    Report on-board Silver Spray II

First Cherbourg trip of the year completed. Nice weather and a top group of lads certainly makes the multi day trips easier even before you start fishing. It was nice to see all the lads getting stuck into some good fish over the 3 days with bass ling cod and pollock all making an appearance in varying quantities. The only problem came with the mackerel....we had a grand total of 3 over the trip which was not helpful when it came to fishing over slack water. Still its another 3 weeks until my next one so i expect they will have arrived in more numbers by then.

    Report on-board 3 Fishes

I'm sure that the chat about cold water conditions and a late season has caught up with you wherever you are.. I believed it all too but the interesting thing is we have just started finding bass which matches last year almost to the day (25th May first fish last year). Its lovely to see bass following the lure and with clear water conditions due soon we'll start seeing this more and more. Here's Jack getting hit hard by a fish which he then lost!

  • 20/05/2013 Fishing Report by Dave Builth on Upholder (Amble, Northumberland)

20 May 2013 by Dave Builth

    Report on-board Upholder

    April/May Report
The season got off to a slow start with March being a complete right off, when you look back at last year’s report for late March, we had a mini heat wave with temperatures in the twenties. Everything this year is a month behind, with the sea temperature being around 5 to 7 degrees C and the water being very discoloured with green algae, very little was caught until late April.
For the record, the first Codling was caught by Doug Hutchinson from the Currock SAC on the 20th of April. A clean fish about 3lb, caught on pink Hokki’s and cooked prawns (see Photo ).
It was a real struggle to find clean water and the algae was reported to be right along the Northeast Coast and to be fair to the Anglers, with no hope of catching anything, I cancelled several trips until conditions improved.
It was May the 10th until the first signs of any fish, when a group of Anglers from Lancashire had 20 Codlings to keep, between 2lb to 4lb.
The Currock SAC had 36 codlings to keep on the 11th of May, with many small fish returned.
May 16th was the first sign of any quantity of Codlings, with the best being caught by Tom Hollaway at 6 ¾ lb and Chris Wilkinson had a codling of 6 ½ lb.(see photos). Peter Mc Donald caught the first Pollock of 2013, which weighed 5 lb.
With the weather back to normal with strong Northerly winds 20 mph plus, the sea
was stirred up and the water was yet again coloured, with Sunday’s trip looking doubtful.

    Sunday May 19th,
Despite the poor weather from the two previous days, the sea calmed down and a club from Edinburgh managed to catch 40 plus codling with many size codlings returned. The Codlings were caught on fresh dug lug worm and fresh mussel. As the day went on the condition of the water changed with the tide and most of the fish were caught when the water cleared.

    Monday 20th,
The best fish of the year so far was caught by Joe Haggerty, a fine 8lb codling,
caught on fresh dug lug worm (see photo) he also had a nice 6lb Pollock and lost a fine fish mid water. Total catch for the 6 anglers was 40 plus with many size fish returned. The Codling are a better stamp of fish between 3lb to 4 ½ lb so thing are beginning to look up.

  • 19/05/2013 Fishing Report by Rich Ward on Shy-Torque III (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

19 May 2013 by Rich Ward

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

Last Saturday saw the fleet at Whitby tied up yet again for bad weather, however we did manage to sail on a flat calmer on the Sunday.

Ian Nolleth from Glossopdale SAC and his team joined the boat on their annual trip to the North East on Sunday.

We started out working the ground on the 9 mile and picked steadily for the first 2 or 3 hours. The water appearing to be completely rid of the algea at last. How wrong could I be!! At 12.30 p.m the water started to green up yet again and completely put the mockers on the job. Sadly we could only manage another half dozen fish after lunch but the lads were happy enough with their mornings efforts. After a count up of 38 cod, 2 ling and a handful of pouting we decided to make for home at 3.30. Ben winning the personal count with 8 cod, 3 whiting and a couple of pouting. A very enjoyable day. Cheers lads.

