Report on-board Skylark

Not A Bad days Winter fishing.

set off at 11 am in glorious sunshine and the sea was like glass. when we got to our first mark of the day and dropped anchor we were greeted by a couple of porpoises passing. fishing was slow to start with then Owen got the first cod of the day, a 2 lb Cod which he decided to return back.

As fishing was slow we decided to move to another spot and we managed to get a few more Cod out all around 3 lb.

Dave Shaw managed to catch his first Codling which was just over 3lb.

it would of been nice to get a few more fish but it was a brilliant day to be out fishing as the weather was great and the company was even better, a great set of lads to fish with.

looking forward in taking you all out again

Nick

• 02/2014 Fishing Report by Kevin McKie on Size Matters (Craobh Haven, Argyll & Bute)

Feb 2014 by Kevin McKie

Report on-board Size Matters

Species caught: Cod, Dab, Flounder, Plaice, Thornback Ray, Whiting.

February started off very well with some nice Cod being caught in the Mersey, but towards the end of the month, the Cod fishing became patchy on some days and then good on others. The large shoals of Whiting that were present in the Mersey during the Winter have moved off-shore and the Cod will do the same over the course of the next few weeks. With the temperatures rising we’ve seen a few Thornback Rays, Plaice and Flounders being caught which shows that the Spring fish are starting to arrive.

Notable Charters:

February 7th seen a small group of anglers who hired the boat, landing 12 Cod between 2lb 8oz and 11lb 8oz. Included in this catch were Cod of 5lb 2oz, 5lb 4oz and 5lb 10oz, along with Whiting, Dabs and plenty of under-sized Codling.

February 11th was a full boat with a total of 11 Cod caught between 3lb and 11lb 4oz, along with Whiting, Dabs and plenty of under-sized Codling.

February 21st was another full boat with a total of 13 Cod caught from 3lb 2oz to 7lb 4oz, along with Dabs and plenty of under-sized Codling.

The Fish of the Month goes to Tom Aldwinckle with his first ever Cod at 11lb 4oz. Although Carl O’Neill caught the largest at 11lb 8oz, he kindly passed the prize onto Tom as this was his first ever Cod and Carl thought Tom deserved it more. Congratulations, Tom!

• 27/02/2014 Fishing Report by TERRY BATT on Vanishing Point-2 (Bradwell Marina, Essex)

27 Feb 2014 by TERRY BATT

Report on-board Vanishing Point-2

UP-DATE OF ARRIVAL OF VANISHING POINT-2

Hi Guys, just another up-date, as so many of you are phoning with the impending arrival of Vanishing Point-2 to her new berth at Bradwell marina in Essex, a port this new vessel has never seen..!!

Since her launch last year, she went directly to Barrow in Furness, to work out in the Irish sea, but it looks as though her work there is done now, and we are looking to start the homeward passage from the other side of the country around the 7th March, as that’s when the Caledonian canal is opened, so if you want to track her progress around that time, just go to AIS ships live and type in VANISHING POINT-2 and you will be able to watch our progress.

Once the boat is safely back in Bradwell, we will take a couple of weeks just to do some service work and prep her for her new role of Charter Fishing..!!! yay!! By putting all her fishing rod holders on, we like the stainless steel ones that fit on the gunnel’s, so it keeps the deck clear, and bait cutting facilities, and alike.

Then I would say, at the end of March we will be ready to start taking those long awaited bookings for you all, and give you a trip of a lifetime, where you really will be cruising at over 20 knots!!, and if the sea should chop up, you will hardly notice it as with the fine bow entry, she has wave piercing technology built into her structure, she goes straight through a 1 metre wave with virtually no effect from any angle, you won’t truly appreciate it until you have tried it, I know we didn’t.!!!..

Ok guy's, as I say just another up-date for you so you know where we are, and I didn’t think it fair to start taking bookings, only to have to let you down, that’s not how we rock..!

Look forward to seeing you all very soon, and get ready to be impressed..!!!! Tight Lines

Terry & Nicola…

• 22/02/2014 Fishing Report by Scott Belbin on Galloper (Brightlingsea, Essex)

22 Feb 2014 by Scott Belbin

Report on-board Galloper

last time I wrote on here was last summer and a lot has gone on since then.
briefly the autumn was ok with plenty of thornbacks about and loads of dogfish and whiting as you would expect. as usual there were a few summer species hanging around until late autumn and the odd cod showing from September time. however codling didn't show in number until the very end of October. i'm not sure what caused this blame it on what you like they were a little late but once they turned up they were in reasonable numbers and fairly steady. Of coarse there was the odd dud day mixed in but on the whole we have seen steady numbers right through until now. there was a brief cold spell around the start of December which started to thin the thornbacks out a little but when the temperature picked up they soon came back.
most of the codling have been fish of 2-4lbs the usual stamp for inshore although there have been a lot of 6-10 inch long codling about the past couple of weeks which is promising for this autumn when they should be back and around keep able size. as I mentioned earlier its been a notably mild winter compared to many of late which I think isn't a bad thing for the codling and a good thing for the thornbacks which have provided us with great sport and some sizable fish between the codling. there have been a lot of double figure rays coming out which unfortunately cant be said for the cod. I don't mind admitting I haven't seen one all season as yet but I have only managed one offshore trip due to the wind.as for the wind I cant complain much as I'm sure many other ports have suffered a lot worst than us. there has been many I time when we have been grateful to be out and thinking of the unfortunate boats tied up around the country. I don't envy some of the skippers trying to earn a living from some ports this time of year.
one of the big bonus's for us is the shelter of the black water estuary and surrounding area. just last Sunday we managed to sneak a day out with 18 thornbacks and a few other bits and bobs. in absolute comfort despite the strong winds. Saturday was good with 11 rays and 30 codling. we kept one male ray and 26 of the codling. 2 of the codling were the tiny things and another two legal but not worth keeping. we have had several days like that this season which usually sends everybody home with a smile.
over the next month or so we should see the spring run of codling before they leave and as the water warms further the rays will grow in numbers. if were lucky we might get a last chance offshore in search of a better cod if not im sure we'll be happy with the inshore codling rattling the rod tips.

