    Report on-board Skerry Belle

Well what a wonderfull day treated to a glorius autumn sunrise at Ramsgate Kent On the Skerry Belle Charter Boat with Roger Lennon and a mixed crew of new faces and all of us keen to get onto the magnificent fish that this area offers. First mark targeting skate using a basic Portland rig with 1.5m trace rigged pennel style and two 6/0 Aberdeen hooks, bait were chunks of herring nothing fancy just cut the head off and cut into three chunks and discard the tail. First drop a small ray, then another along the boat and a codling not a bad start. More rays and the usual dogs kept us active until the tide died away and so did the fish. So a move to deeper water and see if we could find some Cod, with slackwater and no tide it took a while to kick off and the rays started coming thick and fast, David Zippy Long after a lot of effort earlier started landing some nice size rays and similar so did others and I was getting a fish a chuck virtualy. I put a second uptide rod out and that saw plenty of action with both rods into fish at one stage. So I can claim the honours as top rod catch wise and heaviest fish at 11.5lbs oh and a new PB for me in the time it took me to eat two bacon sanwiches on a boat when inconsiderate fish kept jumping all over my baits !!! as to Cod well I suppose I will just have to go fishing Again to hit those ... Bummer Eh!

    Report on-board Silver Spray II

    October 2014 report

We have almost finished a large variety of our trips for the year and it will soon be time to settle into a couple months targeting the winter cod. Over the last few we weeks we have done the last of the bassing, wrecking and also our trips across the channel. The last trip over to Alderney surprised me with some of the calmest and warmest days of the year, not often you can get sun burnt in October. It was a brilliant 4 days with 19 species brought to the boat including the elusive couches sea bream. Not often these days we catch a species we haven’t had before and such a superb looking fish at that. Andrew Kennedy was the man of the hour catching 2 of them using an ounce bullet lead and a short flowing trace baited with squid head, the biggest weighing just over 2lb. The mid channel wrecks really produced a lot of big black bream this year with fish up to 5lb coming on most sessions. Along with these we have also had a few red bream which we haven’t seen for 5 years or so. Gerry Todd brought the first one ever onboard Silver Spray II which he thought was a scad. On the inshore side the shambles is fishing very well for turbot and plaice along with a wide variety of other species. One day recently we tried vertical jigging on inshore reef marks which was a first for us on Silver Spray and turned out to be brilliant sport. Using spinning rods and fixed spool reels the lads managed to catch 7 bass, a dozen or so monster wrasse and more pollock than you can shake a stick at. I’ve only spent a half day down off the Needles so far which produced plenty of congers rays and the first of the years whiting but I’m looking forward to heading down again soon and bagging our first winter cod.

The anchored sessions on Banks/Reefs are producing good Ray and Tope fishing along with lots of Congers also the Whiting are starting to show.Ian Slater landed his first ever Blonde Ray weighing about 7Ib and then followed that up with a whopping 26Ib 8oz Blonde Ray and of course new Personal Best.Whole Clamari Squid and Mackerel cocktails presented on pennel rigs of Sakuma Stinger 6/0 and 4/0 hooks are proving the most successful.

    Report on-board Flamer IV

The Reef and Bank fishing at anchor is producing some unexpected late Tope fishing with plenty of fish in the 10 to 30Ib bracket being caught and with some bigger fish being lost by biting through 100/150 Ib mono traces and some dodgey knot tying. Birthday boy Ray Seddon landed several Tope and is pictured with his biggest of the trip a 30 pounder. The successful baits being squid and mackerel either in cocktails or seperate.

    Report on-board Just Mary

Hi All ! Recent weekends trips have proved what a difference some Gales can do to the fishing ! A good day with Paul Cox and his mates from Bristol and Reading way produced catches of Conger Eels on Scad and Mackerel flappers caught on the way out to our mark. We also had some other typical Summer fish like Gurnards and Black Bream. Then a good blow.....Gales and heavy seas to keep the fleet at home and tied up. Then a weekend with a party celebrating their mate Bob Crow's birthday. We had four seasons in one day ! Left the Quay in bright Springlike Sunshine and flat seas, got to the open Sea and the rain belted down harder and harder as we crossed the Bay and passed Matt Rowe on 'Piscary' on Poole Rocks.....then visibility zero and intense Thunder and Lightning right above us followed by hailstones.....wow ! Tried for Mackerel on the Sadler, two drifts.....nothing.....so on to our first mark. Anchor in and Bingo ! Straight into Channel Whiting ! More of those at a steady pace during the day and a Conger and followed by a Bass ! Nice ! Fish coming in at a nice steady pace. Lads did well as they were all hire rods and my traces and my baiting up and showing them how it was done. Weather cleared, we could see 'Piscary' again about two miles inshore of us but no other Poole Charter boats, guess only a handful of us Skippers had ventured out. Sea was flat and Sun shone brightly, lovely ! Species then followed, Dogfish, small Smoothound, Pouting and more Channel Whiting coughing up Sprats ! Then wind got up again from the South West, tide turned so wind over tide and conditions less than ideal. Last hour bit slow but job done, never know after a blow just what the fishing will be like. Coloured water and fish feeding by scent alone so we use a little trick to help them find our baits and it worked ! A good day was had by all.....it says so on my Facebook page !.....'Onamission Charters'.....Cheers lads and Happy Birthday to Bob ! See you again sometime !
Thanks, Malc, Onamission Charters, 'Just Mary', Poole.

    Report on-board High Flyer 2

Forcast today of SW decided to head south of Lowestoft on the banks rather than Hemsby Hole as previous thoughts , wind against tide to start and a 2.8m tide raging through i was rather thinking fishing was going to be bit on the hard side! Had four first timers on the Flyer so no pressure, was on our mark within three quarters expecting to wait a while before the fish started feeding but straight away small codling onboard followed by few very tiny spotty dogs . The whiting were not quality fish like beginning of the week but todays were generally all small and returned to grow. Few more spotties through the day about a dozen, couple of flatties thrown in , no skate for us today or smoothounds which was strange. Ended up with 33 keeper codling average 2 to 3 pounds overall, returned quite a few smaller ones as well. Was a great start to the season for codling as we are in change over period water still warm really. Big thanks to Dave for catching too many, and all first timers on the Flyer Andy,Dan,Lawrie and Frank enjoyed the day men had a good result and thanks for washing down too! Todays results strengthen my belief we are going to have a good season this year hopefully bigger fish than previous years , looking forward to a bit of cold for once! All the best. Jon. High Flyer
