Meerkat charters heading to Portishead
View Boats Page
Meerkat is a well known charter boat what has been based out of Weymouth for the past 13 years and with the skipper/ owner Ryan for the past 9 of them years.
This winter 2023/2024 we have decided to have a change of scenery and head to the Bristol Channel to fish for the Cod run and Rays from the 1st of December 2023 till the 26th of March 2024.
With the boat being 36ft long and 13ft Wide we offer a massive amount of deck space what will be able to fish 8 people extremely comfortably. Seats inside and out for everyone to have the option to sit down as we are travelling to the marks or waiting for those bites, Heated wheelhouse to keep ourselves warm on those cold winter days as well.
We will also be offering Hot dogs for lunch plus plenty of tea/ coffee through out the day.
If you haven’t got up tiding gear don’t worry cause we will have 8 full sets ready to go but also the Normal down tide gear works as well. Main bait will be Rag/Lug and squid.
We are hoping there will be free street parking available.
Looking forward to a change
As we can all tell Meerkat is coming to Portishead from Weymouth so this is a massive change of waters with new marks/ tides and style of fishing but we have got this covered. This winter we met up with a very good mate Mike with Teddie Boy charters to show us the general area and to get a few days fishing in ourself whilst giving me the chance to learn the tide and area, what turned into a brilliant few days.
But don’t be concerned about the change Ryan has been fishing since a kid learning many different styles and areas through his years in match fishing, big specimen hunting and of course boat fishing from many different marines so we are looking forward to taking on the Bristol Channel.

on Meerkat (Portishead, Somerset)
Apr 2023 by Ryan Casey
Report on-board Meerkat
We have decided this winter to move Meerkat away from Weymouth and go chase the Bristol Channel Cod/ Rays and base the boat in Portishead, what is located just off the M5 so an easy drive from all direction.
View Boats Page
This far up in the Bristol Channel offers loads of shelter from all directions of wind so we are more likely to get out fishing in more wind unlike Weymouth in the winter months, Even in the high winds because of the amount of land surrounding the Channel and the shallow waters, this helps the seas to stay calm so more time out there finding those Cod.
The fishing (Cod/ Rays)
Cod fishing in the Bristol Channel best way to describe it is you are shore fishing but on a comfy boat instead of climbing in the mud/ rocks. Well and Meerkats lovely hot kettle going all the time.
Main way is up-tiding with big worm and squid bait, Followed by patients and fresh baits every 15-20 minutes. You can still down tide as the water is shallow even in the fast tides a 12oz/1lb lead will bounce back nicely in the 20ft of water.
With Meerkat being such a big deck space we are hoping you can even fish 2 rods if your happy to bring enough bait for this. You’d have the option to have 1 up-tiding and 1 down tide to give you the best chance.
The biggest thing to remember this is Cod fishing so it can be slow and a patient’s game at times but also can be rewarding Almost like Turbot fishing. So please don’t expect massive numbers of Cod all the time and treat it as a day out away from work. Meerkat Will have a full set of 8 up-tiding gear so if you haven’t got the gear you haven’t got to worry.

