    Report on-board Sea Urchin IIl

It's been quite a while since I've put up a catch report. For the last couple of weeks either the weather or the tides have been rubbish. Checking my diary; I did my last trip on the 30th July which wasn't great due to the amount of swell we had to battle with and then today was my next opportunity.

Even today's trip was a 50/50 affair. With a building 5m tide and an offshore breeze, it looked like it was destined to be a difficult day. I'm not one for punishing anglers in poor conditions, so I gave everyone the option of coming or not; explaining that we would probably have to spend a lot of the day fishing hard inside, to get some relief from the wind (fishing hard inside is fantastic, but you need water clarity and feeding fish to make it a good day). Having not been to sea for a week, I didn't know what the clarity levels etc were.

A couple dropped out, but seven lads were still happy to come and have a day out. We had a stop at the Bell Buoy to see if there were any Mackerel kicking about and thankfully we got enough for bait in a couple of drifts. With the tide being fairly slack, I took us to try a nearby wreck as the winds were light and the lines weren't streaming. Over the next hour, we tried a couple of wrecks with squid and mackerel muppet traces. We had an odd fish or two. Mainly small Ling and Codling plus a few Pouting. As the tide began to build and the drift speed increased, we pushed to the three mile ground to try our luck.

The westerly wind was increasing in strength giving white water all around us, but the Ebb tide matched it well and meant that the lines weren't streaming at all. We had the lines fairly straight up and down which was good. Each drift on the ground we picked up a couple of fish, but sport wasn't prolific by any stretch. Mainly small Codling, with just a few to keep. After an hour, with the lines still fairly vertical, I gambled on a push out to the five mile ground to see if we could find a better stamp of fish. Unfortunately that wasn't the case. We had similar results to the three mile ground. An odd small Codling and a few strap Ling.

With the wind due to build and the tide to turn, there was no way I was going any further out, so I pointed us inshore and ran back in to try another patch of ground (for nothing at all as it turned out). Plan B was definitely required, so with a freshening wind, we ran back in towards Robin Hoods Bay to try the ground hard inside. The tide was almost slack when we arrived, but we picked up a few Codling over the next half an hour on baited Hokkai's, plus some Kamikaze Mackerel. We then dropped tight inside to get the first of the Flood Tide and for half an hour we got a few more fish, including four Pollack which all came with fifteen minutes of each other while the Flood Tide was building. Annoyingly, the Pollack all came to baited traces, despite two of us working hard with the Shads....the fish clearly didn't read the rule book!!

Unfortunately, once the tide got up to speed, the fish pretty much stopped feeding and sport dried up. We worked our way back up towards Hawsker, but to almost nothing other than Mackerel. We agreed to call it a day an hour earlier than usual, as it seemed futile just drifting for nothing.

All the lads were great company and stuck at it all day. I couldn't deliver the trip I had hoped to, but the company and chat made the day pass quickly. Thanks lads, really appreciate you coming for the day out. See you next time....

  • 08/08/2025 Fishing Report by Scott Belbin on Galloper (Brightlingsea, Essex)

8 Aug 2025 by Scott Belbin

    Report on-board Galloper

We had a break from the bass fishing offshore the other day. After seeing quite a lot over the past few weeks some of us might have overdosed on bass.
We planned a run off to 'the land of no fish ' where we can catch anything and everything.
To be honest it was a bit nautical out there but the forecast was to decrease.
Considering the conditions we we comfortable and able to fish nicely.
Mackerel are normally abundant off there but I reckon the weather had broken them up a bit. Thankfully we found enough for bait and a few jumbos for dinner too.
The bottom fishing could have been better to start with. We had some gurnards throughout the day. Mostly tubs but a decent red gurnard for Stanley too.
The lads were very pleased to see several dogfish though as I think they have been missing them lately!
Over slack we tried a different mark and had pouting, scad, mackerel and whiting. The conditions weren't really ideal for here though as the drift was too fast.
Once the tide was back underway we decided to go a little further to another area for a few drifts. With the turn of the tide came the sunshine and the wind dropped away.
We had a few lovely drifts on this mark catching lots of greater weaver fish, gurnard, mackerel and more including a cuttlefish for Kevin. We didn't get the turbot we hoped for but everything felt right. We were tempted to put another drift in but instead decided to head home and stop for bass on the way. The wreck we stopped on was alive with them and in two short drifts we had our quota to end a lovely day.
I'm hoping to head off there again soon. This is a great place for different species and although things like the greater weaver are common there anything is possible. We've had all sorts over the years.
If you want to join us for a trip like this, general trip, offshore bass from brightlingsea or even tuna fishing from Falmouth please get in touch.

  • 07/08/2025 Fishing Report by Nick Gough on Skylark (Scarborough, North Yorkshire)

7 Aug 2025 by Nick Gough

    Report on-board Skylark

First we had a 8hr trip starting at 8am

Winds were quite fresh off land but sea was finally flat after having quite alot of days ashore.

Headed out strait away found a good patch of mackerel with a mix of smallish Pollock showing.

First drift this morning on the Mackerel

As slack water approach we kept moving to try and get back on the fish again.

Best fish today and also taking the lead on the heaviest fish of August Competition was a Pollock weighing 7lb 1oz which is a good start.

Everybody caught something to keep with plenty to put back to fight another day.

On the trip plenty of seals and porpoise sighted.

3 hour trip leaving at 4pm
Was productive from the start with mackerel and Pollock been boated.

Overall everyone caught something to keep with majority of the anglers been new anglers.

Species caught over the two trips

Cod, Pollock, coalfish, ballen wrasse, pouting, whiting, and a weaver,

Aboard Lady of the Lake 3 – Sussex Offshore Fishing Charters

    What. A. Day.

We locked out at 0630 with a crew of 8 aboard Lady of the Lake 3 and were absolutely blessed with the weather – perfect conditions for an inshore reef session.

There was a big decision to be made this morning – offshore or inshore. The last two days it’s blown up out there, so we played it smart and stayed inshore... and we 100% made the right call.

Dropped the pick and fished the flood for a solid 3 hours, then drifted over the ebb and repositioned the other side of the mark. From first drop to last – non-stop action. Proper bream fest, with some stunning red mullet in the mix and even a big smoothhound to top it off. Couldn’t have asked for better.

And the crew? Absolutely brilliant – easily one of the best charters I’ve had the pleasure of skippering (actually no, scrap that... definitely one of the best).

The lads fancied a little drift for plaice and a few mackerel to finish, so we steamed a mile inshore – and boom – more bream! Couldn’t get away from them. A few macks showed, no plaice this time, but the banter was flowing and the laughs were non-stop.

Biggest bream (a proper slab!) went to the young lad from the party of 3 – nicely done!

Also – a massive thank you to everyone who’s taken the time to leave me those 5-star Google reviews. It really means a lot. As a skipper, it’s my job to make sure your day’s enjoyable, safe, and memorable – and reading your kind words honestly makes it all worth it.

And to those of you who rebooked straight after we docked – thank you again! That says it all. Looking forward to getting you back out there.

    Cheers all – tight lines!
    Jamie

We've still been seeing some cracking bass offshore recently. These two came on worm baits but we had some on lures too. Fish ranging from undersized to these lovely fish on this trip and a few other bits and bobs too including hounds. The tides are building nicely again now and I look forward to finding more bass, hounds and more over the coming weeks.
