  • 07/05/2013 Fishing Report by Bob Marshall on Duke IV (Ramsgate, Kent)

7 May 2013 by Bob Marshall

    Report on-board Duke IV

At last the water is slowly warming enough for the crabs to peel and the summer species are starting to show, with good numbers of Skate on the banks and the first Smoothounds being landed.
We made another visit to the wrecks with Andys crew from Kent who saw plenty of quality Cod being landed on the old favourites jellies and shads. No Pollack on this trip though, perhaps another species under pressure from commercial overfishing.
A stop on the banks on the way home saw a reasonable catch of Mackerel to feathers and hokkies, again these fish are not in the numbers we used to catch nor are they as large, hopefully the shoals will build with the jumbo Mackerel being the most superb eating fish around.
The Bass are keeping a low profile so far but they should arrive anytime now with plenty of sandeels on the banks, the crabs peeling and the last of the Whiting still here, there's a feast of food waiting for them. Still some weekend dates available to book Duke IV so give me a call and come along for a great fishing experience.

7 May 2013 by Gary Flint

    Report on-board Discovery

    07,05,13 Taskers angling shop Liverpool.
We met at Liverpool marina at 10 am The Sun was high in the sky with no clouds for a change( We could not beleive our luck the forecast was for a big low presure system coming up from the south the following day) So we set off,we agreed to try a mark that produces big Bull huss some 28miles from the marina.
whilst we where travelling i explained that the summer species have not arrived yet, we put this down to the water temperature being down for this time of the year due to the terrible weather we had around easter, we arrived on site to start fishing before everybody had a line in whiting where being pulled over the side, then the occasional Dog fish then the odd Dab and then finally the first Bullhuss of 2013 for Discovery was lifted over the side and welcomed for a change the fish flowed in all day with Neil taking 3 huss to about 9lbs but also losing a bigger one at the back of the boat,Peter who fished consistantly all day eventually was un catchable and won the overall comp. Well done lads wait till the summer species come in.

    2.05.13 Individuals trip.
We left the marina at 6am to be greeted with sun and no wind, so we set off to a mark some 25 miles away,
tea, coffee, and breakfast was hastly finished as we arrived to our first mark,(rough ground) we had agreed that we would keep a record of everybodies catch, and give points for certain species,we caught mostly whiting at this mark and moved on to another mark ,where we had whiting.pouting, poorcod, ling, dabs, ballan wrasse, cod, dogfish, and the first person on Discovery to catch a scollop(Vicky from the IOM) We did accuse her of bringing it over with her,Paul D had a nice ling of 5lbs 2oz and Mark D had a nice Wrasse2lbs.
Still no mackerel, overall a good day with paul d taking the prize, things will get better when the mackerel make a show. Gary Skipper.

  • 06/05/2013 Fishing Report by Rich Ward on Shy-Torque III (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

6 May 2013 by Rich Ward

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

    06.06.13.

A mixed group today from as far afield as Ramsbottom to Bedale and thank goodness for that strip of ground 27 miles from shore!!

Yes, it was yet another run back out to that ground locally known as the "Wall"

The VHF on channel 10 was alive with talk of "doom and gloom" from the lads working inshore.

My idea is that if you have the boat and the pace to get to the better grounds / wrecks well offshore then use it! Ok it's a steam to get there, but when you are often rewarded with a good days sport then it has to be done. It breaks my heart when I get the fuel bill at the end of the month but if it means that my lads are in with a good chance of fish then we have to do it!!

Dermot Faye from Bedale was the top lad on the boat with a good bag of fish. His second drop of the day netted him a treble. Nothing big though unfortunately.

Again, another fantastic day both weather wise and company wise.

    Cheers lads!

    Dermot is pictured.

5 May 2013 by Rich Ward

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

    05.05.13.

Gary Hurling and his lads from Boston Lincs had their first trip of the year today. Once they had boarded I informed them what the inshore fishing had been like for some of the charter fleet here over the last few days.

I suggested that we returned to the "Wall" where we had been getting the best results of any of the boats on the last few trips

Gary said it was a no brainer and we went straight there. With the weather being on our side again ( a beautiful flat calmer ) surely we were destined for top results today!!

A steady picking of fish from the start with the size mark being slightly better than on the last visit out there.