Report on-board Our Joe - L
2 BRITISH CONGER CLUB GOLD MEDALS CAUGHT IN ONE DAY (97lb 14oz & 86lb) AND WINNERS OF DART FISHING FESTIVAL ! ! !
View Boats Page
Fishing aboard OUR JOE - L with a group of anglers, mainly members of the British Conger Club. The main target? Conger Eels!!!
The weather didn’t help for the first couple of days as we were forced into staying inshore to fish the Skerries Bank for Rays although we had a great number of rays the best fish was only a blonde of 21lb. This gave us a great opportunity to stock up on bait for our main event on the Wrecks.
The forecast was looking good until the night before when about 12-15 knot’s of east wind over a small flood tide was looking inevitable for the day. Setting off from the River Dart in the early hour darkness to fish through the night and catch the ebb with the wind instead.
The lads were baiting up and I dropped anchor as Paul Cashmore reminded me that he and Kevin Turner had entered the British Conger Club Interport competition for the day. Now that has been known to curse the days fishing for plenty of conger fishermen in the past as you only have one day a year you can enter this.
After Our Joe - L settled at anchor I was confident the positioning over the wreck was right and the lines were falling away in the tide at a comfortable trajectory. Bait, Location & tide were bang on and I suppose the angers weren’t half bad either so the boat was filled with confidence from the off. First bite was a small conger released at the side followed by Paul Maris smiling and saying “I think you’ll need the net for this one Shaun!”
Me with the brand new net in hand we all saw a fine eel surface after 2 or 3 dives pulling 20lb of drag on Paul's Shimano Talica II speed Reel. It took two of us to lift the net in and with the fish now on the deck we all smiled and said ‘That’s the one we came for!’ and only the second eel of the day.
After a bit of breakfast, a couple of cups of tea and a bit of T-baring smaller eels off for me. Kevin Turner was into another half decent eel that surfaced along way from the boat and dived down again. A shorter run than the eel of Paul’s but this fish was pulling faster for sure. Kevin done well to stop the fish going too deep for a second time and on the second surface we could clearly see this was bigger than Paul’s, who up until now thought he had the biggest of the year for the BCC (British Conger Club). With Kevin’s rolling out of the net onto the deck of Our Joe - L you could see the size difference and was looking close to the magic 100lb!
As the tide eased it was time to up anchor and move to fish for ling and bream on the drift with slightly awkward conditions. We started our drifts on the second wreck and another boat came over to drift to but with the lads all having a bit of a break I thought we should shift inshore to give the tide time to turn for another go at some eels If we could settle at anchor. So far we had a couple of decent eels for the Dart Fishing Festival for Kevin & Paul M and also Kevin and Paul C were half way to a good score for the BCC interport with Kevin’s Eel, weight yet unknown.
Dropping the anchor with a small flood tide against 15knots of wind I said to the Anglers, you’ll get a couple of short windows of fishing before we’ll swing off and I will have to reposition the boat again. During the 3 windows we stayed Paul C managed to hook and surface a half decent eel of 42lb that got released at the side of the boat. Job Done!!!
Results time.
The anticipated weigh in time with plenty of interest in our two fish boxes came. Paul Maris Personal best eel for the year going 86lb and winning ‘Best Fish From Wreck’. Kevin Turners personal best Conger going 96lb 14oz winning ‘Best Fish overall’ ‘Best Conger Eel’ and ‘Best Fish of the Day’ as well as smashing the Best Eel so far in 2022 for the BCC by 25lb! This also confirmed the combined weight for Paul C and Kevin’s interport entry going 138lb 14oz. Happy Days.
Credit goes to the Anglers, they put their faith in me as a Charter Skipper when they book ‘Our Joe - L’ and this group always fish as a team in these competitions. Everyone aboard was happy to be on the boat when these fish were caught which as a skipper makes things a lot easier. Well done to Paul Maris & Kevin Turner on this occasion for hooking a couple of magnificent eels and thanks to Steve Batchelor at Stainless Steve engineering for making up the Conger Net at short notice after my last one broke. With one of his excellent nets aboard, a gaff really is a thing of the past!UPCOMING INDIVIDUAL SPACES ONBOARD Our Joe - L

Report on-board Mistress Linda
After a run of not pleasant weather this year spring has finally arrived, fishing in the last few weeks has been hard but when we have managed to get offshore the Spurdogs have given us some good sport. Last week due to more wind we had to fish inshore and had a great day for March on the Bream with 31 being landed which was a very pleasant bonus along with Plaice, Wrasse, Goby’s and the usual dogs and straps. Last Sunday the forecast was for sunshine all day which eventually showed up around 16.00 as we came ashore fishing was difficult WB it again the Bream saved the day landing a respectable 21 Bream along with lots of eels. If you would like a day enjoying the sporting quality of the Bream I have plenty of singles trips coming up you can join in on.

Bumper weather along with BUMPER fishing.
Today saw Spot On and it’s crew head out in lovely calm conditions and glorious ’summer’ sunshine.
A couple of wrecks in and and BOOM! It was on, the quality of the fish was very good with lots of double figure prime pollock coming in for the lads every drift.
The day was safe to say great with everyone aching and plenty of fillets for all.
Biggest fish fell to Tim Phillips with a fine specimen pollock of 16lb 4oz.
This was a trip that will be remembered that’s for sure! ️
A big thanks to #sidewinderlures once again for there deadly Skerries eels which did the damage today that’s for sure.

Fishing Report by Matt Forrester
on Silver Halo (Torquay, Devon)
Mar 2023 by Matt Forrester
Report on-board Silver Halo
So after a year out it's been good to get back to my boat Silver Halo and into the fishing in the UK.
View Boats Page
Since being back I've been busy readying Silver Halo for her 5th coding and survey so much of March has mostly been work off the water, but now we're ready to fish and it's all down to the weather!
I've only managed to get out 3 times so far, fishing the wrecks with lures and jigs with mixed results but generally very positive overall.
We've had an amazing half dayer and two tougher full days, both with strong winds against tide, still some positive results with pollock to 18lb and cod to 7lb. Lots of smaller pollock are close to the 8lb mark but we've had a few bigger fish.
Most fish taken on the large green Sidewinder Skerries eels, other favourites have been the smaller 4" version, white and the black glitter Sidewinder sandeels. I also have a new set of jigs that I'm trailing over here and so far I've tried 2 patterns, 1 failed the test but 1 has passed with flying colours!! More time now needed to test the others.
Please keep an eye on my face book page and group for trip updates and short notice spaces, many thanks Matt.UPCOMING INDIVIDUAL SPACES ONBOARD Silver Halo
