal suspects.

  • 07/2011 Fishing Report by Gethyn Owen on My Way 2 (Holyhead, Isle of Anglesey)

    Jul 2011 by Gethyn Owen

    Report on-board My Way 2

It has been 4 weeks now since we have found the time to write a report on our most recent fishing exploits. We have though managed the most basic of website tasks in keeping the website updated with photographs and boat availability, sadly despite planning, daily or even weekly reports, time gets restricted and fishing comes first! More importantly in recent weeks, the weather has been far kinder and My Way has set sail on all but a couple days.

This report starts in the middle of June when, we had a short period of cleaning and tying rigs owing to bad weather, so not really an awful lot to write about for those few days, moving swiftly on we were joined by a good crowd of seasoned mariners from Telford who despite the blustery conditions of large tides made the most of their time with us bagging a variety of species including a few pb smoothies, spotted ray and a first ever bull huss.

The weather the following week tried it’s best once again to put the dampeners on our plans to sail, un deterred we set sail regular and our anglers were rewarded once again with an excellent mixed bag of inshore fish ranging from the ever present lesser spotted dogfish to 18lb smoothies and a great array of pb’s and angling firsts.

It is also always a pleasure to take anglers out on their first time fishing, when planning days like this I much prefer medium to big tides, thus keeping us inshore, the water flowing and allowing us to help the angler get the most from both drift and anchor fishing. Putting someone new onto a mixed bag of species has a great effect on them and certainly helps heightens their desire for more.

It is always a pleasure to take anglers out on their first time fishing, when planning days like this I much prefer medium to big tides, thus keeping us inshore, the water flowing and allowing us to help the angler get the most from both drift and anchor fishing. Putting someone new onto a mixed bag of species has a great effect on them and certainly helps heightens their desire for more.

We were joined on a Sunday by My Way regulars from The Wirral, this report requires a page of its own to be honest.

For the 4th year running the RAF Angling Festival was fished from Holyhead. This festival partners an RAF angling enthusiast with a complete novices. The aim is to encourage more RAF personnel to take up the sport and join in the fun both on a boat and also ashore. This year the event was won by an angler who was fishing aboard My Way!

With rods, reels and rigs planned for the day, Rob caught steadily a mixed bag of fish learning how to bait up and the different methods to entice different species of fish as he went along. With the event returning sometime in 2012, it will be nice to see if Rob has continued with angling and been promoted to competent angler.

Making our way into July – the sun was beating down, the seas were flat calm, My Way was fully booked and all this could mean only thing – spring tides! Seldom this year have we had such calm conditions on neap tides when a foray into Holyhead Deep has been in the plans!

Never the less, large tides and calm weather simply offers us the chance to move around inshore and fish many marks for a variety of species. Drifting is something we do an awful lot of; pollack, codling and the various species of the wrasse family all our main targets. Whereas the pollack and codling are not monsters that you’d associate with offshore wrecking, ranging from a couple lb to around 6lb, with the odd bigger fish – they make for an interesting fight on light gear and relatively shallow water.

Moving into July we are still seeing the odd smoothie landed on My Way, Rob Field fish with us recently and smashed his pb twice with hounds of 13 and 18lb, more reliable inshore are the huss, with Specimens often exceeding the 10lb threshold for a quality huss.

July the 4th was another day to remember! With it being a day that people in the USA celebrate the declaration of Independence from the UK, we decided to pay our own tribute and celebrate ... My Way style. Yes, this meant only one thing Fish & Food, so it was off we set in bright sunshine whilst waiting for our breakfast of big thick ¼lber burgers to cook.

Fishing did interrupt our food at times as doggies, huss, gurnard, whiting, dabs etc came aboard My Way from the 30ft spring tide. It was soon lunch time and I had planned some great big US of A hot dogs. Pete Chant, originally from Holyhead and now living on the Wirral brought along a massive pan of chilli – chilli dogs it was.

As every munched down for lunch we made our way around to Trearddur Bay where drifting for wrasse and pollack made the agenda once again. Then on the sail home we rounded USA day aboard My Way with jam donuts and caawwfeee! Superb, great fishing, great food and certainly a great laugh – Oh yeah, Pete brought digestives!!!!!!!!!

With July now in full swing our attentions were turning to fishing Holyhead Deep, where Monsters of the Deep where rumoured to be found. I say rumoured as the weather of late had failed to allow us to get out to these sacred grounds, our last venture being the end of April, although we did pass on a few chances early June in favour of smoothhounds inshore, with the deep waters west of Holyhead scheduled to produce the goods well into October, this was a decision easily made with the quality of hounds around this year. Our first trip to the deeps was a non-starter, the strong NW wind that blew the night before left a horrible swell in the sea, so it was the mussel beds and inshore species hunting the order of the day huss, rays, various wrasse plus many more giving all reasonably good day afloat.

Fortunately though, the sea dropped off for the following day and inshore anchor, drifting and then the Holyhead Deep it was.
The deep waters off Holyhead didn’t disappoint, for little over 3 hours all the rods aboard My Way bent double time and time again with numerous huss and spurdog, all of which averaged 12 to 14lb amazing and hectic fishing.

Only one tope though graced us with its presence that day, this fell to the hook of Pete Minns, normally the dogfish king, Pete was on fire with a tope of 22lb, spurs to 14lb and huss to 12lb; finally the lessons are paying off!

This report ends with the good weather continuing during the neap tides seeing My Way take part in the filming of the Welsh language fishing show Sgota!

The original series screened in 2010 was a roaring success with many anglers both Welsh speaking and those viewing with English subtitles, raving about the quality of fishing and excellent presenting and information when compared with other angling related programs of late.

The 2nd series is now being filmed and titled Sgota: The Islands of Western Britain.

    Report on-board Excel 2

Evening bass trips are proving a rip roaring success with good numbers of bass being landed including a couple of low doubles so far.

During our normal daytime trips we are seeing good numbers of cracking Cod upto 15lb on the wrecks. A few pollock are showing but these are tending to be smaller, 4 to 8 lb.

Tope are still here and will be untill the autumn if you want to do battle with leviathans from the deep !
A party from Essex had 16 upto 55 lb to the boat. They now know where to come for the best sportfishing in the SouthEast !

Inshore we're still getting the big hounds, upto 20lb !
Bass and skate are showing in good numbers to fresh mackeral bait. Quite satisfying at the moment to go out, catch your own bait , then catch a good fish supper !

    Keep it tight,