The lads were well chuffed with their catch. The hard work really paying off with a good selection of fish ranging from a Tub Gurnard just short of 2lb ( of which I've never seen one as big for years ) to Cod to 12lbs.

Fantastic weather for the lads making for another good days sport on the Shy-Torque III

  • 26/04/2013 Fishing Report by Rich Ward on Shy-Torque III (Whitby, North Yorkshire)

26 Apr 2013 by Rich Ward

    Report on-board Shy-Torque III

    26.04 13.

Rob Smith and his team joined us board the boat on the 26th April.

With the fishing here at Whitby being somewhat "patchy" shall we say on the inner marks, we have been working offshore to try and find the fish.

We cruised out to a couple of wrecks on the 20 mile stream for very little and decided that we would go to the ground that can usually save the day. That being the "Wall"

Judging by what the other lads were catching inside us this had definately proved to be a good move indeed.

By close of play the lads had gathered a few fish each for the table. 40 or so fish for the boat. Sadly no monsters but a nice few Codling, Pollack and Coalie to the 5lb mark.

Great weather and a great team of lads making the day very enjoyable for all.

Pictured is Ray from South Shields.

  • 04/2013 Fishing Report by Gethyn Owen on My Way 2 (Holyhead, Isle of Anglesey)

    Apr 2013 by Gethyn Owen

    Report on-board My Way 2

Early season 2013 and the weather has played a major part in the fishing all over the UK. From mid-March all the way through April, the water temperatures have remained unseasonably low in comparison to previous years. Together with a relentless barrage of strong winds, it really has been hard to get out and put any sort of run together.

Early April and we managed to sneak out to the deeps on one day, as a small example, either side of this particular we cancelled because of strong winds. With a good group of regulars, we sailed around the coast looking for herring or pollack to supplement our frozen baits for our spurdog and huss hunt. Sadly none of them wanted to help us out. Barring 2 good spurdogs out in the deeps, the day would have been a real hard one.

An extract from our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/GOAngling) this days fishing reads as follows:-

Glorious sunshine and flat calm seas today, nice end to the Easter period … sadly the fish failed to read my email! A painfully slow start to the day, drifting around the coast to Trearddur Bay saw no fish for the first 90 mins. A move to anchor, then a further move finally saw a few doggies, with the odd codling and whiting break the surface of the water.

Additionally we had a fair number of bull huss, sadly they were the smallest huss I had ever seen, the largest was smaller than a standard dogfish! The deep was sadly hard work also.

Dave managed to hook a beauty of a spurdog towards the end of our time, following on from Ian Thomo who hooked into the only other spur of the session, everyone else catching just dogs. Fortunately for Ian, it was his first spur and a very a decent one at 14lb 6oz

    ***

The fishing through early April was hard work; even the dogfish were showing signs of hibernation. Normally April is a month that really gets going, all manner of species moving in and some fantastic sport with spurdogs, huss and small pack tope arriving in the Holyhead Deep. Towards the 3rd week of April things started to pick up on the fish front, with quantity and more species moving in.

This was when we managed another couple days afloat, having cancelled numerous trips in between leaving both me and the anglers extremely frustrated. With a planned trip off to the Deeps restricted again by a strong NW breeze one mid-April day, our efforts centred on various marks within Holyhead Bay. The usual suspects of dogs, whiting, dabs, small huss, codling plus more showing up to grace our baits and help out some of the crew with their clubs on going 2013 species hunt.

The following day the wind swung around to the south, too strong again to allow us to get to the deeper marks offshore but it allowed us to drift a few inshore marks around the Breakwater and Rocky coast in search of early season pollack that move in to Holyhead Bay.

Thankfully the pollack had arrived, nothing too big, the best specimen probably going 4lb, but with a fair number in the 2 to 4lb bracket, a few buckets were filled with some nice chunky fillets going home with the anglers.

Light tackle and 25 to 35 foot of water, makes for some great fun with these hard fighting fish. Sadly, the over all wind patterns remain unsettled for us at the moment and whilst colleagues on the south coast have basked in some fantastic calm seas, and hot days, we have had to dodge winds for the odd day or two afloat.

On the plus side, things though are quickly improving, the waters are warming up, the crabs are starting to peel and fish are moving into the bay with each passing day.

We have limited spaces available for the remainder of May and into June, if you are interested in a particular date or species to fish for please email or call to discuss, thanks.