im sorry its been a while since my last report on CBUK but I do update pictures and availability on here. I will try to do a monthly report on here if I get time. if not you can always find an honest report from each trip on my website www.essexseafishing.co.uk

• 24/02/2014 Fishing Report by Dave Rushworth on Size Matters (Craobh Haven, Argyll & Bute)

24 Feb 2014 by Dave Rushworth

Report on-board Size Matters

I'd booked onto a Mersey charter trip aboard the 'Brigand' with Althebass, Brian & Frank, it was a 6am lock out which meant a 4am alarm call :sleepy: and despite getting everything ready the night before, in my sleep deprived befuddled state, I somehow managed to run late and didn't set off till 5am which meant a mad dash down the motorway at breakneck speed  I just managed to get to the marina for 6 (ish) with the skipper waiting for me at the gate  everyone was already on the boat waiting, which meant all the best spots had gone and I was tucked under the canopy by the wheelhouse on the left side of the boat, which meant I would be casting cack-handed! serves me right for being late! :huan kerr:

We were soon out of the marina and steamed out onto the river in the gloom and headed up to our first mark just past the clock tower. After a short steam down river we anchored up in the fierce running tide and launched out our baits expectantly

Image

I had an assortment of baits, blow lug, frozen black, crab, mussel and squid. The skipper Kev told us squid had been doing the business over the last few trips.....
Image

Image

Frank was first in with a nice keeper....this got him all smug & excited cos we had the usual £1 for the biggest and he was in the lead
Image

The tide run started to ease, the wind dropped and the sun came out.....it was looking like it was gonna be a decent day.....
Image

Even Al was smiling....only at my attempt to get him to use one of my armamesh concoctions, he said it looked like one of my turds
Image

I was targeting the small stuff  even with my 5/0's and big baits...
Image

Brian had predicted that the fish would come on the feed better 3hrs or so before low water and he was bang on the money for himself.....
Image
Al got into a good fish but bumped it off on the way up, his powerful muscular arms glinting in the weak winter sun, his sparrow legs buckling underneath him as he slumped to the floor and threw his (muscular) arms up like he'd been shot in 'Platoon'....."Noooooooooooooooooo..........." (it was later estimated by Al that the fish was 'at least' 6lb which rose by a lb ever time someone mentioned it, so at the end of the day Al had lost a 12lb fish...allegedly!)

We carried on fishing right down to low water with just the odd fish coming out...
Image

Image

Tuskar steaming past
Image

The skipper told us at dead low we would be heading upriver to Bromborough where we could wait for the tide to turn and have our lunch of Curry & Rice...now we're talking! :yeah2: spot on it was too, just on the right side of spicy and a good portion as well

The lull in activity gave Frank the chance to show off and have a quick brag
Image

Though all the excitement was all a bit too much for him :sleepy:
Image

but at least he made a new friend......
Image

Who's the guilty party?
Image

The tide took an age to get going, and the wind freshened which kept the boat facing the wrong way for longer than expected, Otterspool in the distance......
Image

Image

Image

As the tide got going, a surprise plaice came aboard.....
Image

The odd good codling came aboard too so I hedged my bets and put on the last of my crab and mussel...
Image

Which paid off handsomely...
Image

4lb 4oz....biggest of the day
Image

A couple of thornies came out too with the biggest going 6lb
Image

Image

I got another keeper of around 2½lb at the death on straight squid, all the bait I'd got left!
Image

It was a thoroughly enjoyable day out, the craic and banter was top notch even though (or probably because) the fishing was hard going and a bit slow at times. Around 40 codling came aboard with only a dozen or so keepers but we all caught and dropped a fair few fish too.
I have to say though the skipper Kev McKie was superb, he never stopped working and did everything in his powers to put us on the fish. I was particularly impressed with the way he coached the less experienced anglers on the boat, nothing was too much trouble for him. He was constantly offering advice, sorting out tangles, preparing bait and even casting in when asked. He kept us topped up with hot brews throughout the day and the curry was superb. You could tell he is an angler himself, he knows his stuff and is as keen as mustard, I'll certainly use him again and I'd recommend him to anyone, top skipper...... - See more at: http://www.anglingaddicts.co.uk/forum/brigand-charters-mersey-24th-feb-t11198.html#sthash.LAYYAhhx.dpuf