Darryl winning the sweep on the boat with a cod of 7lb 4oz.

    Darryl is pictured.

  • 19/05/2013 Fishing Report by Peter Everett on Amino (Shotley, Suffolk)

19 May 2013 by Peter Everett

    Report on-board Amino

After a successful first ever trip on Amino two weeks ago, Arthur and crew came out for their 2nd trip and got amongst some decent fish again and a fair number of species as per yesterdays trip.

Thornback were the main species with fish to over 10lb again, plenty of LSD's (too many today!!!!!!!!!!!!), we also had 4 more Spurdogs although they were only small fish, several Smoothounds and a small Bass. We lost a decent hound at the boat (estimated 15lb+) after it had rolled on the line as well as a couple of skate that tested the kit to the max in the stronger part of the tide but with the sun blistering down and a flat calm sea, it didn't dampen the spirits too much....

I am nearly booked up for weekend trips til the end of June with the odd Sat / Sun still left so if you fancy a trip, give me a call.

  • 18/05/2013 Fishing Report by Peter Everett on Amino (Shotley, Suffolk)

18 May 2013 by Peter Everett

    Report on-board Amino

After having postponed Damien Baldwins group for several months now due to bad weather, we managed to get out..much to their relief..and I think the wait was worthwhile ;-)

Several LSD's graced the boat before the first Thornback arrived, then on his first ever fishing trip, newbie Paul Lowe landed his and Amino's first ever double figure Spurdog at 14lb 8oz. After weighing and photos the fish was returned...cracking start....

Then the Newbie struck again, this time with a 12lb Thornback..much to the disgust of the rest of the crew..and so began the banter...

Then Damien who has been wanting to catch a Smoothound for years(and hasnt stopped banging on about it) had one on and went to lift it from the water...you guessed it...plop..off the hooks at the boat...more banter ensued...

Matt Crowe had a couple of Smoothound to add to Damiens woes, best going tad under 8lb...

Next up was Colin Allaton, never had a Thornback before and pulled one in at a tad under 8lb...

Newbie struck again with a couple more Thornback before Damien hooked up with something that started taking line...after playing for about 5 minutes, a big silver fish came from the depths, (Damien got all excited thinking double figure Smoothie) and up popped this cracking Spur of 15lb 8oz(pictured)...I had to triple weigh her cos she looked and felt much bigger than the earlier fish....again she was returned after photos and swam off strongly..

A few more Thornbacks were had and some more smaller Spurs and Smoothounds, a small Bass also for Colin as well as more LSD's and then...... Matts peeler bait was picked up by something that never allowed him to catch up the slack on the uptider, bent the rod double, peeled 40lb braid off the clutch before breaking on the swivel....we will never know, but it would have been something special....

Total for the day was 9 Thornback, 6 Spurdog, 1 Bass, 4 Hounds and loads of LSD's. Cracking day, cracking banter, cracking fish :-))

    Report on-board Cleveland Princess

This report covers the 18/19 of May fished off the whisler bank on Sat 18th bit slow to begin with small tides this weekend but this didont stop Martins rod bending in double with what we think was a very big Ray it did not make the surface, a few Spottys and Hounds showed then Rik had a nice 5lb Bass on Martins rod as he was getting his other rod in that went down well a few more Bass came into the boat all around the 2/3lb mark for Athus and his mate Domy from London as the tide eased all caught on squid and blacks, one of the down tiders that Rik was using started to jump about this we thought was some thing big and it was a female Spurdog in pup in excess of 20lb we did not manage to get it in the boat it spatt the hook as we tried what a fish, there is a ban on landing these fish if you didont know, all so if any one knows who lifted my 2 lobster pots from the back of Jackamans can you give me a call on 07771926590,brian.fished the Newcome on Sun 19th hoping for some Rooker but none showed we finished up with 5 Bass all around the 2/3lb mark loads of Spottys/Hounds and a nice 5lb Cod,see you all again soon,bp.
